Demo Video of “I Bought Myself A Politician” – Behind The Scenes

You were never meant to see this …

What we are posting today was never supposed to see the light of day. However, after watching it back earlier this week (now, that the music video is finished) we laughed so hard that we thought it might be worth sharing. So here it is! 🙂

For bigger video productions like “I Bought Myself A Politician” we usually do a lot of planning in advance. It started off with a written storyboard, a list of possible side characters and their outfits, and some characteristics we would like the filming location to have.

A bit further along the planning phase we sometimes also like to make “mock-up” demo videos for our projects in order to get a rough idea of the timing of the cuts, the different locations and angles needed and the overall flow of a video. You might remember that we made a whole doll-version of our video for “Still A Friend Of Mine” before shooting the real deal. It saved time on the actual filming day and made the process much quicker.

Well, after having visited the set (Eriviat Hall) to get an idea of the place and take some photos and dummy videos, we had enough material to prepare another mock-up video with it. Lisa put together a super quick, rough version of the video to use as a guide on the shooting days.

We had no intention of releasing it but now, after seeing the finished video we thought it would give at least some of you a good laugh, too. We trust you with this horrendous demo video 😉

Enjoy …
Mona & Lisa

  1. You know, funny, I never thought that you’d have cut-outs in front of the green board for blocking. I just thought, you’d do it unscripted like weatherpeople do for newscasts. ????

  2. I loved seeing the story book ideas on how the making of this clever video came about. It gave me a smile and a few laughs. Love seeing the creative minds at work. Stay safe and stay Groovy! ❤

  3. You know what would be a great premium benefit you could offer someday after the pandemic is over? I know Gene Simmons (of KISS) offers a high ticket deal where he comes to your home and does the whole meet and greet thing. Of course it costs an arm and a leg but for hard core KISS fans I suppose it’s worth it. I’m not suggesting you do that but if people were willing to pay and come to where you are and be able to watch whenever you are doing some future project that would be cool. OK, it’s just a dream but you have to dream. I’d pay a grand to spend a day watching you film a video (luckily we can see it for free on the net…thank you Gods of the Internet)

  4. It’s really a treat to see this! I love how close the final video is to the original intent. This doesn’t happen easily, even for the multimillion dollar productions. The end scene still blows my mind. It takes a LOT preparation, let alone the costumes, but Mona has to be VERY precise where she stands and her movements for it to work, like it does. Let alone the tech gadgets and expert operation!
I was once part of a big budget Hollywood movie, where we attempted something a fraction of complicated than the “Monas on the stairs” ending scene, given it was in the 90’s, but we struggled all night to complete one short scene.
Hats off (Panama hats, that is) to this otherworldly crew. Funny, I had commented on the “Summer Rain” song about a Panama hat not knowing what was in the works. ????

  5. I love the video and it’s great to see the mock-up! They’re both a lot of fun to watch. You are all wonderfully creative.

  6. Thanks for sharing the Behind the Scenes look at another Fantastic video(as usual).
What is more amazing,is that it was only the 4 of you involved in shooting it.
Loved all the characters, especially the Pope rocking it out on the Rickenbacker Bass.
You girls are too good to all of us. ???? ????

Love to all at Team MLT

  7. It was very interesting to get a bit more of a view into how you set up a video shoot, especially how Lisa’s demo video was used as a template for the final version.

The YouTube views-per-day numbers look pretty good. It looks like all that hard work has paid off – congratulations!

  8. The demo video is so fascinating to see, thanks for posting it. That striped suit Lisa is wearing looks like the outfit to wear in the end when going to jail! LOL, and seeing the scene at the stair well, it’s amazing just how many different outfits Mona wore for that scene, and made it look so good and giving each character, real character. ! Love seeing Lisa dancing in the shower of bills flying around. And I have to say in some shots, I’m not sure if it’s Mona or Lisa there. In MonaLisa Twins, sometimes the “twins” part stand out.
It’s really nice to be able to see this demo video and the process you went through to come up with all ideas for the video. You are pros indeed, the best in the industry, and all this magnificent video production pulled off by just the 4 of you, ingenious!

