Junk – Duo Session

Memories for you and me …

When we first heard this song, it took our breath away. It’s Paul McCartney at his best. The melody, the chord progression, the subject matter, the way he manages to sing about something so deep in an incredibly light, moving and poetic way. It is one of those perfect songs.

We were hesitant to give it a go. It’s hard to compete with perfection. But then, what we do has never been about “improving” on any of the songs we cover. We pick songs because we love them, because we want to honour them and to experience performing and interpreting them ourselves. We like tapping into the magic of these songs and the people that created them.

We hope you enjoy this Duo Session and send big hugs to all of you,

Mona & Lisa

  1. Also, being new to the club, and having just purchased the duo sessions cd, I hope that duo sessions volume two will soon be released on CD!

  2. “Wow” he said. That was just about all he could say. “Wow.”
    — from Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes

  3. WOW. MonaLisa I never thaught that you will do this song, it is so beautiful to hear with the bass and guitar, you have such wonderful voices. Are you going to sing LOVE by John Lennon? Vous etes formidable, merci.

  4. I never realized how difficult it is to harmonize to “Junk” until I watched Galeazzo Frudua’s tutorial. Naturally, Mona and Lisa are up to the task, play beautifully on the guitar and bass, and give us pure magic. Thank you as always!

  5. To think this was one of the songs rejected on the Let It Be LP is unbelievable. Other rejects included Maybe I’m Amazed and Another Day. Let It Be was mediocre at best but those 3 songs along with Let It Be and The Long and Winding Road would have raised the album a bunch.

  6. Excellent cover. Don’t see Mona on bass much but I noticed she got in some good licks. Lisa had her guitar settings just right for the song. Great job!

  7. Wow. Absolutely beautiful! So beautiful. Such a fantastic job of finger picking on the Gretch… with your finger nails? Amazing Lisa!
Mona what an awesome job on the bass!
And both of you; wonderful, beautiful, heart melting vocals! I love your version almost as much as Paul’s. Great job on a very beautiful song.

  8. What a wonderful take on one of my favorite McCartney songs. Totally underrated song in my opinion. Loved your take on a beautiful melody. Thank you for this.

  9. Love the guitar and bass performance as well as the harmonies. When Lisa finger-picks her Gretsch electric it is magic. Also, Mona does a wonderful job in her accompaniment using Papa Rudi’s Hofner bass. Putting away the pick made this song so nice!

  10. It sounds like the genius of this song, has finally been actualized. I found it a pleasant and interesting song on the McCartney album, here I found a soulful gem. Thanks.

  11. Dynamic performance! I had to play it several times over just to capture all of the sensations produced by your rendition of this great McCarthy song.

  12. It might be wrong to say, but I believe you two do this better than Sir Paul. Your voices were made for this song. Of course, the guitar playing was impeccable. Thanks for th song. Mike.

  13. Hi Everyone,
Really cool song and arrangement. New Gretsch guitar, eh Lisa, very nice.
Always great to get a song from you ladies.
    Groovy or Far Out!!!

    1. After I whined about wanting more info on that little bass in Sounds of Silence, I realized that the Gretsch here isn’t the Duo Jet. I was about to dig in and try and learn a bit more about what is going on here. Your reply just moved me ahead several giant steps. But you see…. it isn’t just me. Just for the record, my first guess was Country Gentleman but now I get to figure out how bad a guess that turns out to be. Wowcool.

      1. Hi Kristi
I believe that guitar is from Gretchen custom shop or it is a special edition. The bass is like a 3/4 that is fine for playing but there are a lot of them out there. I don’t know the Brand but it sounded pretty good. I take it you play?
        Thanks for replying.
        Stay Groovy Walt Music

  14. Would it be wrong to say I like your cover of this song more than Paul’s original rendition?? If so, then I guess I have to be wrong. Your voices were made to do a song like this one. So pure and on pitch. But, then you two excel at anything you do. Thank you for such a lovely cover of this song. Mike.

  15. You guys are just incredible. I’m in awe of your ease with, and mastery of, various instruments. This song totally takes me back to about 1971-1972. You just recreate subjective states for me and capture the eternal nature of music as you evolve it.

  16. When I hear you do new Duo Sessions it just reconfirms why I became a fan. I do believe I like this version even better than Paul’s original. Just awesome.

  17. Another superlative rendition of a McCartney song that I’ve never heard before! Beautiful harmonies and sublime musicianship which make it your own. Not surprising that McCartney wrote a number of songs for o artists which they made their own. He must have had MLT in mind for this number!

