Making a DIY Planter – Arts & Crafts

When life gives you pallets …

… you turn them into a herb garden.

Every so often we get into new hobbies, and last year that new hobby was gardening for me (Mona) … everything about it.

I came across a video on YouTube of a lady upcycling an old wooden pallet and I immediately got the urge to recreate one myself. We actually had one of these pallets lying around after a CDs delivery, so you can imagine my excitement when I realised I could turn something from our backyard into additional planting space. More gardening real estate!

I dragged Lisa and Dad into it too, and we filmed the whole process of this little impromptu DIY project. Now, 6 months later, we finally got around to edit it!

We doubt you visit the MLT Club to get DIY inspiration but we thought some of you might enjoy this little silly clip anyway. 😉

I wonder if this gardening & DIY fascination will kick back in again once the weather gets nicer. Let’s be real, if we gave this another attempt, we could hardly do a worse job 😉

Stay groovy!
Mona & Lisa

  1. Just watched this love to see what your up to very enjoyable may just need fixing to the wall so it doesn’t blow over if you still have it

  2. Inspiring! My wife’s always on at me to make things out of pallets but I hate the way they’re made from such springy wood that won’t let nails pull out of it. This project doesn’t involve taking the pallet apart and we do have some dementor fabric lying around, so I might just have a go! Thanks, Mona!

  3. Well done on the recycling front. Really imaginative use of a pallet. Had to rewind a couple of times to make sure I heard right since I’m sure ‘Wonky’ isn’t in my english/german dictionary! And ‘staple the crap out of it’ had me laughing out loud.

  4. Can’t get enough of Mona and Lisa even with the daily Advent calendar videos. Your beautiful and fun personalities make it so enjoyable watching you and your family…
    Great job!

  5. Please do not quit your day jobs!!!!!!!!!! That was hilarious. However, you always have so much fun no matter what you
do. Positive is always the way to go and by the way it is a cute Herb Pallet. You did good.

    Stay Funny Groovy

  6. I really enjoyed this DIY video and having a chance to see the behind-the-scenes of Mona and Lisa at home. There is no better activity than gardening. And while doing it, trying new things. As one who made his living in the horticulture world, I give you both A+s. And I’d hire you both.

My photo to the right was from 26 years ago when my daughter was “driving” the Bobcat [skidsteer] Loader.

  7. Catchy tune, pleasant melody – will be a successful new album; subject matter and lyrics bang in tune with recent New York Times editorials. Very well presented, I am looking forward to hearing the other tracks. By the way, I think you underestimate your pallet modification skills, the finished product looked really good, complimented by a bright floral display : a column in ‘Gardener’s Weekly’ awaits..!

  8. I just thought this was such a fascinating video. It shows a side of MLT doing the kinds of things we all do in our daily lives. To me, it endears you two to us fans even more by doing things in a non-performance atmosphere. Mona, please do worry about the “whale” pocket, I have done much worse things in my DIY projects. I love this video!

  9. So funny! Watching this was very entertaining! I didn’t know you had moved to No. 4 Privet Drive.
Those fingers are so agile, coordinated, fast and nimble on a guitar, but on a sander or a stapler… not so much!
    Loved it!

  10. I can’t speak for everyone,,but I hate when my pallet is wonky!!! LOL This was truly entertaining!! I always enjoy things like this that we get a glimpse of your true personalities. Well done I say!!!

  11. Maybe you do music better but you sure did this pallet than I ever could. Mona, be careful with those tools !

  12. Noooo !!!
    That’s a nice idea, but don’t let Mona use DIY tools, it’s too dangerous ???? ???? .

  13. so here’s another thing you two do better than me! This was a very entertaining video! Perhaps you could cover the lower third with a flowery sheet to cover up the bulgy whale bit! You guys are so groovy!

  14. I loved watching this and had to laugh when Rudi said “this part looks like a whale that is going to explode” No criticism here. I probably would have stapled my hand to the pallet or drilled a hole through my leg. So fun to see you at home!!

  15. I love this video.I watched it late at night and I had a dream about you last night.I wish you a good rest and relaxation and new creative ideas.

  16. There were moments of laughing here…”staple the crap out of it”…gotta love that…soundtrack was great especially the No More Worries Company part and I WAS worried watching Mona with that staple gun it looked like she had it pointing at herself and WOW that would’ve hurt if accidentally pulled the trigger…..it reminded me of 20 years ago when I had a next door neighbor lady in her 80’s….she and I would “work” in the yard planting various flowers…she would get such a kick out of it because it was her high point of everyday to putter around in the yard… she would make a big deal of it as she would have freshly baked cookies for us to enjoy while puttering around…..even my two little kids would “help out”…that is to say they would wipe out the cookies..LOL…but that just added more enjoyment for our neighbor as she loved the kids and their way of helping !! Those two kids are now in their early 20’s and still remember those cookies !…Thanks for the video and “the memories “❤️????

