Catch The Wind – Duo Session

We’ve been playing this song for a long time. There even is a video on YouTube of us doing this song live on a radio station and we also played it during last year’s Christmas Livestream. Not to mention the hundreds of times we played it live on stage.

We thought it deserved its own properly recorded Duo Session after all these years. So here it is 🙂

We’ve met Donovan a couple of times over the years, and he was always so kind and encouraging and saying the nicest things about our music. That really meant a lot as we’ve grown up on his music and consider him a great influence on what we do. We talk a bit more about him and his music in the first “What’s On The Table” episode we ever did.

We hope you enjoy this Duo Session and send big hugs,

Mona & Lisa

  1. Ahhh. One of the first songs I used to play on the guitar and sing, but certainly not as beautiful as this. Such a nice song – I’ve missed it so I am glad you reminded me of it again.

  2. I’ve been listening to this song on my new, SIGNED 🤗, Duo Sessions II cd, on repeat in the car all weekend. Today I finally got around to watching the video. I’m always impressed and appreciative of how you find ways to add percussion to your Duo Sessions selections — Lisa’s slapping the strings while she sings the first verse is simple, but perfect. And I know I’ve mentioned this before, but even though I can hear the harmony with the Everly Brothers and with Simon and Garfunkel, it’s never as clear and easy to hear than when the MLTs sing together. Every song is a harmony tutorial — many thanks! 👍🏼

  3. Mmmmmmmm Mmmmmmm! 🙂
Nice work from Donovan, Mona and Lisa.
Your voices get smoother and better all the time. Nicest harmonies as usual 🙂

I have to congratulate Papa Rudi also.
These Duo Sessions are always beautifully recorded and mixed.
I like that the voices are panned quite far apart. In this one in particular, I hear Lisa’s voice quite far right and a bit louder than Mona’s which is hard left. It’s nice to hear the melody and harmony clearly and separately as much as together.
I especially like that the sound of the whole thing is not at all cluttered with effects and that there is not a lot of compression.
The beauty is made bigger in that it sounds real.

  4. OMG, I just noticed Lisa’s capo matches her guitar. Nice!
While I’m here I have to say how beautiful Lisa and Mona’s harmonies are on this one. They are amazing.

  5. Never heard this song before so thank you for introducing it to me. You sang and played it so beautifully and with so much soul and feeling.

  6. The most beautiful version of this song I have ever heard!🎸🎤⭐This song brings back so many good memories for me!💖👍

  7. We stayed in “The Donovan Suite” at the Joshua Tree Inn, just outside the National Park in Southern California. This little motel has an amazing place in Rock and Roll history. There are interviews out on the ‘net with Donovan and others talking about it. Joshua Tree National Park is only a couple of hours drive from Los Angeles and yet it is like a different planet. The landscape looks like a Dr. Seuss drawing. My MLT profile cover image is from JTNP. …speaking of Club 27… a promising player named Gram Parsons died at the Inn in 1973 just 2 months before he turned 27. Gram helped to introduce Keith Richards to a whole genre of American music. There are some people who maintain that “Wild Horses” was written by Gram. His band, The Flying Burrito Brothers released a recording of the song nearly a year before The Stones. It is a great song and I can’t hear it without thinking it sounds like Gram.

    1. In 1987 we went to visit our friends who were stationed near LA. From there we took his sooped up Chevy for a ride to Vegas. Naturally the car had one of those insane audio setups from the 80’s. You are right, though, that area is like another planet. The longest distance I have ever ridden in a straight line. I remember trying to ignore the speedometer. My buddy was a little crazy. Dude, that sign said 75. Yep. We’re doing 90. Yep. We were 22 year old small-town kids flying through the desert, listening to U2 on our way for a few days in Vegas. It’s a wonder we are still alive.

Sorry, but I can’t talk about the Vegas part of the trip. You know the rule.

  8. Just catching up with what’s been happening in the Club while I have been away – and what a lovely surprise. Mona and Lisa’s voices are maturing like fine wine. They really suit this gently mellow song. Even better than their enchanting version for the radio.

  9. This Duo Session is ready for the world. I can’t wait to see it take off on youtube. With the first listen I couldn’t wait for Mona to join in singing
I felt the same anticipation waiting for Mona’s voice to join in as with Both Sides Now. Your voices always fill the room with every session, but tonight this one is perfect.

I would love to be a fly on the wall when Donovan watches this amazing performance. I am sure there were tears.

