Day 5

Today we’re writing the remaining lyrics for those of you who ordered some during the “Black Friday” MLT Club Special. Thank You to all of you who secured theirs – they were gone within a few hours!

Unfortunately, we had to limit them to just 15 as we won’t have time to fit in a larger amount, but we will make sure to do things like that or similar again in the future! We certainly appreciate the interest and are excited to ship these bad boys off later today!

Lyrics can mean different things to different people, and we all have certain songs in our lives whose words mean something special to us. Do you want to share some of your favourites with us? Maybe just a line or phrase that has always stuck out to you?

My (it’s Mona writing today … we always swap who’s writing these posts) go-to “perfect” lyrics are John Lennon’s words in “Across The Universe”.
They inspire and move me every single time and flow so effortlessly …

M&L xx

  1. Just received the handwritten lyrics to June. Beautifully done. Best Christmas gift ever. I will always cherish it. Thanks ladies!

  2. I always loved Elton John’s “Daniel”, because I envisioned it as a sad song about a soldier killed in Vietnam. I recorded it myself for Veterans Day this year when I found out that it ACTUALLY was written about a Vietnam Veteran returning home to Texas and just wanting to try to live again. I always get teary eyed singing it.

  3. I’m too pessimistic. My song-identity choices would include King Midas in Reverse (Hollies) and Nowhere Man (can’t remember who… 🙂 )

  4. Wow…….to many songs with great lyrics in my brain todust of….but this one certainly comes to mind. If you know how the song goes, it is even better

“The Sweetest Thing (I’ve Ever Known)” by Juice Newton

When I see you in the morning with the sleep still in your eyes,
I remember all the laughter and the tears we shared last night.
And as we lie here, just two shadows in the light before the dawn,
the sweetest thing I’ve ever known is loving you.

And I have never been afraid of losing now.
And I have never wanted love to be a chain.
I only know that when I’m with you, you’re my sunshine, you’re my rain.
The sweetest thing I’ve ever known is loving you.
The sweetest thing I’ve ever known is loving you.

Now, you and I, we’re not children.
We have both been loved before.
We have given and we have taken many rides on troubled shores.
But all the heartaches and temptations only make me love you more.

  5. “Across the Universe”, wonderful song. Was turned on to you guys with your “Beatles and More” CD. Waiting for the Christmas Album to arrive in the mail. FYI, Happy Birthday to me.

    1. I agree Bob, Across the Universe is so beautiful. Had to listen to it again. What an incredible song John Lennon wrote. Love the way the song starts with that guitar lead in on such a sweet melody. One of the Beatles signatures to their style are their remarkable song intros. Paul said of And I Love Her, it would be nothing without George’s wonderful guitar riff intro.

  6. “Life Is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans” is a favorite of mine from John Lennon’s Beautiful Boy. Another from a song I still need to write is, “I wasn’t born rich, but I became Rich shortly after”. Ha, ha.

  7. Hi Mona. I’m with you regarding John’s perfect “Across the Universe” lyrics but I also have to include his ‘Imagine’. Another all time favourite for me has been Simon and Garfunkel’s “I Am A Rock”. A little melancholic, I know, and not uplifting like most of their songs, but definitely evocative of a very dark period of my life.
    “I have my books
And my poetry to protect me
I am shielded in my armor
    Hiding in my room
    Safe within my womb
I touch no one, and no one touches me

    I am a rock
    I am an island

And a rock feels no pain
    And an island never cries”!

Actually, i think you and Lisa could put a very positive spin on this song. Now if only there were eight days a week!

  8. Have you ever recorded “Across the Universe”? I don’t see it on any of your albums or YouTube so I assume no.

    1. We have played it live before, but only a few times and we never recorded it. If we find the time, we might rectify that in the future 🙂

  9. We are on dates when many people will travel and take trains to our homes to spend Christmas with our parents, friends, acquaintances….
Look, I started singing, harmony, solfeo, piano when I was very young and the first memory that comes to mind when I was a kid are Simon And Garfunkel records. I have a lot of favorite songs from them but among my favorites is: Homeward Bound. Go home. Come back as far as you are to hug your family members…

“I’m sitting in the railway station
Got a ticket to my destination
On a tour of one-night stands my suitcase and guitar in hand
And every stop is neatly planned for a poet and a one-man band
    Homeward bound
    I wish I was
    Homeward bound
    Home where my thought’s escaping
    Home where my music’s playing
Home where my love lies waiting
    Silently for me…”

Sometimes for musicians Christmas are train season times and long journeys to meet their loved ones.

