The Wide, Wide Land
The most beautiful and touching song I’ve ever heardDementia can cause memories to fade
And dignity to be lost
But the love and bond can only grow stronger
It makes the heart grow fonderJacki Hopper replied 6 years, 7 months ago 5 Members · 11 Replies -

Hi Jung;
The Wide, Wide Land will always have a special place in my heart. My mother passed away last year, basically of Alzheimer’s, though she had a couple of strokes before passing……but that’s the way Alzheimer’s works. So, when I hear this song lately, I think of her. She had a good long life (88) and was the rock of our family. I better stop here with memories of her. Mike.

Similar story with my mother. Died at 92 from dementia. This song and video presented me with those same thoughts. Great song with most folks relating to it on very personal levels…demonstrates great songwriting skills! Roger

Sorry to hear about your Mom Roger. Condolences.
I agree. For MLT to be able to move people with this song like they do is a testament to the great musical artists they are, and great people too.

Hi Roger… I’m sorry as well and I too, know what you had gone through, it was with my late Dad…. Had spent last 8 yrs of his life in a nursing home and as with others on here and globally whom have heard this song, the connecting effect it has is just incredible and powerful.

Hi Mike, thanks for sharing that about your mom. I know the pain of losing someone to this horrible disease all too well. I lost my mom to it 3 years ago. She had a series of silent strokes that caused her to develop vascular dementia. A long 13 years battle, and the last 7 years was the toughest. My deepest condolences to you.
It was May 2016 my mom passed away, and all my family are together this weekend to remember her, and so this song has an especially relevant meaning again to me this weekend.
I thought I’d share this which I heard somewhere and find comforting:
“To the world our mom was just another person,
But to us, she was the world.”-
Thanks Jung;
Still a little fresh. The oddest thing is that she passed away on my Dad’s birthday (he passed away in 2004) and it also happened to be their wedding anniversary. I stopped believing in coincidences a while back.

Well this song has meaning for me too… With my Dad who died on my Bday in 2011 in hospital but spent last 8 yrs of life in nursing home…. He suffered a major stroke a few months after Mom’s death on 1995. He had his own health issues that complicated matters for him… Type 2 diabetic… Was a smoker at one time then quit then sneaking around smoking again years later on trying to hide the fact but we knew it…. Had double-triple bypass heat surgery and had seizures/ministrokes after major stroke over the years until his death. Mom lived her last 10 years in hell in a longterm care hospital after her major stroke following surgery to unblock arteries left her useless… Almost comalike but asomewhat functional in some aspects though quite limited…. She could say swear words and Yes and No… Otherwise her speech all muddled up… Couldn’t do anything for herself… That part of brain severely damaged so no physio could be done for her to recover and she knew who we were by voice but not sure if she could see or was blind… She could however uncanningly and clearly hum along to a song on the radio/TV perfectly in tune/pitch or during their Xmas parties… The piano player or singer started singing Xmas songs then Mom would chime in with humming along… Ahhh… Yes… This song certainly means so much for many and am glad MLT created and recorded it for all… It touches hearts…

Jacki, you’ve been through some very tough times dealing with your parents illness. All I can say is big hugs to you from the bottom of my heart. I know hard times can temper people and bring out the best in them, and from all your creativity and spirit I’ve seen from you here at the MLT Club and on Facebook, you are one of the most wonderful and caring people I’ve come across.
Yes, as you say this song touches hearts indeed, and I’m always so thankful to the MLT for the beauty they bring into this world. If one of the virtues of music and art is to make some of the harshness of life bearable, MLT do that for us in spades through their beautiful music every day.

I can identify very closely with this wonderful song. My wife is in a nursing home suffering from lymphodemia and has the beginning of dementia and she is only 65 years old, its tough to handle at times but getting through it as best I can.

Paul, sorry to hear about your wife’s condition. I hope things get better or stabilize. Know you are not alone in this, and it’s the love you share with her that will give you strength.

Hi Paul… I too, am sorry and saddened by your wife’s ill health but I do take comfort in knowing how this MLT song has personally touched us all in a similar way or somewhat manner and that brings a peacefulness about it all and comfort in knowing that one is not alone and we can all share and offer support and how WWL has that power too…
