Baby’s In Black – Duo Session

Oh Dear, it’s Time for a new Duo Session!

We have set up a corner in our studio dedicated to Duo Session videos for the MLT Club (and occasionally YouTube). We have been releasing similar videos exclusively for the Club over the last year, but have now managed to streamline our workflow to record and film them much easier. The contributions from the Club & donations have made this much, much easier, so THANK YOU! ♥

To kick things off we chose one of the most fan requested cover suggestions we got … “Baby’s In Black”.

The melody is gorgeous, the harmonies are perfect as only The Beatles could write them, the chords flow beautifully and the lyrics are …. well, what are they? Sweet? Disturbing? Absolutely inappropriate? Cheeky? Romantic? Cruel? What do you think, we’d love to know!

We love the song, and it was great re-learning it again last week. We played it many years ago at one of our acoustic Cavern Club shows but never made a recording of it, so we had to rectify that now and selected it as the first tune to test our new setup. 🙂

We might put this one up on our official YouTube channel in a few weeks but as always, please keep it under wraps until then!

We hope you are all doing great and wish you a wonderful weekend,
Mona & Lisa

  1. Super performance. I loved every second of it.
    Here is my take on the lyrics of the song. The girl’s boyfriend has died – and she still mourns his loss many months after the loss of him. She still wears black because that is how she still feels. This other boy has feelings for her and wants to begin dating her… but she still only thinks of him (the one who has passed away). So the new guy can only feel blue – having no way to reach her as she still mourns her lost guy. This new guy just doesn’t know what he can do… and he wonders… “Oh how long will it take – till she sees the mistake she has made” (of not being able to move on – after his death). And he begs for God to please “tell me, oh what can I do?”.

    I have always loved this song – especially John & Paul’s amazing harmony singing (with the highlight being Paul’s soaring part where he sings the high harmony on (Oh how long will it take… till she sees the mistake she has made”. Also love George’s guitar throughout the song. So I love the music, the singing and the lyrics.

  2. Needless to say, perfectly executed 🙂
    The lyrics and the tone remind me of Ringo’s later song Don’t Pass Me By on the White Album. As such, I think it’s tongue-in-cheek, while also giving insight into the way narcissists and stalkers see someone they’re infatuated with. That is, the feelings of the object of affection have little to do with the way the narrator sees their ‘relationship’

  3. Beautiful version of this classic song. It has been said already but I love your harmonies and the vibes you both exude when performing, love it 🙂

  4. I love The Beatles For Sale!. And this Baby is in black in the beautiful voices of Mona and Lisa is the best cover I’ve ever heard. Mona and Lisa are the best!

  5. Great cover as always!! The guitar part has more than a few country riffs to it. Also, really like Mona’s new hair style.

  6. I have to wonder what it says about me that this song of such desperation puts such a smile on my face. It’s an incredibly engaging tune with lyrics of sorrow, yet leaves room for the possibility that all will work out eventually. Makes me think that perhaps a lot of things might not be as bad as they seem. Thank you Mona & Lisa!

  7. WOW! So amazing… you continue to blow me away with your unbelievable talent!!! Are you growing out your hair Mona? Looks simply beautiful!

  8. Dear Mona, dear Lisa. Again a wonderful Beatles cover. Especially ’cause it’s from the album ” Beatles for sale ” what is together with ” Rubber Soul ” the best, Beatles ever made. Btw 3 days ago I got my Christmas CD from you. I play it up and down.

  9. I’m imagining John and Paul, side by side, as you two, composing this song (if they did it together). At the end they look to each other, as you two, as saying: Good job! I would say Great Job!

  10. I love what you do. My interest in the Beatles had faded but has returned now as I heard you girls. Your musicality, your beauty is breathtaking. “Babys in black” was just one of many Beatles songs I liked. Thank you Mona and Lisa for making their and others’ music so good.

  11. Wonderful job ladies! Harmonic perfection and incredible playing – As John said before the Quarrymen had a drummer- the rhythm is in the guitars. Love the fab hairdos – every duo session has been incredible- thanks Team MLT! Mona and Lisa are super awesome!