I think I’ll click Both Sides Now.

    JP

  10. This session is so kool. As it ends my mind’s ear is expecting a thunderous applause. Love the way you ended this one. Your solemn silence is very moving.

  11. Very beautiful version ! Donovan was marketed as a Britain´s answer to Bob Dylan but as a matter of fact they were very different kind of artists. Both started as folk singers but Donovan was less angry one though he sang some protest songs too (“Universal Soldier”, “The War Rages On” etch). Most of his songs were gentle love songs like this. When he turned into rock, his music was among the psychedelic rock made in Britain. His double album “A Gift From A Flower To A Garden” (1967) is a psychedelic masterpiece.

  12. Hello my MLT! Sorry so late watching this. A little over a week ago I fell from the door jam of my semi. Bruised my left side to include my ribs. Told my wife it’s OK, I’ve fallen from tanks. She yelled, that’s when you were 30s! Lol that being said. I so love the intimate setting of the Duo Sessions. At age 15 I fell in love with, deeply, for a woman that graduated with my sister. She was 19. She was a bit hippish. We’d sit on her bed listening to music. Especially the folkish type rock. This puts me right back there at 15. So beautiful my MLT. I do wish to add that Monas harmonica playing has gotten so good. Even with the brace. As my friend Paul would say, Highly Combustible, it’s a keeper! Loved it. Was meaning to remember to listen and enjoy earlier. When you drop this I’ll send it to my friend. I think there’s another reactor I might try out with a MLT reaction soon. She has nice demeanor. Till next time. Peace. Stay safe. God Speed. Stay Groovy! 🌹❤️🤘

    1. Ken, just read your message. Hope that you are feeling better. When this Duo Session is available via You Tube, Highly Combustible will love it!

  13. While it is still April 22 here, I would like to wish everyone a happy National Beagle Day! Thank you again, Mona and Lisa, for a great Duo Sessions performance. In addition to the great musicianship that you always exhibit, it was an emotional performance.

  14. Fun scrolling thru all the comments. M&L following in the tradition of the Beatles with their choice covers. Early in their career, the Fabs were referred to as the World’s Best Cover Band. And they were. I enjoy listening to the “Live at the BBC” Recordings as much as their studio albums of original music. And feel the same way about MLT.

  15. Goodness! I’m sure the old man Mr. Leitch is grinning from wrist to wrist after watching you kids do a marvelous version of his song about impossible. You guys have caught the wind of all the club members and many others for sure but, you’ve got to stop and smell the roses. True love happens when you least expect it. And, be careful, the ancient Greeks believed that true love was a temporary form of insanity 🙂
I’m Still in love with The MonaLisa Twins.

  16. Beautiful Song Beautifully Played Angelically Sung ! Always love the Duo Sessions Always will, Thank You for sharing and also for the Whats On The Table another one of my favorites.

  17. Wunderbar! The Duo Sessions are my favorite, and this one is another great one. It doesn’t hurt that this has always been one of my favorite songs. Your beautiful harmony really shines here, and Mona’s harmonica play was perfect, as it was in the Advent Calendar live performance.

You two really put yourselves into these sessions. Mona seemed to be a little emotional at the end of this one, like she was at the end of “Vincent”.

“Catch the Wind” is a classic sad song about falling in love, but a love that will never be. My first time falling in love was as a freshman in high school, and believe it or not, her name was Mona. As I was a bit shy, I had to muster all my courage to take the long walk to her house and ask her out. The chances were much better than 1 in 8,000,000,000 but she said no, and I had my first heartbreak.

    1. I know the feeling. A lot of us men went through the same thing. I was rejected by 10,000 women (of course, I am exaggerating) before I met my first girlfriend at 28.

  18. Yesterday I was only able to watch this on my phone. Just watched it on a big screen. I’m not sure you could do this in front of a live audience of club members. Imagine you look up when Mona’s harmonies begin and everyone has tears streaming down their faces. Love your outfits. They really set the mood.
    Love Marlo & JP

  19. I’ve always loved your cover and video of this song on Becky Wants radio show, and I love this even more. Lisa’s singing and your harmonies are so moving, touches me deep inside, such magic. It makes me feel so much longing and emotion! Mona’s blues harp is amazing. I can see Becky was just as moved by your radio performance. You do Donovans song “fantastic” justice. Thanks for this amazing slice of heaven.🎼💛❤

  20. Thanks for this great Donovan Duo Session. Due to the Duo Sessions or WOTT I now listen to music I did not know, or not very good, before e.g. Donovan, Melanie or Cat Stevens; I often knew the hits now I listen to the complete albums. Thanks.

