Day 21

Going for our weekly 5k Saturday morning run. This has become such a routine for us that we can no longer imagine our weekends without it.

Only a few years ago we’d be out of breath from walking up the stairs 😉 But with consistent, regular exercise we really changed the way we think about sports, and it’s become an integral part of our day-to-day life. We never would have imagined that!

Part of us used to roll our eyes at people who were so focused on working out and the way their bodies looked. It seemed shallow and self-obsessed, and we never took the time to fully understand the appeal of exercise until we started exploring “fitness” ourselves.

There aren’t many things better for both your mental and physical health than looking after your body and putting yourself through some voluntary discomfort from time to time 🙂 At least, that’s how it’s been like for us. It increased our creativity, well-being and focus without a doubt!

What are your plans for the weekend?

  1. Jacki and her 105 yr old Great Aunt Dot ?… Pure Inspiration… Sorry for wonky edit of photo… The photo size limit /restriction on here didn’t allow for me to show the size I had edited smaller to fit but still too big for on here, so… This is what you have before you, my apologies for half faces… Lol????

      1. Thankyou Jung.. She’s truly an inspiration and a wee feisty firecracker of a gal… She may be slow moving physically in her limited walking but very much going on mental wise…. Thoroughly enjoyed my visit that day in August ?

  2. Speaking of health…. Let me introduce you to my Great-Aunt Dorothy (Dot) who had just turned 105 the day or two before I came to visit her when I took these pix ?

      1. Howard: Thankyou… She enjoys doing jigsaws, at least when I saw her in August, she was working on in her room on a table next to her bed. She enjoys taking part in activities, going out when feeling up to it, yes, she has some hearing /memory issues but on the whole, still active, cognitive in that she knows what’s going on & around her, enjoys being social, laughs and tells stories… I learned stuff about Grandma I never knew and details about other stuff that Grandma never talked much upon… Great lady… Feisty at 105.
Her Bday in August consisted of her 80 something yr old son taking her out for Bday dinner and luck at a casino…. The day I came to visit her, she was recooperating from her wild Bday adventure she had out day before… Casino fun… She was going on shopping mall trips in her 90s as I met her in mall one time and she recognized me?

  3. Speaking of health…. Let me introduce you to my Great-Aunt Dorothy (Dot) who had just turned 105 the day or two before our visit we had when I took these pix… Her outlook is of laughter, humour, smiling, doing jigsaws, crosswords, taking part in activities that she can still do or try to take part in… She can only walk limited with her walker now and uses her own portable /fold up wheelchair to get around elsewhere her walker can’t with help of the retirement home staff to help her out.
She had a”companion”that was about 5-10 yrs younger, but sadly he passed a year or two ago. She’s been a widow for eons previous. She was my Grandma Rea’s (my late Mom’s mom) baby sister, in fact youngest in the siblings of them all… Grandma was 2nd or 3 rd oldest I think. Aunt Dot outlived them all… Their Mom was a twin, identical if I can recall the photo I remember seeing?… She’s truly an inspiration… At 105 at looking fab… She was so in awe and fascinated with my phone and even moreso when I took our selfie and ones of her solo… She couldn’t get over how the phone could take photos and do all it does… Lol… Priceless – Precious ?… I’m sharing 2 photos, one of us here and one of her in separate post

  4. Physical exercise is good. Running, fitness, anything you do is always going to come in handy because it will make you feel better yourself. I can’t do strong physical exercise but I walk every day – at a good pace – 4 to 5 kilometers… and it’s good for the heart, my lungs and my mind stays alert.
We are preparing because on the night of the 24th we meet with my grandfather (who is 96 years old!) my uncle and my parents in the family home and we eat and share the night together… we’re preparing for the celebration.
In addition, here in Spain, the 22nd, tomorrow, is the day of the “Christmas Lottery” Draw…. and we’re all on the lookout for everything that revolves around that gambling draw to find out, tomorrow morning, who will go to sleep at night being something richer and somewhat more millionaire than yesterday….! 🙂

  5. Perhaps it’s time Lampi got his (her?) own page in the MLT Club? I suspect he may be engaged in all sorts of fun activities apart from the ones we see here! ML please let us know his time for the 5K……

  6. You can be old and still be active (with or without osteoarthritis). In fact the older we get the more we need it. I congratulate you Lisa for promoting sport.

