Day 14

Lampibampi helping me pick out the gems. We like visiting the local record shops, looking for some good new old vinyl. Today we picked up records by The Move, Rod Argent, The Wings and “Timeless Flight” by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, a record off which we performed many songs live when we toured with them back in 2015.

There is something so ceremonial, almost solemn about purchasing an album and putting it on the turntable, listening to it from start to finish. The experience is much different and we’d say way more intense than skipping through random tracks on your Spotify playlist.

We thought about doing some short little videos for the Club where we talk about our recent favourites or albums and records that mean something to us and have a little relaxed, virtual chat about it. Is that something you’d like to see?

    1. Interesting collection there Tomás and they all look well used. Why am I not surprised your collection is Beatles heavy!

  1. I’m up for an MLT vinyl tutorial. I think I have well over 1000 vinyl LPs in my collection with maybe an additional 100 Beatles albums. Many bootleg Beatles albums and foreign released versions along with promotional releases. I used to find all sorts of neat stuff at estate sales and thrift stores that have accumulated. That 7 inch double EP version of Magical Mystery Tour I sent you all for Christmas was one of those gems I found. Hope you are enjoying it.

  2. Sounds like a neat idea! I had over 300 albums back in the day. Got rid of most of them which I’m kind of kicking myself in the butt for doing now. I wanted to make some more room for other stuff. Back in the day my drums took up 3/4 of my 9×12 foot room. I actually got rid of my bed to make room for the drums. All for the love of rock & roll! LOL!

      1. LOL! Those drummers are a different breed. Just look at your younger sister!

      2. LOL! Well, not IN it but in front of it actually. In a sleeping bag! It was 22″. The same kit in my avatar. That pic is from the early 80’s. That’s 55.88 cm for you metric people.

  3. An interesting take on the vinyl experience; I have yet to hear a vinyl recording that does not have at least a little hiss and pop to it. It makes it seem sort of customized, as in how home baked cookies are all a touch irregular in shape as opposed to the symmetrical cloning you get with a commercial cookie. You can tell someone made an effort to create something, and that creation will always include some imperfection, however miniscule, that lets one know that actual people were responsible for a new expression. Also: liner notes!
Hmmm…videos where MLT discuss what draws their attention, and what they find significant in music…would fall into the appointment computer time category!

  4. Wow! That would be Awesome! To have the Most Dynamic Voices in Music Today talking about music they like and where they get their inspiration would be a dream come true! Mona And Lisa you inspire so many! Thanks Ladies.
***Some Day perhaps listen to Chicago at Carnegie Hall. A Dynamic 4 Album Set! Still gives me chills to this day!***
Thanks Lampi for helping Lisa and Mona pick out some Classics!

  5. That’d be great!. I love music on vinyl…. I have many records (inherited from my parents) and then, later, bought by me in shops and local fairs…. I’d love to know what your favorite albums are. 🙂

  6. Those little short videos I think would be brilliant to hear your take and opinion about albums and music. Many of us, me included, here value your insight into all things music, so it would be great.

If Lampi Bampi could talk, Lampi would be just singing along with you both in joy these days, taking him along everywhere. Kind of reminds me of the Puff the Magic dragon story, with Lampi being a very happy Puff.

It seems a number of my friends have started getting turn tables again and playing their old vinyls or getting new ones. There is definitely something pleasing and right about listening to an album from beginning to end the way it was meant to be, instead of mixing them up with songs by other artists and albums without any rhyme or reason. It’s in a way a lot like those old classical symphonies or concertos where they come in 3 or 4 movements, meant to be played consecutively. In concerts, people don’t applaud until the entire thing is played. Listening to a vinyl of Sargent Peppers falls in that tradition, very ceremonial and right.

Had dinner tonight with a good friend. After eating more than what is natural, the waiter comes around with the dessert menu, and they had Sticky Toffee Pudding, so I am overly stuffed now, but it was sooooo good! 🙂

  7. Great idea.
I’m a bit of an audiophile as well, as I suspect Howard might be, so I’d also love to hear about the equipment you use for listening.

    1. Okay great, we still have lots of other projects to finish up but it’s something we’d love to try out in the new year. We will go over the equipment, too, when we film one of those videos.

      1. Excellent! I look forward to it. My equipment dates back to the seventies and early eighties!

  8. I have a huge vinyl collection and awesome system and turntable to play them on. So nice to feel the cover in your hand as the record spins. I still remember the very first album I ever purchased as an impressionable 15 year old in 1967, “Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band”. I spent many hours lying on the lounge room floor, following the lyrics on the back of the album as the record spun on our old radio/stereo console. There are so many old vinyl albums where I still remember the first track of each side. Something that is impossible with CDs, streaming and Spotify.

As for “a little relaxed, virtual chat about it. Is that something you’d like to see?” Are you kidding Lisa? This is the MLT Club! Of course we’d appreciate any opportunity to listen to you sharing your favourites. Bring it on! ?❤️

  9. PS, Digging LampiBampi’s comfort zone in your funky fab Purple Scarf…. Luv the photo… Rummaging through vinyls… Last time I did that was in the 80s during my teen years…. Lol?

  10. Sure…. My vinyl collection is still in storage as is the family stereo system… Lol… But yes, I’d enjoy hearing about your fave vinyls and what /why/how they affect you, etc, please indeed consider doing that for a future MLT Club thing????????
