Good Morning Starshine (Audio) – Early Access

If you are talking Hippie / American 60’s / Flower Power music the song “Good Morning Starshine” is bound to come up. Originally part of the soundtrack for the musical Hair and later a huge success for the singer Oliver, it has become somewhat synonymous with the peace & love movement of the 60’s.

One of our MLT Club members (we’ll leave it up to him if he wants to identify himself in the comments) reached out to us a few months ago and asked if he could sponsor this recording. We’ve always wanted to record a “Hair” song, so when we found a little gap in our schedule, we decided to give it a go.

At the moment we unfortunately don’t have time to film a video but still wanted to share the music here in the Club …

LISTEN: Good Morning Starshine – Oliver Cover

I think we can all do with a little pick-me-up these days. The world’s gone Gliddy glub gloopy, nibby nabby noopy la, la, la, lo, lo …

Hope the song makes you smile today!

Stay groovy,
Mona & Lisa

  1. Love this version. Long time since I’ve heard it so really refreshing to rehear your wonderful rendition.

In the UK music like this is kept alive by DJs like Tony Blackburn who still (and I’ve been listening to him my entire life) at the age of 80 presents his Golden Hour on BBC Radio 2 (available digitally across the globe I believe).

  2. M & L, This is quite a different & interesting take on this song; I definitely dig it! Maybe someday you could do your own version of “Aquarius” and “Let the Sunshine In!”(?)
Think about it! — Bud J.

  3. Wow! You guys really pulled of an obscurity. What may have been a hit back in the 60’s is no longer heard in this day and age. The only people that probably remember are those of us in our 60’s and older. It’s refreshing to see younger folk reliving one of our finest times in history.

    Thank You!

  4. I saw the musical Hair in London and I loved this song. The cover that came out commercially wasn’t as good as the original in the play. However, having said that, I LOVED this version – better than the original! Thanks for this gem!

  5. Yeah, This takes me back. This cover is better than the original. Dig It!
What car is Mona driving? That looks like a ’68 Thunderbird with the suicide doors.
I had my first dance with Mary Jane in a ’68 T-Bird. And the Beat Goes On!

  6. Hello ladies, I must say you sound GREAT, GREAT, GREAT!!!!! Such a feel-good song, I keep listening to it. I wish you could make a video with it, but I realize with the number of instruments you would need would be hard, but even if you had a track with the backups and plug ins seeing you and hearing it on you tube would be fantastic and I truly believe would be a hit with people on You tube, please think about it!!!!!! Stay Groovy

  7. Ladies,
Will we be able to download this tune anytime soon? Been one of my favorites since it was released in the late sixties, and it reminds me of a happier time in my life living in California as a teenager!

    1. I also dig your version of Africa to the maxx! and Would be very proud to be able to download this masterpiece from y’all as well Please?

  8. I’ve never heard this song before, but it’s a blast of pure joy! I know it’s a cover (a wonderful cover!) but still I hope it finds its way onto the new album!

  9. wow!! I haven’t heard or thought of this song for many, many years! What a treat to hear your beautiful harmonizing voices performing this song! Brings back memories of childhood.

  10. Loved this song when done by Oliver. What a wonderful take on the song this is. Really outdid yourselves on the amazing harmony.

  11. Saw “Hair” in New York in 1969! I was 16 years old, living outside Hartford, Connecticut. New York was not as cleaned up as it is today. I’d love to see you doing a video of this some day. Such a happy song!

  13. How did I miss this song. I’m hearing a 3rd voice? The conga’s really added a lot and so did the harmonica!!! The Harmonies are so good but what makes it special is listening through headphones and turning up the volume. I hadn’t thought of Oliver in years, I’ve just listened, probably 15 times!!! It makes me want to go Island hopping or even Rio. You did brighten my day, so Groovy, Thank you!!!!!!!

  14. Ha takes me back. Saw ‘Hair’ in London back in the day! Great show – lovely to hear this track again – great version too! Thanks ladies!

