I Bought Myself A Politician – Behind the Scenes

A look behind the scenes …

Considering that it took us less than two weeks to film, cut and release the music video for “I Bought Myself a Politician” it felt like we’ve been working on this behind-the-scenes video for ages 😉 But here it is … the best 18 minutes out of hours upon hours of footage.

We’ve already shown you the “demo video” we had prepared going into the video shoot that helped get us get all the scenes done and dusted in just 3 days.

Together with lots of planning, Michaela’s organisation and everyone’s teamwork, we feel like we got the most out of the time we spent at the beautiful Eriviat Hall. We also shot a Q&A video during a short break there, that we posted to the Club a few weeks ago.

We hope you enjoy coming along for the shoot, and we thank you all for watching and sharing the original music video so much. Most people on our YouTube channel have found us through our covers, so to see one of our own songs do so well on that platform means the world to us.

Stay groovy,

Mona & Lisa

  1. It is very interesting to see how the video was made, Mona I like all the different costumes that you wear, it was hard work to shoot this video and all the mouvements that Mona &Lisa have to learn and you have made it. BRAVO.

  2. I love to see your family work together. You make hard work look like fun. It’s amazing to see what is behind a music video. Your work ethic is incredible. I am glad to be a small part of supporting it.

  3. Hi Mona & Lisa, just to say – and I bet everyone on here would say the same – there is no need to ‘buy me too’; I am yours always, gratis. Stay Safe & stay groovy. Andy

  4. Congratulations for the great effort you make, it is surprising to see how the four of them give shape to this video in no time.

    Best regards

  5. What an awesome video, I love seeing the behind the scenes and how much work goes into it. The whole family works like a well oiled machine, everything perfectly calculated and executed. Bravo!
So it was Michaela behind the mask!

  6. The more I hear this tune and lyrics, the more I appreciate it. It is catchy, has meaning, and has many different layers. Every time I listen to it, I hear new subjects, lyrics, and the nuances of your voices.

Being able to see behind the scenes is a bonus that I did not expect. It is interesting to see the work and planning of all who participated in making the final product.

  7. Hello ladies, thanks for looking behind the scenes. It was very interesting watching you at your work. It looked like you have had a lot of fun, you’ve got real talent.,- see you later.

  8. Hiya, to you four, I spent years working on ‘The Clothes Show’ for the BBC doing fashion shoots in old houses. One we did West of London I was waiting and started talking to this lady in costume, I thought she was a guide for the house as some such places the staff do dress up. Anyway later I was talking to the boss lady of the house and mentioned I only saw one in costume, she almost fainted, no one dresses up, the lady I talked to was a ghost!!! She called another guide over and asked her to describe the ghost, it was the same lady!
    Stay safe and groovy, Steve…

  9. Hi Mona & Lisa, Aah.. I was just typing away when my laptop completely dropped me out, so I’ll start again! As I was saying, I loved this film, because it shows how different and special you both are – for example can you even imagine the so-called “Supergroups” even bothering to produce a Behind The Scenes video like this. Also, I liked that Lisa isn’t above even doing her own microwave cooking at one point – any other self-[dis]respecting pop singer would have employed a flunky {or 100} to do it for him, or her. As everyone else has said, congrats to you both, as well as Rudi & Michaela. Can’t wait for the new Album to come out. Stay healthy & Stay Groovy. Andy.

    1. Having worked with BobDylan and quite a few others we had a catering firm, with cordon blue chefs do the cooking, for everyone, same food, we had no time to nuke deserts, far too busy…Steve…

  10. Hi Mona, Hi Lisa… I loved this behind-the-scenes video… the final product was wonderful and now we can understand why. The four of you work with dedication, organization, talent and a lot of joy..thank you so much for showing us all the details., it’s good to see Michaela and Rudi in action, the four of you are an extremely capable team. Mona was amazing and graceful playing so many characters, and Lisa perfectly played a tycoon., a beautiful and charming tycoon..and the orange socks made Lisa very cute.congratulations to everyone. another video I can’t stop watching. Lisa are you left-handed with your feet? Thanks for taking us together, MLT is the 4FAB these days. Stay groovy.

