BBC Radio 2 – Johnnie Walker’s Sounds of the 70s – Radio Interview

Sounds of the Seventies BBC Radio 2 Johnnie Walker

“They are incredible. I’ll do all I can to spread the word about the MonaLisa Twins.”

These were the words of Johnnie Walker after he had first come across our music back in 2014. Johnnie is one of Britiain’s most beloved and longest standing DJs with a career that began during the wild off-shore broadcasting days in the 60’s on Radio Caroline and lead him to the the BBC, America and back to the BBC.

He has had his own shows on BBC Radio 2 for many years now and invited us to be guests on his segment “Johnnie Walker’s Sounds of the 70s” which he hosts on Sunday afternoons.

We had only been in the UK for about 2 months at that point and things were moving incredibly fast. “We’re going to London to be on BBC Radio 2? Sure, when are we leaving?”

And off we went to London to pre-record an interview at the Wisebuddah Studios in the City Center which would be aired later.

Johnnie Walker was the first one to ever give us national radio exposure. While due to the format of his show he wasn’t allowed to play any of our own music (they only play 70s tracks), as you can hear in the show, we were asked to pick our favourite 70’s songs and explain our reasoning for choosing those particular tracks. We hope you like our selection. Which ones would you have picked?Stay groovy,Mona & Lisa

  1. Only just picked up on this recording. A fan of Johnie Walker as one of the few Radio 2 DJs who knows his music. What a pity he couldnt play MLT as part of the interview.

  2. I haven’t heard this radio show before…too bad your versions of these two songs couldn’t have been played so that listeners could have become familiar with you…but I understand that wasn’t the format of the show….I’m still waiting for the day when MonaLisa Twins originals are heard in rotation on major radio stations..❤️🧡

  3. What memories that show brings back for me. When I was stationed in England in 72 and 73 I listened to Sounds of the 70’s religiously and that’s where I got my biggest exposure to British music. Back then it was hosted by different DJ’s depending on the day of the week. Bob Harris (formerly of The Old Grey Whistle Test) was on Monday’s I think, Anne Nightingale and Alan Black did Tuesday and Thursday, John Peel was Wednesday and Pete Drummond on Friday. But without being stationed in England and listening to Sounds of the 70’s I would have missed out on a lot of great music that lives in my iPod today.