  15. Great version from my all time favourite musical, you have captured the wonderful happiness that there was at the time. This song always brightens my darkest days, thank you

  16. Just listened to Starshine. I was 11 years old in 1969. Sang to Oliver all the time, eventhough I cannot sing. This song would get into my head and replay. Thank you for the beautiful updated version of this with all those layers! This is why I try to support with my meager means. You always keep me centered when I’m stressed. Peace. Stay safe. Stay Groovy ????❤

  17. Saw the production of HAIR in London Sept 1970 (forget the theatre) – have the RtoR tape – you kids scored a HAT TRICK on this one

    1. It would have been the Shaftesbury Theatre, it played there from 1968 to 1973, i think it moved then as the roof of the theatre collapsed. I saw it there about the same time as you and few times since. Happy memories, or should that be “Hippie” memories. Take care

      1. Hello Paul – thanks for the info – I Googled it after I posted it – no I was far from being a hippie in those days- was on leave from the US Army in West Germany – stay safe

      2. I wasn’t a Hippie either, but I don’t think you needed to be to enjoy the music. Glad you made it, stay safe too

      3. I still remember the guy outside the theatre asking if I wanted to see “air” – told him I couldn’t see “air” until I saw the sign – HAIR – it’s said with an H then i said – speak English will ya – we laffed – didn’t know the roof collapsed – the one I remember is the Ivanhoe Hotel burning down later on in ’71 after I got back to this side of the pond – stayed up the street from it in a B&B

  18. What a fun cover of that classic! I love how you annunciate the lyrics, especially the nonsensical ones! Such beautiful, complex instrumentation throughout, too! And is Mona driving a left-hand drive mid 60’s Lincoln or is the picture reversed? I can’t quite tell if her beauty mark is on this side or not. Great peppy song for any time of day, but I’m going to bed now, playing it over in my head and humming along!

    1. the car is at ’66 to ’68, and those years the antenna was on the drivers side, sooooo looks like Mona is driving, picture isnt reveresed.

  19. Hi ladies, love your music. The Live at the Cavern Club albums are great travelling music.

As a Canadian just saying that there was some excellent Canadian groups during the 70’s and kind of the 80’s that had great harmonizing vocals. Might be good potential material for future albums, plus non Canadians might not be familiar with the songs.

  20. I have just joined the MLT Club and now I’m so glad I did! I remember when this song first appeared on the airwaves… and its thrilling to hear such a clear, well-layered version, and words I can actually decifer! Love it!!!

  21. I saw the musical Hair years ago. Awesome that you recorded this song. The vocals are amazing. I really like your spin on in. Any chance this will appear on a future album?

  22. It’s been a long time since I heard this song. You did an amazing job. I need to make this my “Wake Up” tune.

  23. Can’t remember if I already commented or not, but just listening again.
Vocals are amazing. How many takes did you do! Sounds like a chorus. Wow. Harmonica is fantastic, Mona!
Love your cover of this cheerful song.

  24. The vocals and harmonies are so beautifully layered that this wonderful song made me smile big time (To use one of your expressions). Oh my goodness! Hard to imagine how a song can be so incredibly improved upon, but you did it once again! Your music and this song simply brings great joy. As always, “Thanks for the Memories.”

  25. Absolutely incredible! You’ve taken a song I liked fine and sang along with growing up. (I defy anyone to no sing along with scooby ooby da da parts!) But you have infused it with such JOY, I now love the song. Can’t wait for the next gem from you..

  26. Wow! You two have transformed this song into a whole new listening experience. I never cared much for this song, I thought it was a little bland, middle of the road elevator music but I love this version. As usual you have put your own spin on it and done a brilliant job!

  27. Every song has that way it wishes it could be done if it could only communicate that to an artist. Usually if the writer(s) record it themselves, because they are so intimate with it, they come fairly close. But for this song, this is it. The perfect interpretation and rendition that the song has been longing for all this time and has finally found thanks to you. Congrats.

  28. A number of people recognized that the car in this picture is a 60’s Lincoln Continental. But then I realized that I’ve seen a picture of Mona and Lisa in an old Cadillac with fins. I was wondering if everyone would know right were to find such an image?

  29. First time I am hearing this version and it is simply beautiful Ladies! Thank you so much and question for you both, certain songs can really elevate you to another level, or makes you feel so good singing it , during it and when you done, so did you both have that same feeling. I ask because I felt so good after hearing this, WOW !

