Make Show – Behind the Scenes

How to make show!

Are you interested in how we filmed our most recent video “Make Show”? We cut together a behind-the-scenes video documenting a bit of the process so we can share it with you here in the MLT Club.

The last few music videos that we filmed had all taken 3 days of shooting and coincidentally “Make Show” was no exception. We spent 3 days in our small but mighty filming room trying to capture the essence of the song and then made some more magic happen during the editing process.

We loved the effectiveness of a quite simple video idea and hope you all enjoy this look behind the curtains!

Down the line we will share some footage of our initial idea for a music video that we filmed all the way back in 2020 in Hamburg. 🙂

Stay groovy,
Mona & Lisa

  1. This was such a creative and ‘exotic’ video! When I first saw it – a year ago, that eerie guitar hook and seeing your faces all done up like clowns hit me at a strange angle. But you had the music, the vibe, the lyrics, and a strong vision – I saw such deep artistic expression here, and such classic references to theatrical performance, which you just don’t see anymore these days. (It also reminds me of the Beatles in Hamburg, when the crowd shouted ‘Mak Show’!!) The makeup, the outfits, the dance moves, THAT LIPSTICK, the lighting – it’s all so well orchestrated and the song [and VIDEO] is one of my topper-most favorites now!!! * The girls are so cute, needless to say, and this making-of/behind the scenes give us such a great glimpse of what went into it. I love these!

  2. After being a member of the MLT Club for one month, I finally got around to watching this behind the scenes video. It was great to watch your transformation from yourselves into “clowns”. I love the way Mona made her over exaggerated lips💋.

  3. Props to Papa Rudi for his expertise in editing. It may have been low budget, but it looks so good! I’ve mentioned this before, but it has a real Bob Fosse vibe. Was that intentional? Keep bringing us such stellar content! Love the whole family!

  4. Seeing the green screen tells me to be on the lookout for some exotic, perhaps even otherworldly, location backdrops in videos to come. 🙂

  5. I found it very interesting to go behind the scenes in making this video. I have only joined the MLT club today and I can already see that it is so much more informative than following you as a visitor. Looking forward to navigating my way around the Club.

      1. Semi-crazy? I resent that characterization, Michael. I’ve been working at this for a long time, and I’m certainly a lot more than 50% of the way to crazy by now.

  6. It’s always interesting to see a little more of how you create the pieces that end of being a completed video. I’ll bet the video editing part is a lot of work.

Master engineer Rudi comes up with some really amazing stuff! When I “engineer” things there is no doubt they are homemade. They sometimes work ok, but they look homemade. Rudi’s creations look like quality manufactured items that cost a pretty penny – very impressive.

I was in Roswell, NM, USA a few years ago. Mona’s alien looks a lot like many of them there. Perhaps all of them “Jumped Ship” before it crashed?

Thanks for giving us another inside look at the MLT creative studio.

    1. Hi Dennis, thanks for mentioning the video editing. I’ve been wondering about that myself. Who’s the master of the editing software? What software is it? My guess is Final Cut Pro, but I don’t know enough to spot clues in the finished product. One thing for sure–team MLT is incredibly skilled in music and music video production. Even album artwork! The only piece left to learn is that they run their own CD production unit and print shop and have a global distribution company for getting everything into the eager hands of their fans.

      1. Video editing is something I’m not very good at. I’ve heard Lisa’s name mentioned before in reference to video editing, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that the whole MLT team is good at it. It would be a great question to ask for the next question and answer session.

  7. You are all so talented at putting these videos together, very professional .
And always such a joy to watch !

  8. Wow! There’s so much work goes into your videos. You must be exhausted afterwards. But it did look like a lot of fun. Mona, I had one of those aliens too.

  9. That was terrific! Very informative and just so much fun to watch. It’s amazing what you’re able to achieve with a small but smart and skilled team and some creative problem solving. I’d love to see a video collection dvd. Watching on my computer is okay, but these deserve the big screen.