  21. The word ‘Beautiful’ is used so very often in the comments below. This is a wonderful performance. Like Philip I want to comment ‘but can’t find the words to describe’. Thank you so much

  22. I’ve listened to this song several times. Just listening to the harmonies, and the beautiful melody from the guitars. You guys really know how to bring it. Oh, the last time I listened to the lyrics, and I was reminded of a terrible crush I had on Donna, a cheerleader from another school. But I snapped out of it when I remembered her boy friend. Lol. Peace be.

  23. Very lovely. And yes, a bit melancholy. Another in the list of wonderful songs you do that tug at the heart. I love Duo Sessions. Thanks so much.

  24. Beautiful song by Donovan and beautiful cover by you, you are incredible, you have the genius to make the song better than the original, merci beaucoup pour cette superbe verion.

  25. You girls just make EVERYTHING sound better than the original….you really do…it’s amazing……I’ve watched the video of this song when you performed it on the Becky Wants show on the BBC wearing Christmas hats….and since You brought it up about the Christmas video show there was also another song you sang from your past ..ALONE…..please consider ALONE as a Duo Session…it is a beautiful song ! ❤️🧡

  26. Oh, but you did catch the wind! I get choked up with this one. The smooth warmth is so loving and caring that it shields us from all the pain and leaves us in a pool of love.
    Thank you!

  27. Beautiful rendition ladies. Always a special treat when Mona plays a little harmonica.

A fan (small f) of Donovan back in the day, always enjoyed hearing the singles (but didn’t buy) on the radio, so his greatest hits album a perfect purchase. This song and “Colours” not hits around here, so heard them for first time when listening to the LP. Became favorites, and ideal songs to play for a fledgling guitarist.

  28. Some number of songs somewhere into the Duo Sessions time line I developed a habit. After seeing a new one, I would ask the room “How do you keep doing that?” Meaning how are you able to cover an incredible song that was released more than a half-century ago, pay proper homage to it and still make it unmistakably MLT? Just as I was about to ask that today, I think it came to me.

It is not merely that you are fans of the songs; I think you exhibit the ability to convey the effect they made on you via the way you perform the cover, particularly in the Duo Session format.  It’s subtle, but strikes me as a fine line that weaves into your personal views of the song, and how you translate that for all of us. That takes sincerity, intelligence, talent, and no small amount of courage. I sit in front of the computer dumbfounded for a while before I can draft a post. Brava, Mona & Lisa!

I’ll say it once more; my thirteen bucks a month feels like I’m ripping you off…

  29. Just a beautiful job, Ladies… perfect harmonies and an extension of Donovan’s lovely presentation. I noticed Lisa being capoed and Mona not, but both of you essentially playing in first position chords. I was interested in why you did this? Was it to give the breadth of the sound of different chord shapes within a relatively uncomplicated song? I personally loved the effect and whatever you do – and why ever you do it, it always makes my day!

    1. Thanks Brian! I love finger picking in the key of G, there is lots of cool stuff that’s easily accessible so I like to use a capo if I can 🙂 It adds a bit of variety on top of picking different patterns.

      1. Ive learned a lot watching both of you play. For sure I obviously love to hear you guys sing, but I enjoy watching you play. Thanks for making the charts available in the club, its been a real help. I had given up on my guitar but decided it deserved another new set of strings. After all, we’ve been together for almost 50 years!

  30. Wow!
I have long enjoyed the BBC radio version you have posted on YouTube. It is full of joy and energy, and, although it was not the best of circumstances, it has remained a favorite of mine.
The is s version is different. Slower, more full of melancholy, but showcasing a maturity and sense of direction. Now I don’t know which I like better! Thank you for a proper recording!

  31. Nothing beats the Duo Sessions! Love hearing Mona and Lisa playing in their little corner of their home, giving us their gift of music. A wonderful rendition.

Thank you ladies. Enjoy your weekend.