  18. It took me back to a teenager shy boy, out of the place and also trying to deal with the end of his favorite band. This song and Maybe I’m amazed are my favorite ones from McCartney (I) and your version touched deep inside my ears and heart.

    1. It must have been awful, especially as a teenager, to witness the Beatles split. We still get upset when we watch the “Let It Be” video clips in which they argue in the studio! But I guess ‘all things must pass’ and thank God for that incredible music they left us with!

      1. It was awful, but I was hope that one day they would get back, till John went away. A Brazilian artist, Gilberto Gil, said in one of his song: “The dream is over. It was a heavy sleep for those who didn’t dream”. At least we dreamed and we still do. I’m waiting for the Get Back movie. Maybe it changes our minds about their fights.

  19. Beautiful job, Ladies. It was gentle, thoughtful and plaintive. You make these sensitive songs so lovely not just because of your musical and vocal skills, but because of the beautiful hearts that you both have which interpret the music so perfectly.

  20. Just lovely! Your harmonies are the best! It’s interesting that sir Paul reprised this song later on the album as Sing Along Junk, just playing the tune without the words. It felt like filler to me. I love that there’s no filler with you, just perfection!

  21. Hi, very beautiful song. It has some tricky progressions between minor and major chords, and you managed to nail that perfectly with your voice harmonies. Good selection of instruments (Mona on Bass this time), and beautiful hair style for Lisa 🙂
May I suggest another great song from the same McCartney album, called “Every night”. I think it fits your style very much, and I hope you will consider it in the future for your Duo Sessions.

  22. As always, worth waiting for, you put so much into your music and video’s it is perfect. Mona nice seeing you on the bass! So cool and Lisa wow great job with the guitar riffs. And the harmony’s are pitch perfect, Sir Paul would be very proud to see this gem re done with love and perfection. Yes I do remember this song on his solo album. I played that album till grooves wore out and bought another copy and CD. And the production of this video is wonderful. The outfits, perfect, your looks again perfect and just the two of you singing and seeing how much you put into your music is magic to us. Thank you again for sharing your craft with all of us to witness perfection in this world and letting us know yes this music is still alive and well. God bless you both you made my Saturday Morning here in the USA and today is the first day of spring so what better way to celebrate. To see this great video and enjoy the wonderful sounds you both send to all of us. Love it Love it !!!
Bill Isenberg and Maddie Isenberg huge fans from Pittsburgh Pa USA

  23. Great version of one of Paul’s best from 1970 .Now I’m waiting for your version of Becausefrom the Abbey Road LP. Keep going- you are fantastic

  24. A very beautiful song and rendition of it! I don’t think I have heard this one before. It’s great to discover new music through you. Thanks for sharing!

  25. Maybe I’m amazed at the way you sing this song

I don’t recall ever hearing this song before today.  I wanted to hear the original before I heard this, so I watched Sir Paul whatshisname’s video on YouTube.  He’s, um okay.  You two never fail to Amaze.  Now when I listen to Sir Paul’s original, I think some songs are written for other voices.

You both look fantastic as always.  Now we see where the bass face came from.  Nice one, Mona.  Sounds great.

Thanks again for making these.  They are the next best thing to live performances.  You are creating a lot of happy energy tonight.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

    JP

  26. This was very special and simply beautiful. Your ability to capture the essence of every song you do with just the right amount of production is genius. Just as white space will focus an observer’s eye to what is around it, your use of simplicity and quiet space within the song helps add emotional context to the beautiful melody and harmony you weave together here. This is truly a gem. I can’t thank you enough.

  27. Oh, it’s beautiful!
Mona and Lisa’s taste of this Paul’s classic song is even more beautiful.

All the covers are great, but this one in particular is my favourite.
I think they sang and played this moist and sombre song perfectly.
    Thank you! ????????????????‍????????

  28. I’m just completely enamored by both your beautiful singing and harmonies, outstanding! Such an elegant, and unique little gem this song is, never heard it before. You both look so classy, and love what you did with your hair Lisa. As always great intricate guitar work and a treat seeing you Mona on the bass on this one. You’re both such versatile musicians indeed.

I like the lyrics, reminds me of the many little towns scattered in the northern part of the province where I live and lots of old antique stores can be found in these unique little towns. Over the recent years I’ve enjoyed visiting these little small town antique shops where you can find myriads of other peoples junk that becomes another’s treasured possession. Song reminds me of that.

Thank you for this beautiful Duo Session, a real gem.

  29. Every aspect of this video is amazing! Instrument choices and mastery thereof, solo and harmony vocals, production quality, wardrobe, hairdos…. stunning use of your long braid, Lisa! You’ve blessed this community of music lovers again!