  30. I’d be happy to share a bit of “insider info” about this tune. I have two daughters, and now both of them have an MLT commission dedicated to them. This one celebrates my 3.5 year old grandson, Oliver. The original hit was by the singer Oliver. When the idea of the song first came up, I was skeptical. It’s so goofy. And yet… the more I re-listened, the more it made sense. It was hard not to smile.
The other concern was Team MLT. Would they be willing to do it. If they were willing, would it be something they found joy in, or would it be just another job? I really hoped it would be something they would really sink their chops into, as I’ve witnessed time-after-time. Because I’ve had a connection with TeamMLT and a very cordial relationship over many years, I worried that I could strain that by trying to pressure them into doing something, that, for whatever reason, they didn’t want to do. I was prepared to hear that they declined. I had visions of “Abba rants” going on at MLT world headquarters. But, no. I first heard the recording on my smartphone speaker while I huddled in a corner of a museum gallery, in New Zealand, the day before Christmas. As soon as I heard Mona come in on the harp, I knew they were on it. My daughter was thrilled with her commission. I believe that not all music is free. Sometimes you pass the hat. As much as the money, its a way of showing respect and appreciation. I know that Mona and Lisa have said that the songs they perform are all special to them and so I’m really touched that a song that is special to my daughter and me, is now special to them too. “Wowcool” as we say.

  31. When there’s no video I try to figure out which one is singing lead…the difference in your voices is so subtle that you really have to listen…even though Lisa most of the time does the lead I’m thinking this one is Mona….right or wrong ?….oh and btw it was a superb performance…you two are just fabulous !!

    1. Thanks Rick!
Yes, It’s me singing lead on this one. We layered a whole ton of vocals though, doubled nearly all voices and added so many “ahhhs” that in total Lisa is probably singing just as much as me on this recording 🙂
We really let ourselves go with the amount of harmonies on this one! 😉

  32. Honestly, this is my wife’s favorite song. When I told her you had a new one, she was interested, as always. When she heard the first few notes, she lit up like a winter’s bonfire and started squealing, clapping, and singing along. You made one more of your fans extremely happy.

  33. Well… here it is: I was never a huge fan of Oliver’s version of this. That said, this is absolutely WONDERFUL!!! Such joy in your voices, such amazing harmonies, such incredible music in your instruments, Such LOVE… It couldn’t be more perfect!!! Is going to be on the new album? God I hope so… cause I’ll listen to this over and over!!!

    1. Yeeeah, thanks! It isn’t going to end up on the next MLT original album but might make it on another compilation CD later down the line …

  34. May I be honest! For the first time your song didn’t take me back to the 60s, maybe to a Brazilian or Caribbean beach, well it’s good. It seems that you’ve used autotune or something electronic in the background vocals. It’s not what I expected, but it’s a good version.

  35. Really .. it’s impossible not to fell happy hearing you sing this..dear girls I think that your mission is to spread happiness with your music and you do it very very well.. thanks .. I loved.. and you’re great in the pic.

  36. I have to admit that I had no recollection of the song. Before listening to it, I went online to listen to the Hair and the Oliver versions to have the proper perspective when listening to he MLT version for the first time. There were some vague recollections since my grandparents had the Hair album. I’ve heard of Oliver, but never really remember his songs.
This shows once again the power of MLT. This recording blows the other two out of the water. Personally, you have turned a good song into a spectacular one. All that you’ve done works so well, with so many subtleties and so much “coloring” it’s mind blowing, once again. Puts Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound” to shame.
Heard it this morning over breakfast, and it’s like the day is playing a commercial on how good it’s going to be. Truly awesome. ??
Is this a trend: Starman, Sunshine Superman, Good Morning Starshine …?

  37. One of my favorite songs to hear pop up on radio in my youth. Love the arrangement. Money well spent for the sponsor like mine was with Baby Mine. Sing, sing, sing those songs Mona and Lisa.

  38. First, thanks to the sponsor, your generosity is very much appreciated! Another memory catalyst, my boyhood friend from a previous post got the “Hair” Broadway soundtrack when it was released. MLT has done it again, thanks to the Team for the constant high quality from concept to master. A pick-me-up is putting it mildly! Hey, is that a ’67 Lincoln Continental?