  32. The Oxford dictionary defines sublime as ‘of such excellence, grandeur, or beauty as to inspire great admiration or awe’. That word nails this wonderful Duo Session. Of course that word can be used for all your music! Thank you for a wonderful start for the weekend. 🙂

  33. Thank You Mona & Lisa, for once again getting the weekend off to a fantastic start!!
I have loved this song for years, and in my opinion, you Lovely Ladies give us the ultimate cover of it.
Loved the original video you posted of it(especially all the Christmas memories),and the version from the Livestream as well. When you said you might perform it in a Duo Session I was like Oh Yeah!!! can’t wait.Have a great weekend.

Love & Hugs to Team MLT💛💓
    Tom

  34. My favorite Donavon song. It was given the magical MLT treatment of beautiful vocals and instrumentation. Donavon would be proud.

  35. What a beautiful rendition of a great song. Thx ladies for once again bringing “The Friday Smiles” as well as happy tears sometimes. Both of you bring so much to the music. The harmonica adds to the bluesy feel and is played perfectly. When you met Donovan and/or John Sebastian did you ever discuss the art of playing the harmonica? Hope you and your family have a great weekend!!

    1. Thanks Dave, I hope you have a great weekend too! I don’t remember talking to Donovan about playing the harmonica specifically but we love his playing style.

  36. I always loved the YouTube video of this song (so did the DJ, the look on her face was pure bliss) I love this version even more! (You should see my face right now!) Every dau I love you gals more!

  37. This just made my Friday!! You both are so undeniably unforgettable. Thank the heavens above for your talents. Beautiful harmonics…

    1. Hey Roger, I’ve listened to it 4 or 5 times and it just gets better. No one can sing harmonies like Mona and Lisa.

  38. My favorite Donovan song. I have certainly felt that way in various times in my life! A beautiful number brought back to life as only Mona and Lisa can. Awesome.

  39. Amazing, I had a tear in my eye by the second verse. Any new members who haven’t seen the 2022 Christmas livestream should do so just for the music. Another beautiful Friday. Thank you girls!!

      1. Lisa, I joined just before the 2022 Livestream. I just like going back and listening to the music.

      2. Awe, no problem Lisa. I still feel like a newbie anyways because I haven’t seen everything in The Club. So much content to go through, I’m just thankful to be here.

  40. Beautiful 👏👏👏. Beautifully played, beautifully sung. Thank you.
May your weekend be as wonderful as this performance.

  41. OMG Thank you so much for re doing that lovely song Mona and Lisa! I had tears in my eyes watching and listening to this, because you have done this song beautiful with your blend of voices and love and it reaching out to us with a big hug! I have often pulled up the video of you both playing this on the radio station back in the day and have always loved this song. I can not express how much this song sounds to me, I sit back with my eyes closed and have a happy and wonderful feeling hearing you both blend and harmonize and Mona playing the harmonica and Lisa playing the little riffs that make this song sound beyond what anyone can imagine. As always hope to see this on the next Duo Sessions album and thank you for kicking off the weekend for all of us. God Bless with hugs and love from Bill and Maddie Isenberg Huge fans from Pittsburgh PA USA

One last thing? Will you both consider re doing The Best Years of our Lives?? Another gem that you both do so well.

    1. Thank you, Bill! We love this song so much so it was great to finally record it as a Duo Session. I don’t see ourselves re doing “The Best Years Of Our Lives” as that’s already on a CD and we’re really happy with its recording. Glad you like that one too!

      1. Thank you Lisa! I must agree that version is perfect. Again thank you for responding. Stay Groovy…Oh I just played this for Maddie when she got home from school and is amazed how Mona can play the harmonica and play guitar at the same time!

      2. I also agree with Maddie…it’s fascinating and mind boggling .. Mona ~MagicalMusicMakerMultitasker 🤘🏻💜🌞

  42. Good morning, I have been waiting for this for a while now. Just Beautiful!!!!! You just made my day!!!! Encore Thank you and Stay Groovy!!!!

  43. Beautiful rendition of a sixties classic!

May I suggest looking at the Byrds catalog from that era and maybe perform their best song, Pete Seegar’s “Turn, Turn, Turn?”

    1. That’s a great song! We’ll add it to the long list of potential cover songs 🙂
Thanks for the comment, I’m glad you like this version!

