Till There Was You – Early Access

Official Release Date: 21st February 2020

We have picked the release date of this song for a very special reason.

Those of you who have been in the MLT Club for a while or have followed our journey very closely, will have heard us mention “Steve from Miami” from time to time. He was an enormous supporter of our musical career for years before he sadly passed away shortly before Christmas 2019.

To thank him for his incredibly generous support we had made it a tradition that every year for his birthday on February 21st, we would surprise him with a cover of one of his favourite songs. When this February rolled around it was without question that we would do just that again.

Steve will always stay in our hearts and wherever he is now, we dedicate this song to him and hope he’ll like it ❤

Long before we ever got to know Steve this song has also played a huge part in our own school years. We often reminisce about the time when we “caught the Beatle bug” in our early teens and would experience our very own Beatlemania together with our best friend from high school.

When the three of us first saw the video of the Beatles doing this song for the Royal Variety Performance we just about lost our minds and immediately fell in love with it – Paul surely knew what he was doing with all that cute head bobbing! For several weeks to follow we would sing this song to … no, AT anyone who would listen.  During gym class, in the locker rooms (great acoustics!), at the bus stop and even in the tram on the way back from school. We couldn’t get the pretty melody (that includes George’s stunning solo) out of our heads.

Our guitar teacher at the time even transcribed the guitar parts for us although they were a little too advanced for us at the time. We still tried! Ten years later, and after learning that it was one of Steve’s favourite songs too, we want to try it again.

We hope you’ll enjoy the song and video. Let us know if you have any memories connected to the song yourself!

Much love to you all,Mona & Lisa

PS: A little reminder, especially for all the new people in the MLT Club: Please don’t share the video with anyone outside the MLT Club until its official release next Friday. 🙂 Then you can share to your heart’s content – we’d love you to! Thank you!

  1. Vous etes extraordinaire avec vos belles voix, beau solo de guitare avec Lisa et Mona a la batterie, c est merveuilleux, merci pour cette belle version de cette belle chanson.

  2. It really can’t be covered any better. Such great rhythm, guitar work and lovely singing. Hopefully the day will come when you are able/and want to tour again. But if you never do I’ll get over it and just be happy that you are who you are and do what you do.

  3. Yes, Paul was a major head-bobber in those days! I watched that Royal Variety Performance with my parents. Even my Dad, who was hardly a pop fan, remarked “He can sing a bit, that lad”!

  4. I was just on Youtube listening to other covers for this song including the Beatles and Ray Charles. By far yours is more outstanding. This is the best cover, both audio and video. I have now watched this over a dozen times. That riff by Lisa is stunning. This is phenomenal ?❤❤❤✔

  5. The best MLT video ever!!! Thank you for performing my favorite Beatles song. I played my imaginary bongos along with you 🙂 No guitar sounds better on that solo than a Gretsch. When I was 16 (1967) I learned a version of that solo on an acoustic guitar and I had a 4 track reel to reel recorder and I recorded myself over dubbing vocals and playing lead and rhythm. To this day I still enjoy listening to that. Your version is by far the best I have ever heard, better than the Beatles’ original. Can’t wait for your next one.

  6. One of my favorite musicals, and recently the Kristin Chenoweth version from the 2003 remake has been my favorite. Until now. This blows away every previous recording, including the Beatles! You two enrapture me.

  7. To my favourite twins (except for my own twins :-),
You brought tears to my eyes…
This was our first dance at our wedding…1996…
I love this song since childhood…
Your performance is excellent, accurate playing.
    Great harmonies.
I loved the bass part too (I guess it is played by your father? not seen in the video)

  8. This song… Either it’s because I’m entering a “certain phase” of life in Club 50s and/or it simply moves me to water works Theatre…. Can’t wait to “officially share” YT link on Friday (When it’s Friday here… Tomorrow… Lol), Team MLT, the music you poetically create and put out just has some stellar effects on people, the way you convey, just reaches out, grabs people’s ears and geart/spiritsoul… Truly???❤️

  9. One of my own personal favourites that again you ladies have managed to put your own stamp on with subtlety without losing the familiarity of the original. excellent. Mona nice to see you playing the drums again. keep em coming ladies.

  10. What a beautiful tribute to a departed friend, I’m sure Steve is looking down on you and enjoying your beautiful music just as much as i am. Thank you for making this old man very happy with your beautiful harmonies and arrangements of a lot of my favourite music and i hope to be enjoying listening to your wonderful creations for many more years to come. Love and hugs Mona and Lisa from probably one of your oldest fans (70) Martin, County Kilkenny, Ireland.

