It Ain’t Me Babe – Duo Session

Let’s start off the New Year with a new Duo Session!

Even though we love Bob Dylan it has been quite some time since we have uploaded any covers of his songs. In the earlier days of YouTube his publishers were quite strict on allowing cover versions. It seems like they have come to an agreement with YouTube in recent years, and we’ll keep our fingers crossed that this video will be able to stay up.

This song has been covered countless times by many well-known artists, but we first heard it when an Australian friend of ours covered in on ukulele … back in the Myspace days!

We loved it straight away and have been playing it ever since. If you’ve ever been to an acoustic duo shows of ours you will have probably heard us sing it 🙂

We want to wish you all a happy and healthy start of this new decade! Let’s do the Roaring Twenties justice!

  1. A few weeks ago on Twitter you asked for peoples favourite Dylan songs. I’ll respond here. Hope its ok. I have too many favourites to mention but here are a few:

Up To Me from the same sessions that resulted in his masterpiece Blood On The Tracks.

Like A Rolling Stone. Still sounds to me as explosive as the first time I heard it.

Its All Right Ma (I’m Only Bleeding) A song that many would consider cynical & pessimistic but to me its a celebration of the power of the individual to stand up to any thing society throws at him or her. Full of unforgettable lines.

Boots Of Spanish Leather. A simple but beautiful penetrating song . About love, lovesickness & betrayal.

Mr. Tambourine Man. To me its a song about surrendering yourself to the immense power of music. The ragged clown is the singer whose lyrics & voice are but a shadow of what the Tambourine man can reach through his music . This particular performance is like nothing I’ve ever heard. Its a one of a kind performance from his 1966 tour. The song doesn’t seem to be performed by him as much as through him. Have you ever heard harmonica like that? Its as if the Tambourine Man is playing the harmonica to the singer and us taking us all for a trip on his magic swirling ship.

  2. Just viewed this video and again wow! You have to love these ladies, the talent is awesome. To take this song and make it their own speaks volumes! Great job with the Harp and the vocals blend to nice!! They do it so easily , it is a joy to listen to and watch! Thank you

  3. I grew up listening to the Turtles singing that song before I knew Bob Dylan had it first…and now the MLT version…you girls are so talented…I mean I can’t chew gum and walk at the same time and there’s Mona keeping beat with her foot..playing guitar..singing…and playing harmonica pretty much all at once❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️???

  4. Ive always liked this song i have it by dylan and a young bloke called david jones b side was its me babe but i really like your version

  5. I liked the harmonies on this song. The octave difference is a side of you we don’t see often. I think it gives your music even more depth. I love it.

  6. Huge Dylan fan here and this is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever heard. Period. Mind blown. I’m glad this is digital because if it were vinyl I would have it worn down to shreds in a few weeks. Oh how I would love to hear you do “Don’t think twice, it’s alright.”

  7. Been listening to this one over and over and over……..for a few reasons. Many, many years ago (about 42) a guy I know and his friend played and sang this one in their set and it brought back those memories. Also, I believe it shows some of Mona’s best work. Lisa did well, too. Mike.

  8. Excellent job – as usual! Hey Lisa, are you engaged? Did you get married? I’m just noticing the ring on your left hand….

    1. I don’t think they answer such questions……could be wrong, though. Some time ago some of us noticed that Mona had a ring on the “ring finger” and questioned it……and the response: “No Reply”. Regardless, if either or both of the two are, I wish them the best. Mike.

  9. Awesome! Such a beautiful version. I’ve loved the Turtles version, but you did an incredible job with this. Your voices and skill put it over the top. I’m amazed at your artistic approach to your music. To take a good song and make it even better is wonderful. The MonaLisa magic strikes again with this, Imagine and Baby’s in Black. Thank you and happy New Year. You’ve already started mine off great.

  10. Nice interpretation of a classic song. Love the concept of shooting these clips where which are simple but yet effective and showcase your talent.

  11. It appears that you are really enjoying that corner of the studio where you get to shoot these dandy videos. Great music in an intimate yet casual setting. No budget busters here to get the music out. I know I’m enjoying the informal setting for these videos and I’m sure many of your fans are too. Keep it up.

  12. Wow, another great cover! You rocked this cover of “It Ain’t Me, Babe!” You look and sound amazing. Mona, that was an awesome display of your talent; playing the drum beat, guitar, harmonica and vocals! Great cover!! You both are so talented! Awesome!!

  13. I have now listened to this cover many times and it just keeps getting better. However, it finally dawned on me that something was missing. Are my eyes deceiving me or was Lampibampi sent to bed early! Does anyone else have any intelligence on this serious concern of mine?

I know I did request the Turtles version of this song, but forget the Turtles, this interpretation from Mona and Lisa is simply the best and is more faithful to Dylan’s original. Mona, your harmonica playing is improving in leaps and bounds. Did anyone else notice she had almost blown it out of its cradle by the end?

