Captain Kangaroo is what my Mom used to calm us down. Not sure what episodes you guys were watching. If we wanted to get worked up, we’d watch Soupy Sales. Throw some pies.

I know the Charlie Brown movies. I still like Vince Guaraldi music for Christmas.

I remember Tim’s stuff – I still like Blue Oyster Cult, I was listening to them the other day. That was a band that could rock out, and they were great live. Some people only heard their later stuff where they had a few commercial hits, but their early stuff was great.

David, I’m impressed at your ability to come up with stuff that I don’t know. I remember my youngest sister watching Sesame Street and that kind of educational thing, but she was a lot younger than me, so maybe that’s it.

Jürgen, I never heard of either of yours. But like you said, it’s a different tradition. I’m over half German ancestry and the rest is mostly Irish, and I never heard of those traditions you mentioned. All of my great grandparents were born in Europe, but that was a while ago.

Here’s one for your neighbor Tim:

    Interesting.

  • I’m glad I like Drive My Car, or I might not have found the Twins yet.

It always seemed to me like the only people who claimed to actively dislike any Beatles songs were named John and Paul.

Lennon didn’t like the medley on Abbey Road. Huh? I mean, I understand when it’s your band, you get to be critical. And I like a bit of perfectionism; it can be good to be critical of yourself.

If I had to name one favourite song, it’d be A Day in the Life. It hits me emotionally as well as intellectually. It really is a Lennon-McCartney song – it sounds like they both wrote it. Maybe not wrote it together, but both wrote it. It has so much in it. But long ago I learned not to try too hard to analyze emotion, so I can’t really explain it. Analysis and emotion use different yardsticks. But I do find it interesting that a lot of other people like it, which suggests there may be some analysis that could be done.

And having said that, yes, it is an impossible task to just pick one favourite.

But like John and Paul, I have 2 or 3 I’d put in the lower half of Beatles songs. And of course all the rest of their songs are in the upper half.

  • Happy Thanksgiving to all the Canadians in the Club.

    That’s making me hungry.

I wonder why I never thought about just doing Thanksgiving twice per year before?

Do you put maple syrup on your turkey?

San Sebastian is on my short list of cities to visit some day, but unfortunately I wasn’t there the day this was filmed. There are a lot of great women bassists these days. Here’s one you might like.

I have Aerosmith’s first 3 albums, which includes this one, and that’s it. Didn’t buy any after. Sounds similar to what you were saying Tim.

That’s a great bass line in that song.

I read a story about BOC not long ago — after they released their first album, they were touring to support it, and while they were touring, whenever they had a spare moment, like when driving to the next gig, or in afternoons or whenever, they were writing the music for their next album, so that when the tour ended, they got back home and went straight into the studio to start recording that next album. Sounds like they had the same boss I used to work for.

I saw BOC play once, in the mid ’70s, headlining a show which opened
with Status Quo and then Bob Seger. Their final song had all six
guys gradually switch from playing their regular instruments, while
the song was going on, so that by the time they finished, all 6 were
playing guitar. Lots of fun. Of course, since their shtick was to be mildly satanic (all in good fun of course), lots of their songs could fall in the scary category, if you could stop laughing long enough.

  • Thanks Jacki,

I actually asked Google what’s typical on the menu for a Canadian Thanksgiving, and that’s where I saw maple syrup on turkey. I love maple syrup, but I had never heard of that either.

Sounds like your menu is pretty similar to what I grew up with, except, we never had fudge!

Tim, I always really liked that song. Long ago I saw a blues/soul/gospel band from NYC called the Holmes Brothers, who introduced me to it. They are long gone since one of the brothers and the lead singer passed away long ago. But they used to come out to blues festivals here, and actually once they played at the Detroit Jazz Festival, too, although they never played jazz. And I saw them play in a club in NYC once too. Brings back good memories. Thanks for posting that. And you can still buy good looking high heeled sneakers.

This year she was nominated for a Grammy, playing with an all star band, for Best Instrumental Jazz Album, from a performance with Wayne Shorter and others at the 2017 Detroit International Jazz Festival. I was kind of annoyed since somehow I managed to miss that free performance, in my own backyard. So I still have never seen her live. Guess I need to raise my head, and pay attention better.

Yeah, she is special. Even the Grammy people like her – 5 Grammies.

Thanks for posting that, I never saw that before. Sesame Street was pretty special. You’ve got to love that, Stevie, who joined Motown at age 11, brings the whole band in to show kids. Makes you wonder how many kids had their first look at musical genius at a really young age because of this. How many lives did this change?

That was from April 1973, so I was about to graduate high school, no wonder I missed it.

Ok, so a cursory look around, and I find out Stevie also wrote another little song especially for that appearance, called 1 2 3 Sesame Street. The bass stands out even more in this song.

I think that’s a vocoder he’s using. Sounds like it.