  10. Seeing this was very cool indeed! Judging from the final product of your videos one would never know how you could manage to get such fantastic results working with such small space and minimal equipment. (Although I have to give copious kudos to Rudi in coming up with that very clever background screen system!)

Of course what really makes this and all your videos so fantastic is your creativity and passion for getting only the very best results possible – and you do it all the time. Make Show is absolutely over the top stupendous. MLT is completely and totally amazing!!! Thanks so much for showing this to us.

  11. Even when there is lots to get into the video process and I’m sure, tons of trial and error (pressure to “get it done”) it’s still obvious it was a lot of fun in the making. Thank you for the behind the scenes peek and I look forward to more.
I’m just sorry I didn’t get here at MLT Club sooner. My bad! But it’s GROOVY!!!

  12. Once again kudos on your outstanding video. Thanks for showing us how you arrived at such an outstanding end product. The best part is you show other artists that it doesn’t take massive and overinflated budgets to “get it done.”
As a silent film buff, maybe you could make stills of some the demo scenes as they are a study in shadows. Peace be.

  13. Always enjoyed the Behind the Scenes videos and today’s was no exception. The ingenuity that Team MLT shows in the creation process always is fun to watch. The entire team is so talented!

Lisa is back to using her props again…the dog with the eye infection was so funny!

The Demo Video was outstanding. Liked it as much as the final product!

It is interesting to know that the concept for the song originated long ago. It will be great to see some of the original footage!

    Well-done, Mona and Lisa.

  14. I’ve been waiting to see the application of the lipstick, just what I had expected, lol. You weren’t exactly on the same page. Both were artistic and beautifully done however Mona went to the extreme, very nice and creepy. I laughed at Lisa’s double take, too funny.

  15. Love these “behind the scenes” videos. And so many great music videos coming from that little room. I am amazed and impressed by it all!

  16. It must be fun being creative and coming up with new ideas for your videos. I’m really surprised how much more effective and dramatic the use of black and white was over colour for these scenes – good choice!

  17. Absolutely loved seeing this behind the scenes video of Make Show. Your talents just never ceases to amaze me, I really thought you both went to a professional studio make up artist for this, but turns out you did the make up yourselves! Wow. Love seeing the ingenuity that went into the filming, the know how, your amazing professionalism, the choreography, the lighting. That professional studio spotlight lamp looks awesome, 👍 wow, love it! Thanks so much for showing us how you do your amazing on screen magic. A professional film crew from Hollywood, couldn’t have done it better! Would love to see the Hamburg video clips of the initial Make Show video concept. You guys could give a cinematography course. The Make Show video is amazing, and your ingenuity, skills, and professionalism just shine here! Thanks so much for this, thoroughly enjoyed it!

  18. Your creative talent is amazing in showing the behind the scenes. This one is Make Show is a favorite along with other you have created. Those are Maxwells Silver Hammer, I Wanna Kiss You, and Bought Myself A Politician. The drone videos are amazing. Maybe consider compiling into a DVD in your store? The Gosling video is sweet as all of what you do is. You did a B&W music video that really brings a colorful shining light into a darkened world from all of your creativity.

  19. I love the video and it is amazing how it looks so polished despite being low budget.
Honestly though, the biggest thing I took out of this is how naturally beautiful you girls are without makeup. I’m serious, you are gorgeous.😍😍

  20. Oh BTW Mona I love your jacket…where did you get it 😂I’ve got 2 of them..one for me and one going to some lucky soul for Christmas….looking forward to the ADVENT CALENDAR starting next week.❤️🧡

  21. Good morning ladies…this Friday video came really early and it gets my day started off great ! I gotta say my wife should take lessons with the makeup thing as you were ssssoooo fast in applying it …but she would still be “fashionably late” for wherever she would be going and I’d be asleep in the chair when she’d finally be ready…can I hear a “hell yeah” from any of you married men out there…… I absolutely love this BTS video…y’all are so creative……from simplicity of a little baby goose adding its special touch to Mona’s painting to make it perfect to testing out several flash lights to get the desired effect and even getting a new backdrop machine for various effects….y’all are genuinely talented….Thank You Mona..Lisa..Papa Rudi.. and Michaela…..I love what you do ❤️🧡