  17. I loved this video thanks for sharing it. Just today I was wondering what activities they do in their free time and here is an answer.

I hope and please share us more videos like this.

    Regards.

  18. Two world class musicians sharing candid video of getting their hands dirty with a backyard DIY project? This is what makes the MLT Club so incredibly fun. Just priceless. Thanks for sharing and good luck with the gardening. [And of course loved the blend of background music.]

  19. You two are hilarious.  This was fun to watch.  It is one of the best DIY soundtracks I’ve ever heard.

When Mona admitted to being afraid of the staple gun, I was scared for Lisa’s safety.  But then when Mona whispered, “Just staple the crap out of it”. you could see she was more at ease.  Or does that make her even more dangerous with those Ninja like reflexes?

Who has the koolest Dad in the room?
    Mona and Lisa, that’s who

Thanks for sharing this.  I am trying to build up motivation to paint our house this spring, so this kinda helps.

    TGIF!

  20. Oh my !! That was great fun!! This shows you both in your home doing what you would do while you are not making music. You made something beautiful out of nothing, and learned some do it yourself along the way. The music added in was great too from your “Orange” album. Seeing the little clips being splashed with orange paint was pretty wild. I’m sure you didn’t think that !! I like this being yourselves doing just what you like to do. To me, it shows that you’re both talented in other ways besides music. Bravo !! I do hope you’ll being do more of this too in the future. I had a big smile on my face the whole time and including your Father in there also shows a Family who works and plays together. Lovely !! As always, Peace, Love and Happiness

  21. The music mixed in really well while showing us some of your real life in the special way that you seem to be able to include us all without even trying. Oh and much thanks for the birthday message last week, it made my day.

  22. I loved watching this! It’s great that Mona is into gardening, I’ve been gardening since I was little. Nice pansies and herbs! Mona, get some Cosmos and Portulaca! 2 of my favorites! I hope you will show us more of your gardening stuff as the warmer weather comes. Thank you girls and papa Rudi! Good job! Almost time to start some seeds here in another month or so.

  23. Hey that was so fun! Was great to see the two of you working together on a project with Papa Rudi helping here and there. Wasn’t quite sure what you were making, but it started to come together and turned out nice, and you looked like a pro Mona with those tools, and Lisa with the brush, despite those fumes that seemed to make Lisa dose off there. LOL. What a clever idea, and always nice to see something different like this. Enjoyed it much, thanks! Have a great weekend. 🙂

  24. Hi Dear Girls, I loved this video, it’s nice to see a little of your daily life. You did a great job with the help of Papa Rudi … your plants will be happy .. but please, be careful .. don’t get hurt … I also liked the subtitles in the video .. I don’t speak english very well .. but I can read well .. and the subtitles help a lot .. thanks and stay groovy.

  25. Thanks for the smiles you gave me on a day I wasn’t sure I’d have any.
This gives me some ideas for this spring.
    Hugs my friends

  26. This was so exciting to watch, and fun. You did a great job putting this together for us. Also thank you to Dad , like a good dad he over looked to make sure no one got hurt. LOL…But the cool thing is you took time to do this for us with your busy schedule and so cool to share time just doing a cool thing like this project. Here in the USA North East part it has been awful weather wise, we just got into the 40’s this week and before this? We had snow and freezing rain and oh yea did I mention snow? I am so tired of shoveling and just today I actually seen the color of my truck, which is blue, lately it has been dark and grey….LOL…But love this video, please post more like this if you can with different projects you come across, I May try this project myself and report back to you.

  27. So enjoyable, ladies! These little glimpses into your everyday lives make you so relatable, and even more lovable!(if that were possible) It seems like you’re neighbors just down the street, rather than across an ocean, six time zones away. You don’t just feel like friends anymore, you truly are treasured friends! When I garden, I prefer to be bare-handed, too, but I did ???? when you used the sand paper, Mona. One slip would have surely resulted in splinters in your magnificently talented digits. Awesome to see you three just being yourselves! I can’t believe you found another way to spread joy to us all. Thank you!

  28. I think your little DIY project was very entertaining. It demonstrates that the Mona-Lisa Twins are more than just pretty faces, excellent singers, and talented musicians. Your lack of experience with DIY projects of this kind didn’t prevent you from accomplishing your goal. You learned as you progressed and we enjoyed the experience right along with you. Any time you have another project of any type that you want to record and share, we fans of MLT will be tickled to be in the audience.