  11. Thank you for sharing this. It felt like I was there with you.
I was over the moon for adding a second Lisa for Nowhere Man, but 16 Monas is just cuteness overload. I am Catholic and Pope Mona is my favorite of all time, I hope she comes back in another video sometime.
Lisa, sometimes your eyes appear to be brown, sometimes they appear to have a hint of green in them. What color are they (gorgeous is not a color even though that is what I would call them)?
    You are Groovy!

  12. Also enjoyed seeing all the different camera gear and equipment, lights, trollies you use for your video production. Was especially groovy to see the Lumix there ???????? in the line up. Was cool to see that old fasioned Olympia film camera is an actual working unit with the flash. The best and grooviest behind the scenes I’ve ever seen. Thanks again! ????????❤

  13. WOW! That was a LOT of FUN! It was great seeing Rudi and Michaela as well! It looked like a lot of work but the end result was fantastic! Thanks for sharing all that behind the scenes footage! Love that kind of stuff!

  14. This was a fun video, and also showed more of the details of how involved the shooting of a single scene of a video can be. I enjoyed seeing more of “Producer Rudi” and “Behind the Scenes Michaela” at the work they do so well.

It appears trying to kick a globe is a bit harder than kicking a soccer ball. And that reminds me of my soccer story:

Soccer became popular for kids in the USA about the time my kids were starting school. The biggest problem was finding qualified coaches – most of the adults had never played soccer, myself included. I ended up having to volunteer to be an assistant coach in order for my son to play. We, the coaches, tried to learn everything about the game from books; we weren’t that successful. One day our star forward had a visit from his father, a musician in an English band. We talked him into giving us a short soccer symposium and learned more about soccer in an hour that we had from our reading. With the current social media boom, I was able to research who it was today. I’m almost positive it was Mick Box of Uriah Heep. We had failed to realize that we had a famous rocker in our midst. We didn’t ask him for an autograph, ask him out for a beer, or anything. He had just been a guy from England who knew way more about soccer than we did.

  15. I want that cap that Mona the Photographer on the stairs was wearing! Seriously, though, great work ladies (and gentleman!), and a fantastic video for a fantastic song! Keep up the great work! I hope to enjoy many, many more years of your wonderful artistry!

  16. OMG Thank you so much for sharing with us. The best part is ? Only 4 people involved to make this video, how cool is that? Usually there are a ton of people on a project and this proved no need for a ton of people to make a successful video. You can see how the love and support of all 4 of you that makes this work. So happy to be a part of this groovy club and so thankful that you share with us as much as you do. There are no other groups that do this for their fans, you all are in a class all by yourself and the bar is raised to that no one can catch you. Please keep it coming and we all love you

  17. Not sure Lisa will be receiving many offer from Liverpool or Everton FC – but then they fluff their shots too!
Really enjoyed this behind the scenes video. So funny and so interesting to see what took place to make your super smooth finished video. All that hard work and late nights – absolutely exhausting. Hope you will treat us to another one when you have all recovered.

  18. A great behind the scenes video showing all the hard work that went into making this video well done ☺️ I love it congratulations on reaching 100.0000 views on you tube for the I bought myself a politician

  19. That was very cool! Truly an amazing ,talented and entertaining family. The Fab Four! Thank you for sharing

  20. Whoa, thoroughly enjoyed watching this, wow, just floored at all what goes into creating the video, the takes, equipment, costuming, etc. The Teamwork comes shining through as it’s evident and kudos to Papa Rudi’s carpentry skills and resourcefulness with that homemade
dolly camera trolley, Michaela for all the wardrobe, misc stuff that she was in charge of doing, finally for the input from Mona and Lisa to help make it all happen….Kudos Team MLT, most impressive, Thankyou for the opportunity in/for allowing us all to join in alongside of BTS to see and be educated/learn what all is required , in making a video. ????????

