I’ve told my MLT discovery story before, and it isn’t particularly unique, but maybe I can embellish it a little.

I was watching some Beatles videos on YouTube in March of 2019, and some cover by the MonaLisa Twins (I honestly don’t remember which one) showed up in the sidebar. My decision on whether to click on such a thing is generally based on what the thumbnail looks like, and clearly I approved because in I went, and it turned out to be one of the best Beatles covers I had ever heard.

So I clicked on a couple more, which were also excellent, and that led me to go to their main page, where I found they had covered dozens of Beatles songs (so clearly they were big fans), plus lots of other 60’s groups. I scrolled down and saw they had done both When I’m Sixty-Four and Maxwell’s Silver Hammer (which have long been closeted favorites of mine), so I knew at that point that they covered what they liked, not just what they thought would sell well.

Eventually I summoned up the courage to check out some of their original songs (including June and I Don’t Know Birds That Well), and found to my surprise that they were great composers of “new” 60’s songs, which is something I had been desperately looking for since I first discovered 60’s music.

Their having passed every test and roadblock that I could come up with, I realized I had to make them a permanent part of my life, so I joined the MLT Club, not just to gain access to more stuff but to talk with other people who had fallen under their spell and learn how to, as I phrased it in my introductory post, “manage the euphoria”.

Nearly five years later I’m still here, and Mona and Lisa and Rudi and Michaela continue to put a smile on my face every day. Even without the music, they’d still be the most positive and inspirational family I know.

Great work, Dennis! $2000 is a pretty impressive haul.

By the way, you can get a current total number of YouTube views by clicking on “more about this channel”. That number has just passed 99 million, so yes, a major milestone is coming up soon!

In remembrance of the recently departed Mary Weiss, here’s a super-sad Shangri-Las song. Lyrically it’s sort of a precursor of the Beatles’ She’s Leaving Home, but in my opinion it packs an even greater dramatic punch:

My wife, who is somewhat prone to verbal typos, said recently that she was thinking about getting the “RSVP shot”. I thought (but didn’t dare say), “Don’t you have to receive an invitation for that?”

  • Hey, Bud.

I teach physics at a community college. Fortunately I don’t have to deal with many discipline problems or bratty behavior, because such students are usually filtered out before they make it through the pipeline to physics.

You always remind me of my days playing clarinet in my junior high band class. I loved it, not so much because of my own playing, but because I was surrounded (literally) by people playing the same song. There’s nothing comparable to the experience of having live music coming at you from all directions.

  • Bud, I’m so happy to know that you’re still teaching after retirement. (And the same sentiment regarding your dad, Jung.) As much as I look forward to retiring in a decade or so, I can’t imagine that I won’t stick around to teach part-time, or at least be a tutor. Constantly interacting with young students keeps me from getting old!

I used to have a neighbor from Thailand. She and my wife became good friends, and she would occasionally cook an insanely spicy rice dish for us. I had to double the amount of rice in it in order to survive.

Very curious, Dennis. I also noticed a few months ago that a video of With a Little Help From My Friends suddenly reappeared after apparently having become unlisted several years earlier.

I guess YouTube just keeps adding up the total number of views of everything that is on the site, rather than checking for new views and adding them to the total.

That social blade thing has a tremendous amount of data! I’ll have to spend a couple of hours perusing it.

We need to figure out how we’re going to celebrate 100M views!

    Hey, David.

Yes, it appears that a couple of very early videos have been removed: Ain’t No Sunshine (from the 2007 concert) and the one where they do the table percussion at their school. Together those account for nearly 200,000 views.

I love this song! It was originally the B-side of the Four Seasons’ “Rag Doll” single.

That might include the Hotel California video, which isn’t available in the U.S. I’ve also noticed that two videos have been removed since I started keeping track. I think they were I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (from the 2007 concert) and one of the early TV interviews.

We’ve discussed this before, Jung, but I’ll probably go to my grave wondering why we have an emotional response to music. I know that music and language are processed in the same area of the brain, so perhaps it’s physiologically inevitable that the mind would try to ascribe meaning to notes and chords. But why are specific musical structures and sequences associated with happiness, sadness, building and resolving tension, etc.?

I don’t know that anyone is calling it creative, Roger. It’s clear from the definition that it’s fundamentally a mathematical manipulation. Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I see negative harmony as a tool for appreciating harmonic structure and chord progressions by standing on the other side of the looking glass to gain a new perspective on a song.