  11. a beautiful cover of a beautiful song and you know it’s going to be right out the top drawer from the Monalisa twins before you hit the play button keep em coming yeah yeah yeah yeah

  12. What a lovely tribute to Steve from Miami. I love that you brought back the split screen video from the Please, Please me era. Always love to see Mona playing drums, and Lisa, is this the first time your beloved Tennesssean has made an appearance in a video?

    1. Yes, we believe that’s the Tennessean’s big screen debut (or small screen, as many of you will be watching on a phone ;-)) but we have used it quite heavily on recordings for ORANGE and some projects here and there. It was a gift from Steve and we love it. ❤

  13. Perfect, as always! I’m left handed and I prefer more a ballad then a hard rock. So, when I was a kid, my favourite Beatles was Paul (I still sing some of his songs in our family karaoke) and this song brought me some good memories. Thanks!

  14. That was marvelous…..such a good job. I hope you don’t mind but I sang low harmony along with you two while watching it. It was strange that I knew all the words to a show tune at the age of 10…….but this was a good one that brought back a bunch of memories. I, and like others, who have Meet the Beatles/With the Beatles kept listening to the song to hear the very familiar guitar parts and you played it just like the Beatles did. The guitar solo was just like George’s playing on Ed Sullivan. Memories??? Several, while playing Meet the Beatles over and over we knew all the words…..So this video reminded me of seeing them on Ed Sullivan (2nd song; 1st appearance) and listening to their album over and over as Beatlemania began over here. I can’t say enough on how well you did this cover. Just when I think you can’t surprise me anymore……you do it again. Great job!!

    1. There is no such thing as too many harmonies! 😉 The solo is one of our favourite things about the Beatles’ version of that song, especially the way George played it live – it’s perfect!
      Thanks for the kind words!

  15. I always loved that the Beatles did a cover of this song from “The Music Man”. I love your version even more! God bless you for remembering and honoring Steve from Miami. You tow are truly special!

  16. A terrific rendition of a classic. Just when you think your arrangements and videos can’t get any better, you both surprise us!

  17. Who’s playing the bass? I imagine it might be your father Rudi, if not let me know. I played your version of this classic song on my Bluetooth speakers and the bass guitar is more prominent. I hope both of you enjoyed your Valentine’s ❤️?Day yesterday.

  18. Stunning version of a wonderful song. In my very young years it WAS a Lennon and McCartney song until I found out in my teenage years that it was actually a song from the musical The Music Man. Next then 76 Trombones!!

  19. This was absolutely incredible!!!
I first heard this song on my very first record (Meet the Beatles) when I was about 8 years old… and it quickly became a favorite Beatles song. It wasn’t until years later that I discovered it was actually a cover, originally sang by actress Shirley Jones in the musical “The Music Man,” which by the way is one of my favorite musicals! Well, This one TOPS THEM ALL!!! The unbelievable jangle in Lisa’s Gretsch, Mona’s drums, the sweet harmonies… it’s all so perfect!!!

    1. Their version one of those “perfect covers” in our opinion and we’re so glad the Beatles decided to record it (I wonder though if John was too keen on it?). The original version is lovely and all … but then there’s their take 🙂
Thanks for your sweet comment but the Beatles did the leg work here – they turned it into an incredible pop song!

  20. God Bless ‘Steve from Miami’ who has most certainly contributed to and been part of your wonderful musical journey so far. This is a most beautiful, most fitting and most considerate tribute to him indeed. R.I.P Steve….. and love to his proud family.

  21. Ladies, you have done it again! Taken one of my favorite songs and made it a classic of your own. Congratulations and keep up the great work!!

    1. Thanks Norb! It’s always a bit nerve-wracking to have a go at such already perfect songs (it’s one of our favourites, too!) but we’re glad you think we did it proud!

  22. As always, a fantastic rendition of a classic Beatle number. Perfect harmonies, matched by sublime musical skills. Such talent, well showcased with your classy video clip.

  23. OMG! OMG!! I found my reason for living!!!! You are so… intergalactic!! You should send all your music to extraterrestrials… so that you NEVER will be forgotten. But listen… do Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr know what you two are doing? Did they ever invite you for dinner? OMG… I loved the Beatles for decades… TILL THERE WAS YOU

    1. Haha, that’s too sweet and made us laugh! 🙂 To answer your question – we’re pretty sure they do but no – no dinner yet!

  24. Well that was certainly a treat for the eyes and the ears for Valentine’s Day. Always a favorite of mine from the early Beatles releases. Paul would get the gals to swoon with his version of this song from the Music Man. Love Mona’s low harmonies since her voice is so pretty in that range. Everyone looked relaxed performing the song so a splendid time was had by all. Loved this video and I’m certain it will be another one of the members of the Million views club. Thanks ladies!