  39. I definitely remember that song from Oliver and singing along with it…fond memories from that era being brought back to life by the MonaLisa Twins

  40. I admit it with both hands raised high….Drive My Car was the first song I heard from you….I was watching on YouTube some George Harrison videos when all of a sudden there was that promo clip of Beatles and More vol 1…so I let it play and then the algorithm played Drive My Car…I was hooked….!!!

  41. Wow! What a wonderful way to start the day. Another ray of sunshine from the MLT to drive the blues away! ?❤️

  42. Totally unexpected cover. Some of the lyrics are nonsense, But, the song is such a happy song that one cannot help liking it. You two did a great job with the song both vocally and on the guitar……the rhythm part is not all that easy. Also, it is such a fun song to sing.

  43. Wow, what a pick me up, your bright harmonies just carry me away. So delightful, harmony bliss, and wonderful guitar riffs, like a Spanish classical guitar, love it! Captures the feel of sun and summer so perfectly. Nice convertible with the wind and sun blowing and shining through your hairs! 🙂

  44. Wow, great arrangement!!! Love the calypso style with harmonica and of course great vocals and lead and rhythm guitar work. A lot of fun which we all need today.

  45. You ladies always know how to Bring the Sunshine. A song from you always makes the day Brighter! Thank you!

  46. Absolutely Fabulous !!!!!!!!!!!!! beautiful harmonies, wonderful guitars, atmospheric backing, and an expert at the mixing desk – if you did that on the Voice you would get 4 turns instantly !!!!! and with a Harmonica in the mix as well – love you for that – please do more like this – ps you have my email let me know a cost for a similar project – very very interested in hearing you do a particular track i have in mind.

    love & best wishes

still waiting for your UK Live appearance opportunity ? Soon I hope ?

  47. I loved this so much I’m almost speechless. A truly incredible, eclectic production, not to mention the masterful performance of all the myriad parts. One would think you had the entire cast of the original Broadway show performing -but much better because it’s so “tight” and “clean” and each instrument and voice is fresh and crisp. Your original arrangement is exhilarating and such fun! I think you could compose, perform and produce your own autobiographical musical one day and I hope you do. What the world needs now is MLT.

  48. Very happy version – love the harmonies as always! Beautiful guitar work and rhythms…thanks for the nice energy boost for the day – loved the harmonica Mona!

  49. I’d almost forgotten about this tune, glad you revived it. Fabulous interpretation and just what the world needs now!

  50. Just a beautiful job, ladies! I am one of the Flower Power Hippies that also is a Vietnam Era veteran, so this song has ALWAYS meant a lot to me. Big hugs and lots of love to YOU, the entire family and everyone who contributed to this great cut!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  51. When the play of Oliver came out in 1967 I was 17 years old and 19 years old when the song was a hit in the USA. I have heard this song covered many time since. MLT have created the freshest, upbeat With beautiful blending vocals along with runs and hooks that make this version as if it was the very first time original. In short, just awesome.

  52. This is Fantastic! Wow! All the different directions. This sounds better than the Original. You outdid yourselves Ladies!.
Sounds like Mona Singing lead. Certainly her blues harp!
Im in love with this Version!
BTW, I know who the Mystery Clubber is that requested the song. Not for me to say though.

  53. Wow, interesting…I’m so happy…When you issued “Good day sunshine” few months ago, Iwrote you a comment and by the way suggested this song “Good morning starshine”. Looks like I wasn’t the only one who thought about it…
It fits so good to your style and voices..Great performance!

  54. Excellent as always! European maids – hard to ignore. Easy to adore. What a way to start the day. MLT joy goes a long way. Thank you so much for the beauty you share with the world. Don’t ever under estimate what a difference you make.

  55. OMG… You ‘ve done one of my all time faves as a kid that I’ d hear on the radio and would sing along too, Absolutely love this…The Bluesharp/harmonica and vocals and the arrangement all interweave Groovy Perfectly…. Whoa, whomever offered to sponsored this for you to do, Thankyou, made me smile, thinking back to childhood radio tunes I adored and loved singing along to…. Made my day, Smiles achieved,… The effects of MLTBuzzing and Sunshine… Undeniable?☀️??☮️

  56. I’m tripping! Such fun to listen to! Was that Mona on the harp or did you rope your pal John Sebastian in for it? Stay nibby nabby nopy!
