Happy Birthday Sgt. Pepper!

Not often does the whole world go nuts over an album’s birthday but it certainly did when ”Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band” turned 50. It jumped back to #1 in the Official UK Album Charts and sent Liverpool and Beatles fans around the world into a frenzy. This Beatles album might be the single most iconic album in music history ever. Being the Beatle crazies that we are, we of course joined in on the celebrations. Happy Birthday Sgt. Pepper!

BBC Radio Merseyside put on a show “Liverpool plays Pepper” where radio legend Billy Butler (and former Cavern Club DJ during Beatle Days in the 60’s) invited musicians and friends of the Beatles to tell their stories connected to the album and play some live music. Here’s the whole show for you to listen back to:

We performed “Getting Better” (PART 1 – 25:00) and “She’s Leaving Home” (PART 2 – 00:30) live at the studio and got to chat with Billy Kinsley (The Merseybeats, Liverpool Express), Ray Ennis (The Swinging Blue Jeans) and Peter Hooton (The Farm) about many things Pepper. They told some fascinating stories of their time with John, Paul, George & Ringo which are all included in the podcast above.

The only song off the album we ever recorded at the studio was “When I’m Sixty-Four” and it’s our second most popular Beatles cover on YouTube! A big shout-out to everyone who has discovered us through this cover! To check out other appearances from us on Billy Butler’s show, jump to this blog post to hear them all.

Stay groovy,
Mona and Lisa

  1. I love finding new ones. This is my first listen to this version of “She’s Leaving Home”. Listening through earbuds. This is so moving. The girls’ voices truly convey the emotion of the parents’ sense of loss and regret. Their guitars sound like they are right in front of me. Replay time. “It’s Getting Better” This recording is awesome. It sounds so clean. I love the echo of the studio.
    Replay time.

    JP. Now I can’t complain

  2. Very nice to listen to these radio interviews and the two of you singing ‘Getting Better’ and ‘She’s Leaving Home’ once again. Must have been a very special time for you in Liverpool.

  3. Getting Better was great but She’s Leaving Home is absolutely beautiful. It brought tears to my eyes.

    1. I know what you mean. Every time I am here in the Club, I can’t help but coming back here to listen to She’s Leaving Home one more time. Just sublime.

  4. What a treat to hear Mona and Lisa singing live “Getting Better” and “She’s Leaving Home”. Their beautiful voices just floating those melodies so wonderfully. I especially love how their vocal highs just weave in and out with the lows, and that classical mandolin playing in She’s Leaving Home. Just delightful! I can listen to this all day long.