    1. As for the weekend program, well, it’s playing with my Christmas present which has just arrived … I couldn’t wait until the 24th to open the box.

      1. No way, Angelo!! That is one hell of a Christmas present 😉 Let us know how you’re finding it. Did you get yours from a local dealer or was it shipped all the way from Australia?

      2. ction. It was so difficult to find and buy one that I almost believed in a curse … It finally arrived after a long trip from the Blue Mountains (west of Sydney). I somehow assume that I saved her from desiccation. Actually, I bought all these cut-electroacoustic guitars because of the two of you (I also expect any day, the Mona’s EM425C, also saved from the flames…), with the aim of re-creating through a beautiful collection of guitars, your musical journey. Not being a stage guitar player, I have never been convinced by these cutaways. The sound is so much less rich, less beautiful than the corresponding full shape guitars. For example, before I understood that it was the “Performer” that I had to find, (thanks to Mona for the photo of the rosette tag) I thought it was an EM225c and inadvertently I found and bought an M225. Well this guitar that I bought by mistake is the one that has the most beautiful sound for me, the one I play with all the time. It is the one that is just behind on the photo and which is also equipped with the beautiful Monalisa Orange strap. Of course, when you plug in the “Performer”, thanks to its AP-5 system then it reveals all its qualities. Who knows, if I continue to follow your example, maybe one day I can use it for what it is intended. Merry Christmas!

      3. That’s interesting that you find the M225 the best sounding so far. From memory, the M225 was the bottom of the range, so just goes to show there’s more to a guitar than the price.

      4. Hi Angelo. Congratulations on finally getting there. I hope it it’s the one you were looking for. I’ll be interested to hear your report.

    2. Nice picture Angelo. I use to love cycling and I should get back to it. MLT certainly promote fitness which is a great thing. Lisa said in one of the early forum posts that “the human body was designed to move” so to keep it operating optimally you got to run or be active. So profound!

      1. Hey Jung, jump on the bandwagon, let’s follow Lisa’s example! Be fit and stay healthy..

  7. I bought a looper pedal. Never used them before. And this is my plan for this weekend to have fun with it. This why I went to the gym yet on Friday. Summertime I do jogging as well.

      1. Actually, my plan is to use it for setting up other pedals. Since I can not play and tune verniers at the same time. Looper can replace a couple of hands 🙂

    1. Loop Pedals are addictive! You can get lost in playing with them forever. Which means we’ll probably see you again in 3 weeks 😉

  8. Ok, based on your relentless good examples and those of my own very fit daughter, I will put regular exercise back into my weekly routine. Thanks for the inspiration!

  9. Because I don’t drive (never got my driver’s license), it’s walking and taking the city transit buses for me and I get my cardio workout going up/down stairs where I can, and in my own place, as I have a set of stairs going upstairs from down at my door of my apt unit…. Lol… I enjoy walking, just not in Winter as much… Not a Winter fan… My idea of Winter is One day… A nice snowy but mild Xmas Day, then resume to Spring/Summer weather, Thankyou very much… Lol

  10. I love Lampi Bampi’s little head band! A question just popped to mind seeing Lisa ready to launch. In a 100 meter dash, I wonder who would come across the finish line first? Mona, Lisa, or Lampi? 🙂

    1. But like with the hare and the tortoise, it’s the staying power and concentration of those long distance runs that count. There’s many a half marathon I’ve done where young sprinters have charged off at the start ahead of everyone, only to be run down by the half way mark (as they run out of puff), by more experienced old hands. This is something you train for. I think Lisa is in it for the long haul.

      1. Howard, speaking of the hare and tortoise, I think snails know that story well too.

  11. Despite Lisa’s fab outfit (jacket included), I wouldn’t count Lampi out just yet…he could have a trick up his … shoe?

As for me I’m going to fit in all the listening I can to “All I Want Christmas To Be” before Christmas is over. ???