  29. That was cool! Green thumb Mona and her able bodied side kick, Go Pro Lisa.
So it wasn’t perfect. Jt turned out really well.. you should be proud. Thats what makes it different and unique. Just like the two of you.
Other than a few words, that’s the first time I have heard Rudi talk????????
Here is another idea for using pallets. You probably saw them in the Advent calendar. It can be used in the Fall and at Christmas.
These are reverse sides of each other. Turn it over and there it is. Just pull the boards off on the pallet. And assemble like the picture shows. Its very simple to do, and being the artists that you are, the faces are very easy to do.
Thanks for the wonderful and insightful DKY video today. You should do more of them when time permits.
Stay very groovy and all the best,
    Rick Ross

  30. This is one if not my favorite videos, you girls are so sweet, you fill my heart with such joy. Actually, I would love to see more videos like this of you around the house just being you.

I don’t know why but for some reason it brought to mind a picture I believe Lisa took of Mona when you moved into your ne house. It was Mona sitting on the Stairs, and the caption read “Mona The Beast.”

Things like that are fun to see, because it natural and real.

One last thing, I think your Dad is such a Cool Dad, he seems so loving and caring and I know he is so proud of what beautiful, talented and nice girls you are

I just have to say, Love to you and your family for this wonderful video.

  31. I love the video! Everything you all do is entertaining and this is no exception. Some of the flowers in our yard are beginning to bloom. I love this time of year.
It was fun seeing you all taking on a DIY. Thank you for sharing it with us. Later maybe we will see pictures of the plant’s growth? Or, maybe you preparing a meal with some of the herbs like the parsley? Do you have an Air Fryer? Our oldest daughter gave us one. At first I was skeptical, but now I am sold. It’s a double fryer and I bake chicken in one side while I am stir frying vegetables in the other. And with the smart finish feature they are done at the same time.
Sorry, I didn’t mean to digress. Loved the video!!!

  32. That was definitely a unique way of using a pallet…the saggy one was different from the others and it’s always a good thing to be different!
As far as the weather here in the state of Maine, it’s very sunny but very cool…not quite sweatshirt weather just yet but a beautiful day none the less.
Keep on rocking ladies and always have fun, life is too short not too! ❤❤

  33. Loved this and it looked very good for a first attempt. Everyone knows that the hardest part of constructing a planter like that, is to be mindful not to get a ‘saggy bottom’! LOL

  34. Absolutely loved the whole video! Love gardening, love DIY projects! So fun to see you be so naturally sweet and fun – and yes, please be careful with those amazingly talented hands snd power tools. First time I actually remember hearing Papa Rudi for more than a second (in Lola). I also loved you with the fabric as a cape – were you actually doing the “Batman” theme? Very cool in every way. I do have a pro tip – when playing in/working with soil, wearing vinyl gloves makes it easier to clean up and less risk of a stray scratch. Thanks for brightening up a chilly day in the northeast US!

  35. I visit the MLT club to be a part of your lives. And this was perfect. Yes, it was very entertaining. Anything you do is a shot of “virtual sunshine.” I think I will be laughing for days over “Dad, do you want to be here when I hurt myself? – I’d rather not, actually.” ROTFLMAO!!! This is an absolutely adorable project and I really might do it myself! As much as I love your music, I sure hope you do more things like this. Brian St. August really summed up my feelings perfectly. Thank you so much Mona & Support Team! 😀

  36. Pretty adorable video, Mona and Lisa, and I love the songs that you selected. They fit the video really well and made it fun. I love your “not music” videos. They make me smile and laugh. Plus, it’s really great to see some non-music sides of you both. Please keep doing these videos when you have time.

  37. If I ever needed a reason for why I love you girls and your family so much, it is because of things like this where you show your humor, humanity and creativity. All I can say is that you bring happiness, hope and joy to many people in everything you do. You are the model of what successful people should be by promoting love and understanding, not just with your wonderful music, but with your daily lives. Much love … Brian

  38. Thanks so much for sharing this! The first thing I thought was “wow!, how could they have such nice spring weather already!?” After all they are in England! I was very jealous until I read your post and realized it was filmed 6 mos ago. Anyway, I always enjoy seeing what you two are up to. The important thing is you are enjoying life and inspiring everyone around you. I hope those herbs made it through the winter. Now Lisa will need to come up with some original recipes for them!

  39. This was fun. Thanks for sharing some of those non-musical moments. This reminds me of all my hit & miss attempts to assemble furniture over the years. Even with printed instructions! But your project turned out fine! It works, right? Job well done.

  40. Very impressive, better than I’d manage to do, you’re braver for using the corded electric tools than I’d be…lol… in Canada, we refer to “pallets” as ” skids”. Dad when he was still alive and working, would often bring home “skuds” from work and find uses for them around the house, inside and out. I enjoyed watching, being entertained, by the 3 of you, was Michaela inside supervising !?????