  25. I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Steve from Miami, one of your very earliest and most devoted fans. We all owe him so much for his incredibly generous support of you early on in your musical journey. This amazing music video certainly does his memory justice. It is so richly sophisticated and a genuine masterpiece. I have always loved this song and I can truly say that what you have achieved with it here makes this my very favorite version hands down. And I love how the video shows off all the parts of your actual performances, including Mona on the drums (yea!) and Lisa’s moving guitar solo. This video is just gorgeous beyond words. Thank you so much.

  26. I absolutely love everything about this video! First off I never heard this song before, so it’s like hearing a brand new MLT original for me, and it is such an elegant song, wow! Your harmonies are so sweet, and man love those round rich intricate guitar sounds from Lisa’s fingers gently serenading your vocals. And what a treat to see Mona on the drums with the full kit, and Lisa’s guitar playing below in the same frame!

Just absolute musical finesse demonstrated by you both here with this song and video! I am sure Steve is smiling down with joy where ever he is! 🙂

The quality and depth with which you present your newest musical creation for us is always worth the wait because you overwhelm us each time with such beautiful and elegant music. What did they say about Beethoven? He didn’t mass produce songs every week, but when he did create one in his own pace, each one was stunning and monumental, just like what you do. Thank you so much for the joy!

BTW, I notice the guitars used here are your “special” Baby Mine guitars, and Lisa you put that pick guard back on your Gretsch Duo Jet, just like you had it in the early days, niiice! That guitar always looks cool in any configuration really!

      1. Thanks Tomas for pointing that out. 🙂 Upon closer look I see that little stylish vent of the Chet Atkins Tennessean. In the video the guitar looked black and white like her Duo Jet. I feel silly!

  27. I suggested about a year ago that you do this song. And, you did it wonderfully. Loved your harmonies, and the depth they created. I love this tune. It is such a wonderful song that dances along a bevy of augmented and suspended chords. You guys are truly talented. Thank You.

    1. The bevy of augmented and suspended chords – I love that! And to think George figured all that out in (or before) ‘62 (they performed that song during their Decca auditions). They were just dipping their toes into writing themselves! They were much further ahead than they led on, it’s remarkable ! 😉 Also, thanks a lot!

  28. Til There Was You is my favorite Beatles song that was not written by them. Once again, MLT did a superb cover. I was in a high school production of The Music Man and always enjoyed the song, but appreciated it more when I heard the Fab Four do it.
These girls do every song in a classy, skillful manner. I am a singer/guitarist as well. Seeing this has inspired me to learn this song next. The guitar solo that George (and now Lisa) do is beautiful. I hope I can learn it. You twins challenge me to perfection with my music.

  29. As a resident of the BTCSH (Biggest Tram City of the Southern Hemisphere) I wish you were riding on our trams singing your stuff! Alas, it is not to be. Also alas, this will probably be my last post in the MLT Club as I am here as one of the lucky winners of the free month, and being a humble student with limited disposable income I am unable to become a paid-up member. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and one day, when school is way behind me, I will be back. Big thank you to Steve for supporting Mona and Lisa, which in turn came back as music for us to enjoy – we owe you a debt of gratitude, you will not be forgotten.

  30. A very wonderful song that has now become a beautiful song for the very first time. This enhancement with Mona & Lisa sounding lovely. The video and editing is very well done. 2/21 will definitely be a share day to my friends.

  31. Lovely! My wife and I did a duet of this at our wedding! (Small wedding, everyone was required to put on a performance.) I didn’t play when we did this, but I did play the encore of “I Will”.

    1. That’s the perfect song for a wedding! “I Will” was our Dad Rudi and Michaela’s wedding song, too! They are both great choices and such amazing love songs.

  32. Beautiful rendition of a Beautiful song and a lovely tribute as well. This song has always been a favorite of mine from the first time I heard it. First time was Shirley Jones from The movie The Music Man and then the Beatles from the American album Meet The Beatles. I also got to hear Paul sing it live when I saw him in concert.

  33. Just lovely again ladies. And thanks to Steve for providing the inspiration. So nice to see Blondie (with her new shaggy white hairstyle), on the skins and Lisa’s excellent guitar picking on lead. Oh to be sharing the same tram as you on the way back from school! ?❤️

  34. Beautiful rendition and performance! It was really cool to see Mona on the drums. Lisa, you would have made George very proud of that break. Impressive!
“Happy Valentines” Day to you both. ??

  35. The Music Man was the first film I remember being taken to see at the cinema – I must have been about 4! Then my cousin played me Til There Was You on her new Please Please Me album a year later. No going back after that.