And so awesome to hear the video on youtube is doing so well. May it reach multitudes of souls all over the world many times over!

  9. Thanks for trusting us with this fantastic demo. It’s always interesting to see how your initial ideas develop into the finished product. This one is truly amazing.

Thanks for the Picture in Picture. It is like a continuous before and after picture, but you both look thinner in the before picture.????

I like Rudi’s cameo appearance. His air drumming was right on cue.

  10. I am one who goes to “how we did it’ videos to see what went into the video or movie and also to see how creative types handle problems. on o ccassion I have smacked my forehead saying “why didnt I think of that”. in this video I love how Rudi got all the extra Mona’s in their places, all over the stair case for example. Besides its a fun song and fun video

  11. Thank you for the behind-the-scenes video. It makes me appreciate the final product so much more. Plus, it is fun to watch. It was not horrendous by any means. It can be fun watching how the sausage is made. I actually like that.

Both of you should be extremely proud of how it all turned out. It does not detract from the finished product in any manner.

A few weekends back, I somehow tweaked YouTube’s algorithms and AI to serve up only your “originals” on my Roku to my better TV. I had watched many of your originals before, but it was a treat watching just those. The tunes were great, the lyrics, and the videos. Which one did I like the best? There are too many to choose from.

  12. I love it. Sorry, but didn’t make me laugh, I thought it was cool to see how you work to plan things out. Thanks for sharing! By the way, I am not a Politician, but I am for sale. And very cheap! ????????❤????????

  13. Love the demo and the description of the work behind making the final video. Your work is always professionally done.

The song ‘I bought a politician’ is spot on with the present situation here in the US. They don’t seem to be working for the citizens anyway. The lyrics and melody along with both of your voices and harmonies make this song a real hit. Can’t wait till the new album is released!

    Stay groovy…

  14. Mona and Lisa, how cool is this? Wow thank you so much, you really made my Friday Afternoon! Was having a bla day but after watching this? It made me laugh and realize how enjoyable you both are. Your down to earth humor is brilliant and this video captured the spirt of having a good time and not taking life to serious! Cant wait to show my little Maddie when she gets home from school today. I thank god each day I found you both and so happy to be a part of this wonderful and groovy club. I am still a little teary eyed over the loss of Charlie Watts, but focusing on how great his drumming was and will live for ever and this video made me feel good and love the Mona Lisa Club so much more. So glad to know that there are two wonderful ladies in this crazy world we live in that makes it all worth while. Please keep the positive vibes coming across the pond to us here in the USA. Have a great weekend with love from

  15. Well, my poor bladder…got a great workout watching, and made my Friday, and a great kickoff to the Holiday Wknd. ( Labour Day Wknd )…. I loved it all, Lisa ‘s fab creative notions at creating hilarious improvisation , such a skill, so glad you decided to share the mockery mayhem… A great stress reliever…. The Creativity River Just Keeps on Flowing…????????

  16. Imagine if MLT had released this demo video first, and it was our job to guess what the final video would look like. How in the world would we have interpreted the spinning Mona?

  17. Lol! I can’t stop laughing!! ???????????????? What a truly enjoyable look at the making of this Wonderful Video. I can see why you were hesitant about releasing, but so glad you did.
Putting both together made sense of the mock up too. Loved seeing Papa Rudi in the 360 part of the mock up.
Thanks Team MLT for so many laughs today.
    Best and much success
    Rick
P S I’ve seen something that has caused me to return to the original to check out. ????????????

  18. Very fun to see the many faces behind the scenes. I enjoyed it even more than the Barbie doll version of Still a Friend of Mine. Your imaginations are amazing as always… thanks for the sneak peek!

  19. THANK YOU, THANK YOU! That was awesome! So cool to see a bit of the planning process! And a touch of Rudolf’s hammy side escaping again! The perturbed look on the cutout Mona’s face in the footstool scene is priceless! And Lisa; you would’ve made a wonderfully quirky “Beetlejuice”! GREAT addition to such an instant classic vid!