  13. LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! There is simply no chance that I won’t be singing this to myself for the next several days. (btw, also love your new looks!)

  14. I really like the Duo Sessions, You put your Heart and Soul into every performance! Another song Well Done Ladies! Baby’s In Black, A Beautiful little Waltz

  15. When are you going to get REALLY ambitious and cover the whole of the LOVE album, multiple multiples of overdubs, oodles of overdubs, for every single note in there? 🙂 😛 :-O

  16. Oh lovely! This one sounds a little country. Like the clever tambourine strapped to the boots. Harmonies and guitar playing are just perfection! Awesome performance, want to keep replaying it. Thank you once again Mona and Lisa for this slice of music heaven.

  17. Awesome. Thank you for proving me right about the Duo Sessions, No one can touch you! You could challenge anyone, ANYONE in the world to go up against you like this and you’d leave them in the dust. Even the Everly Brothers at their peak. Thank you for sharing this with us, and for promising more!
    Love it! ???‍♀️?‍???

  18. Oh dear, what can it be? Another Beatles favourite and one of my favourites from the ‘Beatles For Sale’ album too. Just delightful ladies. And Mona, “With your long blonde hair and your eyes so true, the only thing I ever got from you …….!” How about another Bowie?

  19. Whoa… A Fab Friday Musical Treat, how neat, Groovy Beat, Harmonies Sweet…. Makes me smile and not feel blue
    The new Setup for Duo Sessions Corner awesome too, Thankyou and Kudos on this sincerely from me to you…
    PS… Digging the Long Hair Growing Out Looks… Who’s going to win that contest?!… Lol… Luv the new hairdos… Rock n Groovy Rolling… ☮️

  20. Another beautiful thing added to the collection of beautiful things. Well done Team MLT. I also have to add a shout out for the 4K video. I know this adds it’s own overhead to the process, but it really is stunning to watch.

  21. I have always loved this song as well as your harmonies on this cover. Thanks MLT, great video of you two playing and singing. For me this is about a man who is pursuing a woman, but the woman doesn’t return the interest because she is still in mourning for her previous lover, and hence she always dresses in black. The depressing subject matter is hidden by the upbeat music. >>

  22. I’ve always felt this song was a tribute to Stu Sutcliffe and Astrid and how the early and sudden death of Stu left a hole in John’s life filled with grief that John could only express through music. The lyrics give the impression that the song writer is lamenting that the girl didn’t chose him I figure is a diversion to misguide the listener.

  23. Great cover of one of my favorite Beatles songs. The harmonies are very moving. Thumbs up for Mona’s hair! Stay Groovy!

  24. You all Killed it! I think the song is a sad bitter sweet tribute to someone that has lost somebody close to them. It also tells (to me) of the pain one experiences when this traumatic experience happens in their life.
    We’ve all been there, and we can all relate to how she feels.
    There is really nothing anyone can do except be there and offer comfort or anything else that’s needed.
    Mona you are rocking in that beautiful hair? I know you talked about possibly cutting it? I hope you don’t WOW!?
    Lisa your red is a Sheen of fire and brimstone. ??
    I hope you do release it to YOU TUBE. I think it will match Here There And Eveywhere in explosive views.
    Thanks Ladies for the Exquisite Cover?❤

  25. I hear it as a sad song. She can’t get the former boy out of her mind and it seems to make the new boy crazy. Love the new hair style Mona! Keep that hair out of your right eye though! Lisa went with the straight hair look for this video, Love it!

  26. Oh Dear, what can I say?
    Lisa, your riffs blew me away!
    Mona, I love how you play;
    And, I Love your hair
    It’s as long as I’ve seen;
    and, wow, I love how
    Both of you sing…
    A great job by the two
    of you girls;
    Better than the original!
    Oh Dear what can I say?
    The MonaLisa-Twins
    blow me away!
    Yes, you blow me away!
    (I really, really love this cover! Awesome job!)