  44. Hi Ladies,
Once again, you have given us a wonderful treat. Catch The Wind is as graceful a song as there ever was. It’s haunting melody and lyrics are one that a ship would hear as it approaches a lighthouse.
You have managed to capture all that and more. Mona’s blues harp gives one chills, as if suddenly you are walking through a haunted house on a cool windy night and the shutters are slapping against the windows and the floors are creaking. Whilst the moon is full. It’s the type of sound you would hear in your mind as you slowly creep throughout the rickety old house.
Thanks Ladies for a brilliant cover and setting the mood for this weekend.
    All the best
    Rick Ross

  45. To wake up to a Duo Session on a Friday morning, is amazing. What a way to start the day! It’s 8:25am as I write this, here in Acton, Canada. I have not heard Catch The Wind in years (maybe decades). You have kept it true to the original, but those oh-so-sweet harmonies are the icing on the cake. Thank you for sharing, and lots of love! XOXO

  46. Good Morning,
Nice way to begin the day.
The song is so sweetly melodic. So soothing.
Mona & Lisa sound better than Donovan.
    Take care.
    Love & Peace,
    Bobby S.

  47. Whoops, half awake when posting….it should of read ” guitaring”…. I need my Morning Tea, Stat, to awaken fully my brain….. 😉🙃☕

  48. WooHoo, well done, Kudos, indeed a beauty of a Duo Session classic, from the harmonies, the guitarist, lovely essences of harmonica intertwine all so complimentary with each others to create a wonderful uplifting rendition…. Top Notch Calibre …. A lovely Wake Up To Friday morning inspiration to start my day with… Thankyou for this, much Appreciated, Loved, Smile On my face instant worthy…. 🤘💜💯

  49. Yes this song deserves a Duo Session sung beautifully and the harmonica playing was out of this world. Love you two girls.

  50. Thanks so much for this wonderful start to the day! Missed seeing my favorites in a Duo Session – MLT harmonies make the sun seem to shine a little brighter. Mona – fantastic job with the harmonica and the lovely high harmonies that only you can do. Lisa – really loved your soulful lead singing and beautiful fingerpicking. And you both look more lovely each time I see you.
Hope you enjoy your day as much as I will…

  51. I was a little boy in about the second or third grade (USA) when this song originally came out and the melody touched me deeply. Things were not going well in my young life, and I wanted some of what the lyrics mention. Today, as a much older man, I am again touched by the MLT version of the song, and the harmonies you two ladies created. I enjoyed the bridge between my past and the present. Thank you.

  52. Great cover!!!!! Many songs bring back a different time. For me this song is 1969 (the slow version of the song) when I was 15 going on 16……..riding around in a car with a slightly older friend for the first summer when he and I could go cruising which meant freedom and meeting new people……first “puppy love” for me including all the ‘drama’. And, one song that served as the background music for this time was Donovan’s 1969 version of the song playing in the 8-track.

      1. I have no 8-tracks. The 8 track players kept getting stolen from my car. Back then, 8-tracker players were easy “smash and grab” items. I might have some cassettes in a box somewhere. Mostly I have CDs.

  53. Me too….just got out of bed to get the day started…check my emails and stopped to listen ….beautiful…but now I’m running behind 😂gotta go❤️🧡

  54. So soothingly sublime! It immediately brings to mind the most touching image in any MLT video, when young Mona and Lisa huddle around PapaRudi on the couch as he reads them something in the radio studio version of this song. Gorgeous harmonies and vocalizations, consistently beautiful guitars and Mona’s perfectly performed blues harp make this amazing! It only increases my anticipation of the forthcoming new Duo Sessions album!

  55. Hello beauties…
Instinctively, this so great performance gave me an sweet reminder of Simon & Garfunkel…
    Don’t ask me why ? I can’t explain it.
The harmony of your voices up together on that balade, the rhythm of the music, …
    I love it.

  56. Like Brian, I was rushing to get ready for work when this stopped me in my tracks. It is so very beautiful! It may be impossible to “catch the wind” but your performance of this lovely song helped me to breathe and find my still, small center for a few moments. My day will proceed better with this little haven of calm within me! Thank you!

  57. We have always loved your performance of this on the radio show. Your harmonies are so beautiful here. I have a feeling you are bringing grown men to tears this morning. Mona’s blues harp is as moving as ever.

    Marlo and JP

  58. Getting ready to rush out the door for a busy Friday when I saw your email, and had to stop and tune in. I’m so glad I did! Just lovely, ladies, and it gave me a chance to take a breath and relax. My Friday just got a whole lot better! Thank you, as always for your thoughtful rendition of another classic!

  59. just great ,fits perfectly with your voices.nice fingerpicking style as well-like Donovan.
please retry ‘Junk’ from Paul again – that would be for sure another perfect song for your voices. carry on you are great.