  30. Another Beautiful cover of a beautiful(underrated in my opinon) song .You ladies never disappoint. This has always been one of my favorites off the McCartney album.Would love to hear you cover Every Night from that album, sometime in the future perhaps.
As always,Love to everyone at Team MLT.
p.s. This made my day a whole lot Brighter.

  31. Beautifully done !! Yes Bravo indeed. I love how you “toe tap” another instrument into the music. Mona’s bass playing was quite perfection. The finger picking that Lisa does is spot on. This should be included in a Duo Sessions Zwei. It truly is a beautiful song sang by two of Natures best. While listening, all I could do is just sigh with a big smile. I enjoyed it very much. As always, Peace, Love and Happiness

  32. Wonderfully done again – you were certainly successful in “tapping into the magic” of this beautiful song! And Mona on base, you always seem to have a surprise lately.

  33. Beautiful. This is one of the songs I listened after school. Paul wrote so many songs that you could visualize what he was singing about. Thanks for doing the cover, brings back some great memories.

  34. Ladies, beautiful!! I did never heard the original but this song is beautiful. Your voices are making it special, not to forget the subtle guitar play.

  35. i have always loved this song and hum it on a regular basis myself, wonderful job as always and brings back great memories for me. Please keep up the fantastic work!

  36. Just wow. Beautiful. Another song I wasn’t familiar with, come spectacularly to life. Whenever I hear one of your performances of a song I don’t really know, I go out to the internet/YouTube and search for the original and other interpretations to see what I had been missing. McCartney’s version is good, and there is an excellent solo classical-style performance by Danish guitarist, but your vocals and playing (!!!) – just flat out the best out there. Couple that with superb sound quality and great classy visuals, and MLT just can’t be beat. How you can do this time after time is just amazing. (Actually I think I do know how – it’s called talent, dedication, and hard work.) Thanks for posting this. (Hope you slip a MLT original in a Duo Session sometime soon ????.)

  37. Love, love, love it. I’m impressed how every time, you keep pushing the envelope, evolving and getting better all the time, even when it seems there’s no more room to improve. The challenge with this song is the sweet nostalgic feeling, which you nail with apparent simplicity. The vintage Tennessean is perfect, as is the bass. For a moment I though the accordion was coming out.
I’m also loving the new studio setup, really warm feeling, outfits, all the details are just perfect, even how you rack focus into the story.
I loved this song long before I understood what the lyrics were about and I was always perplexed as to why it wasn’t widely known.
Awesome and most worthy rendition. ????

  38. This was new to me, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, the #MLTBuzzLuvGroovified Harmonious and Music Magic that eminates from you just keeps on and is a constant smile to my ears, Thankyou for this delightful rendition. Love Mona’s turn on bass, and your new backdrop, outfits, hairstyles, it just all vibes perfectly????????

  39. What a pleasant surprise! You know we all love your upbeat originals and covers but this was very beautiful, relaxing and gives reason to reflect on special memories in my life. I know you are not trying to “one up” Paul, but honestly, I think your version of this song would make him smile…. as it did me.

  40. This song matches up so well with your strengths, ladies. It seems a perfect fit for your vocals and harmonies! Splendid!

  41. Hey Mona and Lisa!

That was so great! I love the way your voices blend together. I haven’t head that song in such a long time. It’s very pretty the way the two of you do it. Love your Duo Sessions!

By the way, I was wanting to tell you that it’s tax time here in the states and it usually takes me 7-10 days to get everything organized to send to the cpas, so I got all my MLT cds and played them over and over until my taxes were done. It was great! Can’t wait until you put out a new cd.

    Take care and stay safe,

    Kenny

  42. Wow! I had never heard the song till now, andbi have to say I am extremely impressed. Not improve the song? I don’t know about that, but you certainly gave it new meaning.
We have the advantage here in the Club, of being able to enjoy different and unique challenges that you set for yourself, that others may never see.
Mona on the Bass is a huge treat, and seeing the Gentlemens Tennessean is always a treat.
Thanks Ladies for such a Special and Enjoyable Friday Treat!????????‍♀️❤????‍????

  43. I’ve had a soft spot for this song ever since I heard it the first time. Sounds a little like a negotiation session. Your playing and voices were just great….looking forward to what’s next. Mike.

  44. You two are phenomenal! That was a very beautiful rendition delivered by two extraordinary women. Thank you for everything you do!

  45. Girls, you are so beautiful. You’re voices sound like angels from heaven. Thank you for sharing that song. You make each song feel like it’s yours and that is a special gift just as each of you are.
    Love and Hugs,
    Gary Bergen
