Wildflower is a great song. Another example of a song I’ve known forever, and had no idea what it’s name was. Lol. I always liked that song though. There’s a definite part of me that loves songs like that. Great slow dance song.

Oh Girl! is a classic. I realized eventually, that the radio I heard in the ’60s was white radio, and vintage R&B/soul wasn’t on it. I found it in the ’70s though, and bought a bunch of vinyl. One of my favourite genres. In my defense, I grew up with Motown, so that helped camouflage the situation somewhat, since it kind of crossed over.

Alison Krause I’m not familiar with. I’ve heard of her, and really like the song, but never heard the song before. If country music was a big block of Swiss cheese, my knowledge of it would be mostly the holes. I definitely appreciate having the gems pointed out to me though.

    One last one from me.

I had a theory, around 1980, that there was no such thing as a woman who didn’t love this song.

    Still haven’t found one.

Not all love songs have a happy ending.

I’ve never sung this song to a woman. Thought about it though.

He wrote this in high school.

Happy Valentines Day to you too Jacki, and everyone else, from me too!

Sorry I didn’t get all of you a dozen roses — unless you did just get some delivered to you without a card, in which case, they’re from me.

Hope you all have a good one! 😍

I’ve subscribed to Sonic State’s free newsletter for many years. They sent me to classicfm.com for this piece about the 13 strangest instruments. A curious list, including, it seems to have more than 13 instruments. But what caught my eye was the badgermin, #5, which of course, is a cross between a badger and a theremin. What else would it be?

#4, the Octobass is interesting too, since it was created by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, the famous Parisian luthier. The only reason I know of him is because one of my favorite violinists, Hilary Hahn, has 2 of his violins, one modeled after Stradivari and another a Guarneri.

These guys seem to be enthused with large instruments. But anyone would love an organ that works by setting it on fire. Reminds me of the old Cheech and Chong skit about a table candle. You put wax on a table. Then you set it on fire.

#13 is the Singing Ringing Tree, which is conveniently located just north of Liverpool in Lancashire.

A lot of these remind me of when I had to roadie a Rhodes (no pun intended) around, way long ago. Big, and mostly, not good for moving around like the Great Stalacpipe Organ or the Sea Organ, neither one of which are going anywhere.

You can’t scare me with Van Halen Jürgen. I grew up on hard rock. I like Van Halen. Eddie could play guitar. I have wilder stuff than that.

    Jürgen,

You talked about beautiful songs and/or songs that move you. All of the ones I’ve listed fall in both categories for me.

Bonnie Raitt has written a bunch of great songs in her time. A band I played in long ago, the singer brought in a couple of her songs – older than even this one. That’s when I found out about her.

She didn’t write this song though, it was from a couple country song writers. Maybe Bonnie’s biggest hit. They ran it by some big names and she grabbed it. There’s a writeup on it in wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Can’t_Make_You_Love_Me

    Thanks Thorsten,

You’re right, I never heard of Joscho Stephan. When you mentioned gypsy jazz, I thought of Django Rheinhart, and then I see he covers Django on his YouTube channel.

I really like him, thanks for mentioning him.

Someone on his channel mentioned that he’s not playing too complicated, he gets the right balance in his music.

I remember telling students, put in what needs to be put in, and leave out what needs to be left out. Easier to say than do, but Mona and Lisa are masters at that. That’s a big reason why I can listen to their music every day and never get tired of it. They’re never too busy.

There are a number of vids of this one, the Singing Ringing Tree from Lancashire.

    Jürgen,

Thanks for that video. That’s interesting. The sea organ. Sounded like it was vamping. Makes me wonder what instrument you should bring to jam with it. Pretty much whatever you want, I would guess. Someone needs to improvise on top of that. Wonder what it’s like when a storm kicks up.

I can imagine getting booked for a gig, and they would expect me to carry one of those up a few flights of stairs into the hall. Sorry – old memories, too many trips with a Rhodes.

And now I’m wondering if it’s possible to find more vids for the other instruments as well, to hear what they sound like. I’ll bet it is.

As far as the cheese goes, I’m no affineur. But, I would think too young of a cheese wouldn’t work at all, it’d be too firm. Can’t have sound without vibration. And as you said, too ripe would just be a mess. So, you would want cheeses, that were – á point.

    Of course.

    Thanks Jung,

I remember ~40 years ago reading an
article about Madonna, and the writer was saying – she has talent, you
don’t get to where she is without talent.

That made some sense to me, even though
I never followed Madonna. And I don’t follow Taylor either. I have
tried to listen to Taylor a few times, just to try to understand the
attraction – I’m always trying to learn things, figure things out – but
    I never made much progress.

I’m 100% with you in the comparison of
Little Drummer Boy. It’s night and day, to my ears. And you’re
right, way, way too many people in the world are missing out.

    I had a bad year in 2022. 2023 started
out just as bad – or worse. From Christmas to the end of January I
had to replace the heat in my house and then the electricity went out
twice. No heat or power for almost a month in the dead of winter.

Then in February I joined the Club, and
I’ve been a much happier guy. Thanks to Mona, Lisa, Rudi and
Michaela. I owe them a lot. They are the best.

I always think the Twins have many,
many millions of fans, but some of them just don’t know it yet. I
feel sorry for them. That was me for way too many years.

But their time will come. I’m sure of it.