  21. TGIF
This feels like the magician is revealing how he does his magic. It’s fantastic. Your family work ethic is awesome. Always smiling. It’s so nice that you share these moments of time with us. You are like a Rock & Roll dream come true, and we get to follow the that dream in real time. Super kool!

Behind the scenes with Rudi and Michaela is always kool. Wagner family videos are the best. This four piece band is capable of anything they put their minds to. I really love the opening shots of the cars driving up to the Eriviat Hall, drones?

I’m still not convinced you ever slept that weekend, although it did appear Lisa almost fell asleep while Rudi was setting up a shot.

    ‘Spoiler alert:
Mona, I did not get the “charge me” joke until I replayed it a couple of times. I thought Lisa meant charge like to make her pay to edit. Then I realized she meant like charge her with a crime. Those jokes are always funny, but then you turn the camera on and everyone flubs their lines.

    Live, laugh, love

    JP

    1. JP, I think that was the Sticky Toffee Pudding “sugar coma consciousness” in Lisa’s words. I agree Lisa, “life is good” when there is Sticky Toffee Pudding. Kudos to Michaela for that. 🙂

      1. She does seem to enjoy the pudding.????
I forgot to compliment Lisa on her classy dance moves. It’s so kool to see the family at work. Love and laughter all around.

        JP

  22. Oh my God, you guys are something else!!!! Are you producing a video for every song on the album? Kudos to all of you, I am so impressed about your work ethic. Plus your having a blast doing it!!! Way to go, I can’t wait for the album itself, it’s driving me nuts and that house is so cool, perfect set. Thank you for all you do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. How can this look like such hard work and yet so much fun at the same time? I think Robert B’s citation of Confucius’ axiom sums up your life’s chosen ventures perfectly. You all love what you do and love doing it together. And I certainly love being able to see you all doing it. It’s priceless. Thank you so much for letting us participate in your genius, merrymaking and horseplay!

  24. Very enjoyable to watch. A lot of work behind the scenes. The end result turned out great.
Really enjoy behind the scenes. Thanks for sharing to us.

  25. Since we’ve already had the opportunity to see the finished product, it was very entertaining to see what went into the making of the video. Ive often wondered when how the family communicates when the camera is not rolling. “German gibberish” is a perfect example! We know German is your native language, but since English has become such a huge part of your life, could you share what happens on a daily basis? As impressive as it is to see how much hard work goes into a video production, Im personally so appreciative to see what your personalities are like behind the scenes!! As Ive expressed before, having the access through the MLT Club is soooooo well worth it!! Thank you again for sharing your lives with us.

  26. Very entertaining! Still amazed you were able to film, edit and release this in less than a week. You must have been exhausted by the time you finished the edit. Super job!
Was really nice to see Michaela and Rudi.
It is an honour and privilege to be in the grooviest club on the grooviest place on the internet. THANK YOU for all you do! It really does make a difference. 🙂

  27. This video certainly demonstrates the amount of work that goes into getting a 3 minute video ready for showing. Unless one has taken part in this kind of “chaos”, they have no idea of the complexity of the project. This was certainly a fantastic song and video. An MLT professional collaboration all the way.

  28. It’s remarkable that in three days you were able to get that much work done, and have that good a time doing it; I’m reminded of my production projects in school about a million years ago. What a fun time you’re having! Your message at the end, thanking us members, is something many artists neglect, but it reminds of something I’ve mentioned before: for thirteen bucks, American, I can’t help feeling I’m scamming you somehow! Best value on the net!

  29. That was delightful. What an effort!! As I watched this I was reminded of an old saying. I always thought comedy legend George Burns coined it. But apparently it was the philosopher Confucius (a few centuries earlier) who said it first. “Choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.”

  30. Brilliantly done! Having spent most of my life in the television business here in New York, I’ve worked on quite a few music videos as a gaffer and electrician. The fact that you were able to produce such a fantastic video with just the four of you speaks volumes to your talent. I was particularly impressed with your dad’s skateboard camera dolly for the table top shot – genius! Looking forward to the next one!