    1. You are off to a good start when your childhood soundtrack consists of Simon & Garfunkel songs 🙂 They’ve written so many songs that hit the nail on the head about things everyone experiences and goes through. In the most romantic, poetic way, “Homeward Bound” being one of them. We are sure many people will be humming it while driving/flying home to their families this Christmas.

      1. Today I received my handwriting and signed by Mona and Lisa…. I’m very excited about it. Thank you. I’m going to frame it and put it in my mini home music studio…. Thank you so much for treating all the fans like this and making us feel special. A big hug.

  10. I see Lampi Bampi is making sure you get the writing done today and watched Lisa Baking Yesterday. Its nice to see him along for the Christmas Advent Calendar thus year. After all he is as much a part of you as your music.
One of my favorite songs this time of year is Snoopys Christmas. In WW I they often had a truce at Christmas time for about a week. Also much of the Songs by the Royal Guardsmen (that sang about Snoopy ) were based, somewhat, on actual facts.
Your Song speaks to me ” I don’t have much money, but if I did, I’d buy a big house where we both could live”.
I think the one that touches me most comes from Time In A Bottle. “If I could save time in a bottle, the first thing that I’d like to do, is to save everyday till eternity passes, just to spend them with you” says to me how we all should feel about the one we love and are with.
Lastly is a song you may know rather well. “Won’t you listen now, gotta tell you how I feel”…. I love the song because you see someone that catches your eye and you want to feel them what you think of them, but you don’t want to embarrass yourself either.
Thanks Ladies for being back some special memories. ?❤??

  11. Day 5 already and still no Christmas cards written, every year I say i will get to them early, then don’t. Now I have this club to distract me – in a good way! As for lyrics I started to think about my favourites then got overwhelmed with so much music to choose from across the last 50+ years. However I have been very impressed by your writing and musical composition, ‘Once Upon A Time’ being one of my favourites which reminds me a bit of the kind of feeling George Harrison was trying for in ‘When We Was Fab’. As for Christmas songs, ‘All I want Christmas To Be’ is now my favourite Christmas song of all time, again great lyrics joined with your inimitable style of music and voice. I am not a member of any other internet club or forum, I have resisted joining anything for years but couldn’t help it once I found your music. I think it is a great site, a great club, and it is all down to your commitment to sharing your world with us, which certainly enables me (and from the other members contributions, I reckon everyone here) to feel good about sharing my world with you.

    1. I’m with you on that last part, Jim. I never expected to participate in any electronic communication other than e-mail, but the MLT club really feels like a family where everyone gets to know and care about everyone through the common bond of some remarkably enjoyable music.

      1. Thanks David, I am also enjoying reading everyone else’s comments, I’m impressed by how much time people are obviously putting into their contributions with song lyrics, recipes and reminiscences.

    2. Thank you Jim, we appreciate the trust. When we started this Club a little over a year ago, we were hopeful but of course had no way of knowing whether it was actually going to work. We are so happy and thankful that people have joined us here, that they made our music part of their lives, support the journey and have a great time hanging out here. We’re glad you joined us 🙂

  12. Hello Mona,
This reminds me of punishments at school. Copy 10 times, “I will not chat anymore in class … etc) Finally I’m glad I did not impose this to you.

But as you give us a bit of hope by saying “but we will make sure to do things like that or similar again in the future!” I remove everything I just wrote. Well, it was just a bad loser joke …
As for the most beautiful lyrics, the choice is difficult but two songs really marked me “Yesterday” and “Be” by Niel Diamond for the soundtrack of Jonathan Levingston Seagull.

    Lost
    On a painted sky
    Where the clouds are hung
    For the poet’s eye
    You may find him
    If you may find him
    There
    On a distant shore
    By the wings of dreams
    Through an open door
    You may know him
    If you may
    Be
As a page that aches for words
Which speaks on a theme that’s timeless
While the Sun God will make for your day
    Sing
As a song in search of a voice that is silent
And the one God will make for your way
    And we dance
    To a whispered voice
    Overheard by the sould
    Undertook by the heart
    And you may know it
    If you may know it
    While the sand
    Would become the stone
    Which begat the spark
    Turned to living bone
    Holy, holy
    Sanctus, sanctus
    Be
As a page that aches for word
Which speaks on a theme that is timeless
While the Sun God will make for your day
    Sing
As a song in search of a voice that is silent
And the one God will make for your day

  13. The MLT song that most speaks to me is “It’s Alright”, with its advocacy of following your own path despite a sea of voices demanding conformity.