  14. My God I’m speechless again! You both just keep pushing that envelope into newer styles of music that impress more and more. Your singing and harmony is so diverse. The Beatles were like that which made them so special and I see that same kind of wonder in your music the more new stuff you keep doing. I never heard this Dylan song before, but man it sounds good when you both sing it. Brilliant, love it!

Mona, wow your harmonica or blues harp (are they same thing?) playing is superb!

  15. Dylon is there, as a musician, about 60 years, singing against war and they don’t listen to him. Well a Master talked about Love 2 thousands years ago and they don’t listen as well. It’s sad what happened to the world these days, I’m really worried. Sorry for my concern. Thanks God we have the music to take us away. Great cover!

  16. When you’re thinking it can’t get any better, here you go again. This is … beyond words. Will have to listen another hundred times or so to appreciate the nuances. It’s rounded, complex, precise, thoughtful, spontaneous, funny. An original arrangement that keeps the soul of the song and takes it to new and impossible heights. In the dust are the rest, including Joan, Johnny and even Bob.

Awesome, in the true sense of the word. ?

  17. I like everything you two did with the song…….After Dylan most know the Turtles’ cover and Johnny Cash’s cover…..but you made the song your own with this one. Just when I think I know what you can do musically, you exceed the expectations. You did it on Starman and with this song. Mona did such a good job singing lead and on the harmonica. Lisa did a good job on the harmonies. And the muffled guitar at the end was a great move on this song. I’m just amazed…..I’m beginning to think you two can do anything. Mike.

  18. I always liked Bob Dylan’s music but not always his performance of it. What you did here is simply fantastic. Love the arrangement and the two of you look like you are having a lot fun. I really enjoy these Duo sessions. It’s almost like getting a front row seat at a live performance.

  19. I absolutely loved this! A very lively and thoughtfully arranged version of one of my favorite Dylan songs. You both performed this so naturally, as if it was a beloved old friend. Btw, you asked the question; “if you’ve ever been to an acoustic Duo show of ours…” Well, the answer is unfortunately “No, I haven’t”, but just give me the opportunity -Please!!! Maybe 2020 will the the year we get to do that? You two ROCK!!!

  20. Ole Bob never sounded (and looked) better than when you girls perform his songs. I really liked the performance.

  21. Nice! This should be on the next CD. I’ve got 9 different Dylan versions of this tune (plus about 4 from other artists) and this is better than any of them. Lovely harmonies as always. Keep them coming please!

  22. Wow, we`re really being spoiled at the moment, what a great version of one of my favourite Dylan songs, love that harmonica and the harmonies, and you look like you`re really having fun playing it. I`m a huge Dylan fan too and have 10-11 of his albums i think. Although i`m one of those who admire him more as a poet and songwriter, than as a singer. I usually prefer other versions of his songs, like Byrds, or Jimi Hendrix with his version of All Along The Watchtower. I can`t tell you how much i enjoy these duo sessions. Just seeing the craftmanship and the skills you have as musicians, always being able to give a perfect live performance. Just a joy to watch.

  23. BRAVO! I love the way you make these songs your own! I’ll bet Bob would love this. Hope he gets to hear it. Mona rockin’ that harmonica hard! Is Lampi Bampi on vacation?

  24. Yes, what a fabulous way to start the new decade. A nice, upbeat version of one of Dylan’s great compositions. Let’s hope it remains on YouTube so that one day maybe everyone will be able to appreciate Dylan the way he ought to sound. I too have lots of hope for 2020, especially when it comes to new and old music from Mona and Lisa. ?❤️

  25. Wow! What a Dylan choice!
    Beautiful Harmonies as always!
Mona, how in the world do you do 3 things at once?
Blues Harp, Guitar, and Percussion! Plus Stunning vocals!
Lisa your Exceptional Guitar, and equally Stunning vocals!!
Your all’s period dress could not have been more fitting.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again.
Your arrangement and vocals I enjoy better than the Original.
I truly hope Dylan’s people allow this to stay for everyone to hear.
The World needs to hear this!
    Thanks Ladies! ?❤

  26. Now… This is how this song should be sung… Tremendous and Awesome… Great sound off to 2020 and first Wknd of 2020.. Luv that harmonica (bluesharp) Mona… One of my fave instruments… Thankyou for this… And the guitar ing on this… Splendidly Groovy… Luv it???

  27. Well done! You mention the song being a part of your live performance repertoire. Is this the arrangement you used? What a great take on this classic.

  28. Been a Dylan fan for years. I thought for anyone to cover his material and do it justice would be impossible. You girls have just proved me wrong.!! Wow I love it. Mona/ Lisa you never fail to please. Happy New Year to you both.’xx