  31. Oh wow! What a super production team, and only 4 of you! A well oiled machine is an understatement. This was so fun and intriguing to watch to see you in your elements doing your genius magic. I don’t think a professional video production team of dozens could have done it as smoothly, efficiently, and ingeniously as team MLT! In the first scene of the video when Lisa walks in singing, it is so fascinating to see how you transformed such normal plain scene into the beautiful production, from black and white reality to cinematographic magic and sound. Like two different worlds.

After doing that choreography scene 17 times, those moves must have engrained permanently in Mona! 🙂 , and all those costumes and make up to change in and out of, and to look like perfection each time, kudos! Lisa was just so cool, scene after scene, like a true movie star pro! Was so fun to see the globe kicking practice, and the smoke scene. Seeing Lisa actually breathing the smoke in and out was so funny!

And Mona, a “double windsor knot” you learned just like that, I’m impressed! I’ve had to use ties off and on for 30 years of my career and I ended up settling with doing “half windsors” proficiently, the double was too tough! 🙂

Thanks so much for this behind the scene video, was so enjoyable, and you are all so amazing at your craft. 🙂

    1. Jung,
I’ve only ever used a “Double Windsor Knot” thats how I learned. I could use the “half Windsor ” but I’ve become so proficient with the Double that its second nature.
      Really enjoyed your comment

      1. Thanks Rick! Yeah the Double Windsor knot is the more elegant and proper tie knot indeed. I think my dad tried to teach me that one, but at 6AM every morning when I was half a sleep early in my career, the simplicity of the half Windsor won out unfortunately. 🙂 Mona sure looked like an honorable senior officer with the tie and uniform.

  32. Hello Ladies and Team MLT,
What a fun and interesting behind the scenes look. I could have watched all three days worth.
Never knew it took 3 people to get Lisa in the tub , and make sure she got clean lol ????
I would Guess Mona’s favorite character was the Pope. She seemed like she had so much freedom with the character.
Rudolf and Michaela were spot on as usual.
Michaela you were instrumental in getting all the 16 Mona’s and Lisa changed and in order too.
Rudolf, you camera magic is second to none. Thanks. Everyone
    Rick
PS Thank You So much for The Shout out Lisa and team MLT!!! So Sweet and made my Day! I was surprised they were still wrapped up????????????????????

  33. A superb job by all and well-done! I want to make a comment here, and I hope you don’t take this any way other than I intended. In this “making of” video, I see a lot more of Michaela than ever before. Paraphrasing Fountains of Wayne, Mona & Lisa’s mom has got it going on! 🙂

  34. God forbid, but if you guys ever decided to leave the music, you would be excellent cinematographers or even directors. You guys (team MLT) always put out a product that is as exceptional as it is entertaining. And it’s a privilege to see how you come up with it. By the way, are some of background songs your own stuff? I’ve never heard them before. You guys are the best. Luv ya 2 times. Peace be.

  35. What a privilege we’re treated to when we see behind the scenes! A truly monumental undertaking accomplished with the utmost efficiency by the four hardest-working humans in the ????! So touching to see how much you all put into this, and how instinctually you all work together. Rudolf’s camera trolley is awesome, and worthy of sacrificing your in-line wheels! I hope the old Olympus gives you some great pics; groovy future prizes, indeed! I ???? Lisa’s modesty not revealing what she wore under the tub bubbles.(guessing maybe a bathing suit?) We knew going in that Mona worked her tush off with all the costume changes, but it looks like Michaela may deserve MVP honors as hardest-working Wagner during this project! You four are the best!

  36. Right before the video caption says fake money – i can tell it’s fake money.
    How?
Those bills are crisp and stuck together.
But they are older “Benjamins” which have not been printer for a number of years but are still in circulation.
    Nice job

  37. Absolutely the best 18 minutes of my day!!
Love these behind the scenes videos, and photos you share with us.I have shared the video with countless family and friends(and they all LOVE it).
Still amazed how the 4 of you pulled this off in 3 days.
Thanks for Always Brightening Up our Fridays!!
Can’t wait to see and hear what you have in store for us.

Love & Hugs to Team MLT