In general I’m most impressed with lyrics that are just cleverly constructed, apart from any emotional connection. My favorite Beatles line is “Got to be good-looking ’cause he’s so hard to see.”

My lifetime achievement award for clever lyrics goes to satirist Tom Lehrer. Just listen to any track from his 1965 album “That Was the Year That Was”.

    1. Oh yes, so many funny/clever lines in “Come Together” … “He got feet down below his knee” – Lennon through and through.

I’ve downloaded some Tom Lehrer to check out during my run on Saturday – I’ve never heard of him. The song “The Wienerschnitzel Walz” caught my attention, I’ll play that one first 🙂

Also thanks for the words on “It’s Alright”.

  14. Those are nice fountain pens you are writing with 🙂 , and your handwriting looks wonderfully elegant. How do you both get so good at everything you do or touch? Love your idea of doing personally hand written lyrics for your original songs. All your lyrics in your songs are so poetic and inspired, and the presenting them in your own handwriting is just so special.

    From the Wide, Wide Land

    She’s losing all her memories
    Of faces that she used
    To know so well
    But still remembers
    All the melodies
    Of good old songs
    Whose names she cannot tell

    She’s singing
    With her eyes closed
    And you can almost
    Hear the band
If you could see her smiling
I think you’d know What she meant
    When she said
    Uhh, The wide, wide land…

When my mother got to the point in her dementia where she could hardy make a meaningful sentence, and only pronounce our names, and was in a state of anxiety most of the time, the only thing that would make her smile and laugh was when I use to take her out to the wide open country and farmlands in the car. It was like a momentary release from the state she was in. She would smile, brighten up, and I could see joy radiating from her face as she took in the wide open country unfolding in front of us as we drove along. That was her music, and when I heard this song for the first time, it hit me like a brick of emotions, because I could so relate to these magnificent lyrics. The angelic beauty of your singing in San Francisco together with beautiful melody and lyrics of The Wide, Wide Land was so incredibly inspiring and uplifting during my year of mourning after my mom passed away.

June is also another one I love as the lyrics say so much to me with much longing to have someone you love back.
June, can you tell me why
We had to say goodbye so soon
    Would you come along
    And bring my baby home

I could go on with more from Orange, but I should stop here.

    1. One of the few songs out of the 90’s that I found so beautiful, powerful and moving is REM – Everybody hurts.
When you’re sure you’ve had enough of this life,
      hang on.
      Don’t let yourself go
      Cause everybody cries
      Everybody hurts
      Sometimes….

    2. Hi Jung… Precisely why WWL lyrics hit home with me because of what happened to both my parents, it’s not easy with one it happens to, but both over a space of time but similarly health circumstances but different outcomes… Both late parents suffered major strokes, Mom’s was more severe, rendering her somewhat brain damaged to point of not able to do anything, her speech pretty much eradicated with exception of Yes and No and a few choice swear words… Her heautiful ability to still hum tunes stayed in tact while her ability to sing did not… Dad had a major stroke a few months following Mom’s passing, similar to hers but recovered somewhat, and had other health issues that complicated his well being, ended up getting dementia as a consequence and spent his last 8 yrs in a nursing home while Mom spent her final 10 yrs in a LTC hospital…. This song’s lyrics truly resonates for me but the video also reminds of Canada’s landscape too…

      1. Hi Jacki. Thanks for sharing. While our parents were just regular people in this world, to us their children, they were the world weren’t they. They will be in our hearts forever.

    3. Jacki, Jung, hearing these stories again filled us with so many emotions. We both thank you for sharing this with us. When we wrote down the lyrics for the Wide, Wide Land today, dad was in the room and we talked about our grandma (his mother) for a bit, once again remembering her passion and spirit. Those memories are so bitter sweet.
The people around us make us who we are, and losing them to cruel diseases like Alzheimer’s is almost impossible to fully comprehend and accept, no matter how much time passes. We are so sorry this happened to your parents. We think that our grandma would be smiling, if she knew that the lyrics that we wrote in her memory now bring comfort and reflection for other people. I think your parents would be happy to know that, too ♥

      1. Thank you so much Lisa for those kind words, it really means a lot. I think your grandmother’s love made you, your sister, and your father the wonderful human beings you are today, and the song you all so lovingly created and dedicated to your grandmother, will live on forever touching and moving people all over the world. Your grandmothers spirit lives in that song and she would be so proud of what you all have accomplished and continue to do, helping to touch people and make their lives better.

