Paint It Black – Live at the Cavern Club

I see a red door …

… and I want it painted black. Black like the doors to the Cavern Club …

Welcome to another clip from our “Live at the Cavern Club” series where you can watch all videos from our final Cavern show, track-by-track just as we played it that night.

After kicking the evening off with Drive My Car we followed with this haunting Rolling Stones song. Many years ago we had recorded an acoustic version of it (you can watch it here) but we loved adapting it back to a full-band track for our live shows.

We hope you enjoy your next visit to the “Cave”!

  1. Mona & Lisa,

I saw this just before I left for hiking this morning, and WOW, great job everyone! I love the speed & intensity of Lisa’s lead vocal! She gives the song so much feeling! Then Mona matches her intensity & spirit with her perfect harmony! You both truly sing as one! Great lead & rhythm guitar, & so much energy from the whole band!

It’s interesting how such a simple minor melody can yield so much emotion when played with the artistry that you both have. The first 8 measures are in B Harmonic Minor, & switch to B Natural Minor in the next 8. The process is repeated over & over with more intensity. Of course I love the Stones live version too, but you ladies take it to a another level!

I dig your drummers awesome technique & showmanship! He & the bass player really drive everything, and the 4 of you play so beautifully together!

This is the 1st time I saw your Duo Version of this song, & even just the two of you play with the same emotion & intensity as does your full band! I can see why you love the support of the two guys, but your musicianship shines even as a Duet! I also love Mona’s technique on the Cuban Cajon!

These two versions of “Paint It Black” cement your artistry even more! Just keep doin ‘ what you’re doin!’ Your obvious love of making Music is infectious, giving all your fans a big emotional boost! We all need that in these trying times!

Take care, & Rock On Mona and Lisa! Thank you both! — Bud Jackson

  2. I’ve watched your acoustic version of this a lot and love it but I also love all these Cavern Club videos. You guys sound so good live and it looks like you are having a blast. I would’ve loved to have been there.

  3. This was the first time that I saw the Cavern Club version. Would always play the MLT studio version before our high school baseball games (a pitcher hitting the corners of the plate is known as “painting the black”). After watching this…holy cow! Mona beginning the song by finger picking her Martin and then taking the pick (plectrum) out of her mouth and start strumming and wailing…oh my, what emotion! Lisa was haunting with her singing and, of course, her guitar work was flawless!

The song just blew me away. Thank you ladies.

  4. I Finally got a chance to see this video and wow, I love the version on U Tube and this one takes it to another level! Well done ladies! This song came out in 1966 and you brought it back with a new feel and life which I Have been saying all along that only a handful of musicians can re do a song and make it their own. My hats off to you both, your amazing and thank you so much for your wonderful and god given talent
Bill Isenberg a huge fan from Pittsburgh Pa USA

  5. If i found the ” Aladdin’s Lamp” one of my request to the genius would be.. ” back to the past to watch the MLT shows at the Cavern Club”.. your performance on the stage is fantastic.. OMG.,
I wish I had been there on these amazing show. Maybe one day it will happen.. my dream is see you on the stage.. I loved !! as always.. thanks dear girls?❤

  6. While never a big Stones fan I thought this song was one of their better ones. For my money, you girls exceed any performance of the song that the Stones ever did. You did a fantastic job on this one.

  7. Well… maybe I’ll give the Stones another chance. If they’re half as good as this… I’d be a fan. Only wish I’d have known back then, I would have flown over just for the show.
I was at the Cavern in 1989, though I don’t remember writing my name on the wall, (@ 0:26) but there are so many things I don’t remember… ?

  8. It was OK.

Joking of course, another fantastic performance from the whole band.
Loved the drum tuning on the toms. I think the skins are a bit looser to give that slightly deader sound that really suits this era of music.

  9. Simply astonishing. Only great cover of the classic Stones piece. Your backup group is great as well.
Playing guitar must be a passion for you both. I can visualize you both just starting the day by breakfasting and grabbing your guitars, then just playing and playing.

  10. it is a fave cover version you have done that I tend to play a lot and sing along with you on it, and air drum or whatever that instrument you had used in the other video of it…but this Cavern rendition takes it to a whole new level of appreciation, Thannkyou for sharing it with us, am truly digging the Groovy Cavern show stuff here, and am already anticipating with MLTBuzzGroovy Enthusiasm and looking forward to next one you’ll be posting :)…Made my Friday !!!!…My Wknd starting off good !!

  11. Thanks for that great video! This is a real treat for the many that have wished they could go back and see your Cavern Club performances. Your performance skills are outstanding! The energy you put into your performance is amazing. Love watching your drummer too. Mad skills, having fun and possibly a juggler on the side?

  12. You know how to capture the mood and mystique of this song perfectly with your fantastic melodic singing and humming. You can hear the audience just loved it! Your video of this song from a few years earlier was awesome, and this live performance too does so much justice to the song, and your skilled magic singing and musicianship adds so much character to it, it comes alive. Brilliant!

  13. Fantastic cover – vocals from MLT outshine the original. You ladies generate such incredible energy and happiness on stage .
Your live performances are musically and vocally phenomenal. Again, I will go anywhere to see you live in the future…

  14. Wow! I like this Live version so much better than the duo version.
I guess being live it just makes it better.
    It sounds fuller and richer.
Thanks ladies really enjoyed it. ?❤

  15. Your studio recording of this song is also excellent and operates as one of my absolute favorites!
Many many thanks for sharing all these wonderful videos with us.

  16. Yabba dabba do! Thanks for this Mona and Lisa. One of my all time favourites from the sixties. Just excellent ?❤️
