On BBC Radio 2 with Steve Harley – Radio Interview

It was Boxing Day, and we had just finished a Saturday Night 2-hour show at the Cavern Club, when we grabbed our things to make our way to the Liverpool bus depot. The night bus to London was to pick us up at 1.30am. We usually take the train to London but they don’t run on Boxing Day.

So there we were, on a night bus, with two guitars, trying to sleep on a row of seats, heading down south to perform with Steve Harley the next morning on BBC Radio 2,  the UK’s most listened to Radio Station with 15 million weekly listeners. Talk about a good adventure 😉

Several hours and cabs later we arrived Sunday morning at the BBC Radio 2 building and met up with Barry Wickens, Steve Harley’s violonist and allround musician. It wasn’t long since we had all been on tour together across the country the month before. To see photos from that tour check out the photo archive 2015!

We grabbed a breakfast burrito, got warmed up and headed into the studio with Steve and Barry. Everything that happened next got aired live:

Barry Wickens, Mona, Richard Madeley & Lisa in the BBC Radio 2 building in London

The first song is called “A Friend For Life” (04:00) and it’s Lisa on solo guitar, Mona on the acoustic guitar (finger picking), Barry on the violin and of course Steve on the vocals.

We finish off the show with Steve’s biggest hit “Come Up And See Me (Make Me Smile)” (13:15) where it’s Lisa on guitar, Mona on percussion and of course backing vocals …. oh la la la. Barry is playing the solo in this one.

We’ve heard of many people who caught the segment live … did you?

Since we were in London already a little shopping spree to Carnaby Street was mandatory afterwards. Once synonymous with the Swinging 60’s how could we not ;-)!

A pair of boots and two vinyl records stored in our bags, we hopped on the train back home (no more night buses necessary) and enjoyed the last few days of 2015.

Stay groovy,
Mona & Lisa

  1. I love hearing and seeing your amazing adventures. So very kind of you both to keep sharing.
15 million listeners ! Holy Cow!! I would be like, how fast can I get there? You had to be over the moon when you found out. And in joyous oblivion.
Is this the same market that you were at in your video Wonderful Christmas time?
Thanks again Ladies for.sharing another special memory with us.

  2. Thanks for posting the radio show, I enjoyed it as always. It was delightful to hear you both play the guitar, and “A Friend for Life” was especially beautiful and sweet. Lovely guitar sounds and violin there. I have no doubt in my mind that you are both identical twins because there are still scenes in the “Two of Us” video when you were very little I still have trouble telling you apart, and in one close up photo of Mona in Lanzarote Exploring the Island slide show (3rd from last photo) I thought it was Lisa at first glance if it were not for the blond hair. 🙂

  3. That was a fun listen to… The first time I had actually ever heard of Come Up and See Me Smile was the Duran Duran version back in the 80s…loved it and now I love Steve and MLT’s take… Well… I prefer it ????????????????????????????????????️????????????????

  4. Wow guys! Another great radio interview and promotional opportunity for MLT. You certainly show true dedication with your efforts to make it to this interview.

“A Friend For Life” is a real little gem of a song and I’ll be checking it out for further listening.
Also great to hear this version of his huge hit from the seventies, “Come Up And See Me (Make Me Smile)”. Nice work with just the four of you working so well together!

Of course, no self respecting ‘sixties chicks’ could possibly be in London without visiting Carnaby Street. Thanks again for sharing these radio events with us.
