Tell Me Why – Live at the Cavern Club

Talk about an underrated Beatles song!

From the minute we first tried “Tell Me Why” during a rehearsal we knew it would be a great addition to the Cavern Club set. It screams “1964”, doesn’t it? Solid 3-part harmonies and some high energy 60s pop.

It’s hard to understand why this song wasn’t a single … until you look at the rest of the “A Hard Day’s Night” track-list and realise that you could say the same about any of the songs!

We don’t need to tell you how much we loved playing this, we think it shows 😉

Stay groovy ♥

  1. Mona nails the lead vocal (as she does on “You Can’t Do That”) with some great harmony from sis. Along with the title song and “I Should Have Known Better”, this is the tune I most associate with the movie “A Hard Day’s Night”.

  2. Greetings from Long Island,
Great performance. Yes, I can see how much you loved performing the song.
Lisa was smiling a lot, I was thinking that her boyfriend just lied to her and she should be upset – so why is she smiling, haha. Or maybe it was Mona’s beau?
    Just kidding, of course.
And I really, really enjoy watching & listening to your drummer & bass player.
Do you keep in contact with them? If you ever play live again, it would be great if they could join you.

Talking about Beatles’ songs that were not singles. Yes, there could have been so many more. But you know, it was a real treat that so many of the Beatles’ singles had great B Sides (some better than the A sides lol).
Most of the time, when we purchased singles, back in the day, the B side was just a so-so track off the LP (sometimes they were crappy).
Many of the Beatles’ singles on ’45 rpm, had double-sided hits. A few examples are: Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields, Hey Jude/Revolution, I Feel Fine/She’s a Woman.
Is anybody familiar with a very early Beatles’ song – Ask Me Why? It was the flip side of Please, Please Me. If you haven’t heard it, please give it a listen – it is called “Ask Me Why” (in comparison to “Tell Me Why” lol). It’s a FABulous song.

This was a real Monday Treat. Thanks.
    See you on Friday,
    Bobby S.

  3. Those harmonies sound amazing for a live performance. They are perfect and beautiful. The little growl Mona has in her voice is so unique. It has the same effect that the cry in Lennon’s voice had. It’s something special.

  4. Just another absolutely superb cover of a great Beatles song! This song is one of my favorites and your attention to detail and your arrangement hit another Beatles cover “Out of the flipping Park.”

As Always, “Thanks for the Memories”

  5. Wow, how great to hear Mona’s rock and roll growl on this song. One of my favourite Beatles’ songs and you performed it so well.
Another reason to be a Monalisatwins fan. Love you two girls and everything you do.

  6. Great, great version! That just absolutely makes me want to sing and dance! That will be the next song that I learn to play! It was perfection!

  7. Love the ‘growl’ in Mona’s voice on the first verse, and the leap into falsetto on the one line in the final verse! I do think that the HDN soundtrack represents the peak in terms of the Beatles’ early pure pop genius. Every song is different, and brilliant.

  8. An underrated Beatles song? Is that possible? Certainly, one of my early favorites. Love this song and what an impeccable performance. Full of fun and joy! Awesome!

  9. Absolutely a great song choice for MLT to perform not only at The Cavern Club but anywhere..HINT…HINT…The States are opening up…TEXAS is wide open …time for an AMERICAN TOUR …get the band back together….”Well I beg you on my bended knees…If you’ll only listen to my pleas”

  10. Hi Mona, Hi Lisa … Thank you for another piece of a wonderful concert., I loved it ..you are fantastic.,????????????????♥️

  11. Awesome cover. The 3 part harmonies sounds great and Mona did a wonderful job on the lead vocals, another great cover by the whole band.

  12. Mona and Lisa, you did a great job on one of my all time favorite songs. You look like you are having so much fun playing it.

