For nearly 7 years now since I first discovered Mona and Lisa, Michaela and Rudi, their beautiful music continues to enrich my life song after song, week after week, month after month, year after year. What an amazing musical journey, we are all so lucky to be a part of.

Journal entry 3 (March 2017):
At the time I was going through some tough times with changes at my work, still grieving for my mom, and just feeling down and blue. Nothing Is In Vain really stood out. In the video, the light bulb scene at the end reminded me that despite the chaos in the universe, there is order and meaning, and nothing is in vain.
Through our creativity and imagination too, we can create order and hope out of the chaos, like beautiful music, art, literature, a beautiful home and life etc… MLTs song inspired me to feel this way. I find myself floating up in the clouds when I hear Nothing Is In Vain, such a beautiful, dreamy, uplifting song….

Member27/01/2024 at 21:35 in reply to: MLT Notebook, can make a difference in your life like their musicDavid Bowie kept a journal. Here is an interesting article about his notebook. Moleskine even featured a special edition journal in David Bowie’s honour.
“But the real treasure is the stash of original pages of his modest spiral notebooks. In them, he composed lyrics and how they might be put to music, performed, and turned into video, all simultaneously. His handwritten script changes not just over the years but from page to page. The writings are often surrounded by surreal drawings: night scenes of empty cities, colored in multiple impressionistic shades with markers. The drawings are beautiful — cinematic descriptions, like a director’s notes for a film.”

How a David Bowie Journal Helped Me Cope With Anxiety and Depression

Oh yeah that little piece by Lisa is always so joyful. Her Uke tickles my brain in the most wonderful way.
Some great piano in those 2 videos. I love that white piano she plays. If I win the lottery ticket one day, I will have a house with a very nice piano in every room.
That second video, playing piano with one hand doing the pedals too, and then playing the xylophone with the other hand takes some incredible skill. She is very good. It’s like Mona singing, playing the guitar, tapping rhythm with her feet, and doing the blues harp, and doing every part superbly. By the end of the Pink Floyd piece, her piano is just captivating, so rich in emotions.
If you want an out of body or out of this world experience, you can if you let yourself get into this Chopin masterpiece. For many decades of my life, I fluffed this piece off as depressing and pointless, a funeral march, and never got my attention past a few bars. Then one day the genius of this piece hit me like a ton of bricks. The first part of this 9 minute piece is sombre and sad, but then at the 2:30 mark, the clouds part and you float to heaven, carried by a most beautiful piano voice, then at 6:30 you are returned back down to the earth to feel the heavy sombre mood of reality again. The 4 minutes of escape between 2:30 to 6:30 evokes tears of beauty and joy for me. The emotional mood change in this piece is amazing. There is such a contrast, a shift from dissonance to consonance back to dissonance again. Music expressing our human experience. It is so moving.

Member24/01/2024 at 03:35 in reply to: MLT Notebook, can make a difference in your life like their musicOh darned, do you know what day it is today? It is (was) National Handwriting day, January 23rd 2024.
It is National Handwriting Day in the US, because it is John Hancock’s birthday. John Hancock was an American Founding Father who’s flourished signature stands out above the rest on the Declaration of Independence. That’s where the term “John Hancock” originated in reference to your signature. “Can I have your John Hancock please”. So a nice signature does make a difference.
So grab your pen and your MLT Notebook and start writing, and if you don’t have an MLT Notebook, sacrilege, order one now! 😉 ….and some MLT pens too….and CDs….MLT Hoodie…..Studio Scribble Art Print…..Calendar….Tote Bag……
His signature has become synonymous with patriotism and defiance in the face of tyranny.

Hi Tim
That was a fun watch of Rick Nielson’s amazing guitar collection. Ended up watching the entire thing. I could get into his mindset of collecting so many guitars he treasures, for the craftsmanship and the memories and stories each one evokes. Collecting nice pens, I feel the same way, each one brings a special memory and unique quality and value. I didn’t know John Lennon was such a big advocate for Cheap Trick helping them get picked up by a record producer. Thanks.

The accuracy with which she plays the nose harp, and the seriousness of the orchestra as they play along is just as funny.

Hi JP
I’ve always associated this to comedies from Get Smart to Gilligan’s Island as well.
Within Chopin’s Piano Sonata No 2, the 3rd movement “Funeral March”, is hidden the really beautiful gem. It’s like human nature I think when something sad happens, we reflect on it and often try to find something positive or some meaning out of it. This beautiful passage hidden within the sad piece is a reflection like that.
One thing to note is that Chopin himself did not name that 3rd movement a funeral march, it was by others who observed the mournful and solemn character of the movement. It’s too bad, because this beautiful piece got labeled as something to do with death, when in fact it can be much more than that, open to each individual’s interpretation as art is meant to be. It’s Chopin’s expression of something sad, and beauty he finds within it.
Yuja Wang’ gives an expressive performance of it too on youtube.

Yeah I think it is a great idea to stay active after retirement in something you are passionate about, or to have something your are passionate about. My dad after he returned from Japan at 77, continued to drive all over the place, even wrote an autobiography in Japanese and published a few dozen copies and shared it amongst his friends and relatives. The focus was on his impressions growing up in Japan as a Korean during and post World War II and beyond. He started to decline after my mom had to go into a care facility, and my dad is currently in a care home, turned 96 in November. He gives me a huge smile when I see him which means a lot.
I have my digital piano in my home office right next to my desk where I work all day. I hope I can retire and realize my dream of being able to play a Beethoven, Mozart, or Bach piece competently while I am still walking the earth.

Hi Jurgen
Thanks for uncovering these great indie groups in Korea. It’s really great to see Rock and Roll alive and well in Korea. Back in 2017 we went to this area called Hongdae near one of the big universities that has become famous for it’s pop culture, indie music and art scene. In the summer evenings it’s a wonderful place to hang out and take in the energetic vibe. I really enjoyed myself there when we visited. Next time I am back in Korea, I will go back there. Anyone visiting Seoul, I highly recommend checking out this area. Some great restaurants around there, interesting shops, and lots of outdoor busking and just overall fun and excitement.

I love spicy food, it’s the only thing that when it hurts, I can’t stop and am drawn back to more. There is a thing call Korean Fire Noodles I’ve tried and it’s so painfully good.

No worries, it’s always great to hear from you and read your posts when you are able to do so. Sorry to hear you were sick, it seems like the bug is getting around a lot these days. I think it’s great you are teaching your music even after your retirement. Music is your passion, and I think it’s great you are continuing to work teaching music as long as you are enjoying it.
My dad after he retired from his engineering job at 65 or so, went back to teaching electronics at a college as a lecturer for a few years, and then did some contract work teaching field technicians electrical engineering stuff at various hydro utility offices in Northern BC, then in his late 60s went to Japan to teach math at a high school where he use to attend as a child. Early in his career he taught as a professor at a University in Korea, and always enjoyed teaching, and returned to teaching in his retirement. He finally returned back home and stopped working at 77.

Nice ones Thomas. I’ve always really liked Seasons In the Sun, and Silence is Golden is a wonderful gem too. Great harmonies indeed!