      2. Thank you so much Lisa for those kind words, it really means a lot. I think your grandmother’s love made you, your sister, and your father the wonderful human beings you are today, and the song you all so lovingly created and dedicated to your grandmother, will live on forever touching and moving people all over the world. Your grandmothers spirit lives in that song and she would be so proud of what you all have accomplished and continue to do, touching people and making their lives better.

      3. Thankyou Lisa, for your beautiful reply, and I too hope that both my parents and Jung’s Mom are looking at us with Spurit smiles and still being with us in their own ways…. Your thoughtful reply got me a tad teary eted, Thankyou for conveying as you had, it’s most meaningful for/to me ?☮️

  15. Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letterbox they tumble blindly as they make their way across the universe,Masterpiece. Speaking of a Masterpiece The first song I thought of as I read the question was Still a Friend of Mine. Its a great song to end an album (sometimes I listen to it first). I think its a Powerful song. Being a rookie in the MLT club I don’t know if its a collaboration or who the song is about? All I know is that its a Beautiful song. Also thats a very nice picture of you ladies. working hard as always. Have a Nice Day!

    1. Mona and Lisa have never said who the song is about, but I think for now its left to our own interpretation.

      1. Thank you for letting me know. its a Beautiful song just the same, I think its a song thats right up there with Imagine or God Only Knows. And of course Across the Universe.

      2. Certainly. Several fans call it Lisa’s Yesterday. Speaking of which check out the Twins Fabulous cover of Yesterday.
Also their Extraordinary cover of God Only Knows.

  16. Lyrics affect me a great deal, especially if their very descriptive, as I’m more a visual person/learner, when I hear/read/sense-feel lyrics to a song and it moves me because I can see it in my head, sense it, etc, well that matters for me, and that’s primarily why your music resonates so well with me, even the videos, it all conveys descriptively for/to me…. Now that I mention this, it occurs to me now, in that’s how I tend to write my poetry style/format, imagery /descriptive/narrowtive perhaps…. It all Inspires the Good and Postives…. ?☮️??

  17. This is a lovely picture of you ladies !
Advent calendar is great fun every day – can hardly wait for the musical ones!

I’ve loved In My Life since I first heard it and the meaning and emotions I feel hearing it only get stronger as I’ve gotten older
Every day is a blessing and a gift, especially when MLT are a part of it

    1. Such a great song. Those lyrics hit home more and more, with each year, with each new life experience. John was our age when he wrote it …
I remember being out with friends once when the song suddenly came on, a song I have heard hundreds of times before, and involuntarily welling up at its beauty and significance. If a song manages to do that in a cheerful, happy environment, that must prove it is something special 🙂

  18. It seems to me that Lampibampi wants to do some as well… ?
There are a few songs who’s words resonate deeply with me. When I first heard the words for “Once Upon a Time” I had to sit down. They really blew me away. Also “The Wide Wide Land”, “Still A Friend of Mine”, are personal for me.
“Let It Be”, specially considering how the song came about, at the time it did, is very meaningful for me since I went through a similar experience (many years later of course). The other song that is astounding to me is John Lennon’s “How?” The words are so deep and meaningful, especially apt in these times, and it’s sung in the most honest and humble way possible. John certainly had a way with words, but he also had a deep understanding of the world we live in.
    … I think I can spot those lyrics… ?

  19. This is a really great photo. I hope it didn’t involve Rudi standing on the stove or anything to get just the right angle, Team MLT has occasionally gone to some thought-provoking lengths to get the shot…and did you get LampiBampi to sign a release with all this additional exposure?
The last verse of Eagles “Lyin’ Eyes” always struck me as a lesson on how wise it is to be true to yourself, gender specificity aside:

My oh my, you sure know how to arrange things
You set it up so well, so carefully
Ain’t it funny how your new life didn’t change things?
You’re still the same old girl you used to be

And perhaps some of the most honest words ever put to music, see if you can guess who:

There’s one for you, nineteen for me

Thank you for this calendar, it really is a daily bright spot!

    1. You’re not far off! 😉 The creaking wood was a bit worrying but we got the shot!

We’re all for animal rights and make sure Lampibampi gets adequate time to relax between shoots, organic grass and vegetables and access to free wifi.

Declare the pennies on your eyes 😉

      1. No wonder Lampi Bampi is in such good shape for a lamb her age! Maybe we should call the calendar “The Adventures of Lampi Bampi”!