  13. You are so right, an underrated song and you did it more then justice!! Great beat and
you hit those high notes so well.!! Never having been to London, England (only London,Ontario Canada), I wondered if the “Cavern Club” is as small as it looks in the videos?
    Keep rockinI
    TR

  14. Such great vocals light up this song, and with those tight and elegant guitar sounds, it just rocks. Interestingly I always thought this was a Beach Boys cover of an old 50s song they popularized, but it is indeed a Beatles song the Beach Boys covered that is rare. It appears on the Beach Boys Party album, and was included on some Beach Boys best of compilation albums I had. Anyway Mona and Lisa, in your tradition you do both the Beatles original and Beach Boys cover magnificent justice! Double kudos! 🙂

  15. Mona has the perfect vocal tone for this lead, and the three-part harmony is superb! Falsettos, though brief, were AMAZING! The usual incredible guitars, as well as great bass and drums! The only criticism I can come up with applies to several of your songs, IMHO: It’s too darn short! I suppose it’s a good thing to leave your audience wanting more, tho! ROCK ON!

    1. Hi Jeff,
Yes, lots of songs of yesterday were rather short. Many were barely over two minutes long. A song by the Box Tops, that I really like, called “The Letter” was only 1:58.
In contrast, some artists, like Bob Dylan and the Doors, had very long songs. Especially on their LP Albums. The AM radio stations usually had to play a shorter version of the song, which sometimes, but not always, was on their ’45 record version.
      Take care,
      Bobby S.

  16. Another great live cover in such a fantastic (authentic) location. Loved the lead, coupled with sublime harmonies and rhythm.

  17. WooHoo, yeah… Kudos, and this is what defines #MLTBuzzLuvGroovified , just fab going, groovy all the way, the vibes, musicianship, etc., the whole shebang of it. You’ve put a smile in my ears, on my face, and got my wknd off to a humdinger dandy start, Thankyou for this, music luv to my ears, singing along, dancing, toe tapping, Awesome ????????????

  18. As always, sipping a coffee, getting my radio playlist together and listening to my favorite duo harmonizing at the Cavern…

  19. Absolutely fantastic! Best live band ever! Should be put into a remade version of A Hard Day’s Night! Friday can’t arrive soon enough each week

  20. Hey Mona and Lisa!

Y’all did such a great job on this song and you’re right, it looked like you were having a blast playing it! Thanks for this wonderful video!

  21. MLT magic is undeniable on this song! Those falsesettos are bench mark on this song now! Whew!!! Still reeling from chills and euphoria everytime I hear your version. Without a doubt, you know whats coming when you hear those first few notes.
Mesmerized is what comes to mind when listening to you all play. Thanks so much Ladies!!!????????‍♀️????❤????‍????????

  22. Another wonderful cover of classic Beatles! I love the energy of these live performances! Can’t wait for the COVID restrictions to be over so we can maybe see some new live performances? Although maybe this could be adapted to two-part harmony and an acoustic Duo Session?

  23. I always liked ‘Love me Do’, I think it got to number 2 in the hit Parade 1962,,,? : had that distinctive juke box sound that helped the coffee down – fond memories of Church Lane Coffee Bar, Twickenham.

  24. Another Gem of a song for the Mona Lisa Twins! Your so right, this song has tight harmonies and such energy, it lifts you up and want to hold your hands up and sing along. In listening to this on the CD, You can tell this is a favorite selection. You ladies are simply the best, you take these songs and make them like new in 2021. Thank you so much for making our Friday special and great!! Love It …Love It….Love It!!!

  25. Great job Mona and Lisa and band. I really enjoyed your take on this song. Tell Me Why is one of my favorites early songs by the Fab 4. Loved your version… Yea yea yea ….\

  26. Another AMAZING cover of a Fab 4 classic!!
Made my Friday all the more happier, thanks for a spot of Sunshine,on an otherwise cloudy day on Long Island.
As always Love & Hugs to Team MLT

  27. one of my favorite early Beatles songs. Mona & Lisa and band covers this song very well .a very good live performance!
