Day 12

Last day of editing before our new video for tomorrow goes up here at the Club! We’re preparing another Duo Session, this time a cover of a very old song!

We have worked with a variety of audio software over the years but when it comes to video editing we have pretty much exclusively stuck with the Adobe Suite so far. All of you will know Adobe’s “Photoshop” – their photo editing software – but we use “Adobe Premiere” and sometimes “After Effects” when working on videos.

That reminds us of a lovely story. A while ago, one of Photoshop’s veteran programmers, Russell Williams, contacted Lisa to compliment her on her work with the software after he had watched the “Time Of The Season” video. He even ordered an album as he is a big Beatles & MLT fan. Small world, isn’t it? Once again, the power of music is bringing us all together! 🙂

  1. That is a lovely story, about Russell Williams. It seems you have many of those stories and it doesn’t surprise me at all, given how well you do everything you embark on. It takes a lot of work and dedication just to get the basics of these programs. Then the artistry on top of that is another story altogether. Chapeau, once again.
It seems to me that you’re using Cubase for editing audio? How do you feel about it? I’m moving into Studio One and struggling a bit with it, though it’s a good improvement from my old stuff.

  2. I’m always fascinated by the way you describe in detail, the BTS stuff on how you create videos, etc… The way you describe, because I’m a visual person/learner, I’m able to somewhat grasp the details in what you explain and how it all correlates… Quite interesting/educational/fascinating, Thankyou… You gave me the new thing I learned for today?

  3. The world is really small! Being a software engineer, I worked twice in my life in image processing projects. Once 15 years ago I worked in South Korea in a company making x-ray scanners for dental clinics. And my part was a kind of “photoshop” – with the same set of tools actually – but integrated into bigger dental software suite and adopted for x-ray images.
Then much later for the last three years before coming to the UK I worked in the Netherland in the company making 3D scanners. That was a big challenge to create software which can recognize objects in 3D space right on the fly while scanning. It is now in use for automated lettuce harvesting using robots in Arizona and California…
For the video editing software that was one of the questions, I intended to ask one day when I was joining the MLT club. But I supposed so that you most likely use Adobe Premier. I only have experience with Pinnacle Studio.
Another question which I also already got an answer before having a chance even to ask it was what the drone did you use making Once Upon A Time video. I already found on one of the pictures in the Photo section that was Maven 2 Pro. Correct?

    1. Fascinating! That must be an interesting field to work in, that surely took you around the world.

To answer your questions: Yes, for video editing we mainly use the Adobe Suite – Premiere and After Effects. But we are actually considering changing programs as some of their competitors are really innovating the game right now. A lot of people seem to be making the switch to Black Magic’s DaVinci Resolve. Once we finished some of our current video projects, we will give it some consideration.

For the recent drone shots Dad used a DJI Mavic 2, Zoom (there are slight differences to the “Pro”: https://store.dji.com/guides/mavic-2-pro-vs-zoom/). They have really become highly professional tools, shoot in 4k and the stuff you can do with them is amazing. Dad loves it! There’ll certainly be more drone shots in upcoming videos 🙂

      1. Lisa, you can’t imagine how did you help me! I’m in search of a good video editing tool and this DaVinci Resolve is looking like right what am I need. Thanks a lot for the clue. Their web-site is impressive. I like especially this feature: “Just select the audio and video clips and use the sync command. You can sync based on timecode or by audio waveforms”. So we can record with several cameras and then synchronize the footage that easy. This is exactly what we ( musicians ) need so much to make our music videos. As a programmer, I understood that this shouldn’t be difficult to implement such a feature and just must be already done somewhere by somebody somewhen. I’m eager to try it.
Also, I was under a misapprehension about Mavics. I thought Pro includes everything Zoom has. But as I’ve learnt from the article you sent each of them has its unique advantages. I tend to buy Pro in some nearest future, thus then we could compare impressions.
Thank you for the information, I’ve spent the rest of this evening by reading about all that stuff. Exciting!
May I ask one more question? What do you use for audio editing?
I used to use Adobe Audition in the past, but recently I rather content myself with hardware built-in features of my Zoom-R16 recorder. Now looking again towards computer-based editors, as I want to see visually my tracks on the screen.

  4. That is such a cool story! Kudos Lisa for being recognized for your incredible work. The whole process was really cool!!
I spy Lampi watching the editing process. Making sure Lisa gets it right. ?❤

      1. Hahahahaha??
Either that or Mona forgot her glasses or contacts. ??
Love Lampi being brought along for the Calendar this year!?❤

  5. Long live the MLT people who are in connection! and it’s true, your editions of the video clips are very, very good. All the videos are very original and beautiful.

  6. I remember when the “Time of the Season” video came out watching it in slow motion, pausing it many times and thinking how good the Photoshop work was. (I have been using Photoshop since the first version for Windows came out in the 90’s.) That’s a wonderful compliment to have one of the programmers contact Lisa. I am looking forward to tomorrow’s video. But I have to wonder, Musicians, albums, Photoshop, Premiere, YouTube, Website, social media… Are there 36 hours days in the Wagner house?

    1. Haha that is a good question. Not quite, but we wish there were 😉 Thankfully, we’ve been working with some of these things (photoshop, video editing, recording) for a really long time now. We kind of grew up knowing our way around those programs, always messing with the camera and computer. Dad also taught us a lot! So now that it comes to using it together with our musical projects, it’s all the more useful. ♥

  7. Lisa’s work on the “Time of The Season” video is first rate; I’m reminded of when I was out in LA doing some work in post -production, on some of the earliest Avid systems. A 1- gigabyte drive was the size of a shoebox, with a dozen or so dense magnetic discs inside. We would have to digitize our own footage from 3/4″ videotape. For After Effects-type work we’d book time in a separate facility and hire a digital artist for “paint” effects, etc. Sound mixes on 4-track tape (Rudi knows about those!). It’s pretty Jurassic now but it was cutting edge at the time.

    1. When you really think about it, it is INSANE how quickly things were (and are) changing and developing in that field (or technology in general). It’s mind blowing, and there has never been a time like it! Let’s see how humanity will deal with it 😉

I love hearing about the beginnings of video (and sound) editing. Everything was a lot more … mechanical. Which in a way makes the underlying mechanisms behind what you now do on a computer, a lot more understandable.

  8. My only negative comment is when I went out Christmas shopping today, I listened to the twins Christmas album in the car. It put me in such a good mood I spent way more than I had was supposed too!!!!
    Ho!Ho!Ho!

    1. Hahahahaha. Happens way to easily!
Mona and Lisa put anyone in Fantastic spirits. No matter what kind of day you are having

  9. I’m really looking forward to your next duo session video. The collection is growing at a rapid rate at the moment. That is a nice Photoshop story and it’s good to see you getting such recognition for your wonderful art Lisa. Friday’s are a very special day for all MLT members and the Club Wire is something I look forward to each week. ?❤️

  10. Always love to hear about and see your technical know how when it comes to your music and video creations. Lisa is certainly a super star and impressive in her skills to do with graphics (sketching, photography, photo/video editing….). Looking forward to the new Duo Session video!!!