  36. I have a bit of an affinity for this song; when I was little my older sister fell in love with “The Music Man” for which this song was written, and to this day she pretty much has the whole film memorized. This was a pretty song then, but this cover is butterflies-in-the-stomach gorgeous. Incredibly well done, and a smart video to go along. Thank you, M&L!

  37. I really enjoyed that! When I first heard the Beatles, this was one of the songs I heard — on my Meet the Beatles album and, at age 8, I already knew the song from The Music Man. Of all of George’s guitar solos and fills, that one, to my ear, is just perfect, and it is certainly one of my most favorite. Lisa plays it beautifully. I also especially love Mona’s harmonies here, singing below Lisa’s melody line, and giving us added depth that the Beatles do not. It has always sounded to me that Ringo plays bongos throughout on this song, and Mona here provides those beats, while also adding a bit more, on drums. Thank you, Mona and Lisa, for another great Beatles cover!

    1. Thank you Carol, it’s lovely to hear from you!
You are right, Ringo does play Bongos on the studio recording for that song and he emulated them with this cool, somewhat unusual drum beat when they performed the song live. To me it’s a classic Ringo thing – most people wouldn’t think to play the drums that way but they fit the song perfectly – just like George’s solo on the track!

      1. Thanks, Mona. I had forgotten the live versions and had fun looking at them on YouTube just now. Seeing/hearing Ringo play there (as best we can with those old videos), it’s very cool to see what you say, Ringo doing what he did so amazingly well, playing drums that fit the song, and in this case, playing and adding a bit to the beats he had done on bongos in the studio. Many thanks again to you and Lisa!

  38. Happy Valentines Day Mona & Lisa❤️ Till There Was You” is a song written by Meredith Willson for his musical play The Music Man (1957). In 1963 The Beatles did cover this song and made it unique in their own way using acoustic guitars, a bass guitar and bongo’s.

  39. Eric Clapton has been my guitar hero all my life. From today, after seeing you playing this wonderful cover, I have no doubt that Lisa is also a guitar hero, and one of the best. Actually, I think that for a long time, but today that I’ve seen her doing this solo in such a subtle way, and so perfect in the search for resemblance to George’s solo, I have no alternative but to bow to her majesty Lisa, my other guitar hero. I wonder if I would be crazy to want to see you together with him (Eric Clapton) sharing a video clip or a moment in a show. Fortunately the dream is not over.

  40. What an amazing and beautiful job and an wonderful tribute to Steve from Miami. I’m sure he is at peace and joyful with this lovely version.
Fit for the Queen! And you girls are much cuter than Paul…
Thank you Mona and Lisa! And Happy Valentine’s Day!

  41. Beautiful, Been busy of late but glad your email prompted me to watch this – superb and a fitting tribute to Steve. God Bless.

  42. Thank you for the early share ! Beautiful song and beautiful arrangement that nails it perfectly for the two songbirds !! I also absokute love the technical arrangements and “choreography” that builds the video and presents the simple but heartfelt melody ! You have a superb team of technical experts who may not be on screen, but enable the perfect display ! It’s even a pleasure to watch with the sound turned down ! Cinematically wonderful !! Congratulations ! Also … love the Gretsch !!

  43. ? We too, owe a huge debt of gratitude to Steve, formerly from Miami, now Steve from Heaven.
You’ve done beautiful, beautiful, things with his gifts, which are multiplied into gifts for us.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  44. Wow!!! didn’t know what I was missing . . . ‘Till there was you.
It was wonderful to see Mona on the drums again. I always thought it was where she seems to have the most fun.
Special Valentine’s Day greeting to the two of you.
    Thanks for sharing with us.

  45. Absolutely Beautiful, and a wonderful tribute to your friend. Having been in musical theater in my younger days, this song has been both my “Music Man” and ” Beatles” favorites. My understanding is that Paul did this cover since it was one of his fathers favorite songs. As a side note, there is a revival of Music Man on Broadway, scheduled to open in October 2020 with Sutton Foster, and Hugh Jackman. I will definitely be going to see it. Well done ladies. I love your rendition.

  46. I wouldn’t release it before next Friday either.
OMG! Ladies this is Breathtakingly Beautiful!
    Wow!
Lisa you got Georges part right on the nose.
Lisa what is the Little plaque on your Gretsch Say? (On the top by where you adjust the Strings)
Glad to see the pick guard back on.
Mona,! You made a dream come true, to see you playing drums on a song for most of it. Astounding! I came out of my chair and cried tears of joy.
So glad you picked this song and dedicated it to Steve’s Memory. I hope you sent it to his family.
Thanks Ladies for a special Valentines!?❤

  47. This is an example of what makes MLT simply the best. They add harmony to a great song that you never suspected was in need of it, and then when you go back and listen to the Beatles’ version you find it now sounds like it’s lacking a little something.