  22. That was genius. Love the look you came up with. I find it amazing what the four of you accomplish in a week! It’s better than big production companies do in a month for thousands and thousands of dollars.Thank you for the peek behind the scenes. You look so cool in B&W in that makeup. All the best. 🙂

  23. Mona and Lisa, thank you so much for sharing. This goes to show you that you do not need all the high tech and paid pros to do a perfect video. I Love how you guys make due with what you have and to not go over the top. Another point of not signing with a huge record label and paying the big wigs and stock holders of the company, just Mona , Lisa , Rudi and Michealla. Your perfection is beyond words to me. Such a great song to open the album with and to do it in Black and White is so cool to me, it adds to the magic. Years ago they released the movie It’s a Wonderful Life in Color and it did not hold the same passion as the black in white version. When you have 4 great minds together good things happen. Looking forward to next Friday! Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
God bless and hugs from me and Maddie

  24. Sadly I have a touch of coulrophobia – being creeped out by clowns. While I like the song and especially love the guitar fills, I have to say I much more enjoy the amazing Mona and lovely Lisa in their naturally beautiful selves before the makeup goes on…

  25. That was really interesting and Mona’s eye makeup was amazing and slightly scary. For a moment I thought Papa Rudi was going to go through the ceiling when setting up the lights but he’s been really creative with realising your ideas. That’s a fantastic spotlight well worth getting. Can’t wait for part 2 in Hamburg.

  26. Very interesting and impressive! Thank you so much for these videos. It shows how hard you work and your high level of accomplishment. Wow!

  27. As always, thanks for sharing another peek behind the curtain (quite literally this time!) It’s fascinating how different the mood is between the color demo footage and the “creeped-out” final product. It’s also interesting how subtle your final makeup could be to create the look you achieved in black and white. Maybe it will be something you discuss in your next Q&A video, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on how you learned the various video techniques you’ve used over the years. The videos have certainly come a long way from the two of you sitting in a cave at Uluru!

  28. Whoa … That was impressive, now I’m fully awakened, as are my eyes( Thankyou Rudi for having investing wisely/worthy a the same time in getting that professional spotlight acquirement) … All that went into this simplified , stripped down video, but resulted in most dramatic, effective manner you all were aiming for for this song … It just gets me in awe everytime when you show a BTS video , etc… The new backdrop thing that you now have, is cool… makes things a little more tech smooth, I would say ( I’m not all techsmart but I know funky functional-practical when I see it ) It just gobsmacked me how professional and beyond you are with the production of what goes into making of these videos, and I must say, more impressed by your Calibre of detail, accuracy, etc than actual professionals …Truly remarkable …. Looking forward to future additional extras regarding this song idea….Kudos and utter #MLTBuzzLuvGroovified enjoyed watching in awe, learning, appreciation even moreso in how you take a brainstorm concept and it becomes this …. Just stunning ….
Groovy and Beyond, Thankyou for sharing the BTS magic on this … Jaw-dropping 💜🤘👏

  29. Hello Ladies!
This was so interesting and informative! I was enthralled as to how everything came together. Mona did you outline your mouth first before putting on the lipstick? Or did you just continue applying it till you got your effect you were looking for? I’m curious how you got that great look. It sure doesn’t look like you. 😳 Lisa I love how inventive you were with your guitar licks! Thanks Ladies for I r showing some of your instruments in the video.
Love Make Show. Great and fun video.
    Best to all of you
    Rick

  30. I am fascinated by this song and video. It shows a lot of work and technical ability. I look forward to the rest of the story on this video. Still enjoying the album. One more interesting facet of the album release is that it has been five years since the last one and it shows how you are changing musically. From age 23 to 28 there are a lot of changes in people (generally) and it shows some in your music. Mike.