  12. I am getting ready for my knee replacement surgery Monday. I will be getting things ready, and I will be making my Nuts and Bolts for Family too. Maybe for someone else too?
Speaking of excersise, I used to run 2 miles every day. Took about 15 minutes. Now I try to walk 2 miles everyday. Between 4 and 6k steps every day.
I think Lampi Bampi deserves a head start. ?

    1. Good luck with the surgery Richard. I recently asked my doctor about the same thing and he said I still wouldn’t be able to run with a knee replacement, so I’m holding off until my arthritis gets worse. I also think Lampibampi deserves a head start. I don’t think that shoe is going to help. Maybe roller skates or a skateboard would though!

    2. Best wishes for a speedy recovery Rick. My brother finally replaced his about a year ago after suffering with it for many many years. He’s literally like a new man now.

    3. We wish you all the best for your surgery! Fingers crossed all goes smoothly and you’ll recover soon. 🙂 And good on you for doing all that walking despite the dodgy knee!

  13. Do Run Run the Do Run Do Run…. Cue: Chariots of Fire movie theme song or Queen’s We Are The Champions…. Luv LampiBampi’s running gear… Lol… Happy 5K–ing
I’m working and getting ready for Xmas with Xmas gift bagging, last minute gift shopping Bday gift for my niece, makingmy renowned fudge for Xmas Day and Boxing Day as I’ll spend both days with family???

  14. I had to slow down a bit after a car accident, but i do take the dog for at least a 4km walk everyday, and run 2km five days a week, and i can still do that in 8 minuttes, so considering my age, it`s not so bad

  15. I stopped running several years ago because it was making my knee hurt. I try to do some walking or bike riding most days. Weather looks favorable to walk another 15 km or so this weekend! But I have to fit that around a music jam on Saturday.

  16. My plans for the weekend? I’ll be doing ALL of my Christmas shopping. Ugh.

I’m a recent convert to moderate exercise myself. I’ve been somewhat overweight most of my adult life, and two years ago I was diagnosed with high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Sensing my own mortality, I started going for a brisk 70-minute walk in my neighborhood almost every evening. In seven months I dropped nearly 30 kg, and I’ve kept it off by continuing to walk.

Not only does walking make me feel better, but it gives me lots of down time just to think. For the last few months I’ve devoted a great deal of that thinking to MLT music and the conversations we’ve all had in these forums. Life is pretty good.

I wonder, though, if Lampi Bampi knows the rules about staying in your own lane.

    1. I’m with you there David on the daily walking thing. For the last year, instead of lunch, I’ve been walking for an hour during the lunch breaks, and I feel much better and less stressed. I’ve heard the experts say a minimum 40 mins of walking a day can make a huge health improvement for everyone.

    2. Oh wow David, that’s fantastic!!! And I can totally relate to making the walking/running time your thinking time. That’s the thing I found myself enjoying most when I first got into running. It became my “me” time, to clear my head or think about new ideas. It was like a little reset button every day to put things into perspective. It’s funny how getting out in nature and physical activity can do that. Keep it up!! 🙂

  17. Today has cooled down to 26 after 4 days in the 40s (celsius) here in Adelaide. The smoke from the bushfires has cleared so I’ve got all the windows open to air out the house and catching up on some watering. Will go for a nice long walk after tea to catch up for the last few days when I’ve been bunkered down!
Funny heat related story. Part of my backyard is a concrete slab exposed to the sun. Frogs and lizards live underneath this slab. They burrow under and make it their home. Yesterday afternoon in the 46 degree heat I saw a frog hopping away from the slab looking for a place to hide. I think he was trying to escape from being cooked alive because the slab was very hot, too hot to stand on in bare feet. So for the first time in my life I set up the sprinkler and watered a concrete slab!!!! The things we do!
Got a gig tomorrow afternoon, looking forward to that.

    1. We must avoid burnt frog toes at all cost!!! Thanks for looking after the little ones 😉 And I hope you had a great gig tonight!

  18. On the subject of fitness and sport, I see you’ve come a long way. My very first questions to you when you started this fabulous Club, included asking, among other things, whether you played sport while at school in Adelaide. Mona’s response was ‘if you count carrying a guitar case to school everyday’. Priceless!

I’m glad you have made exercise a regular part of your lives, but being the clever things you are, I knew you’d get there. It’s true what they say “a healthy mind in a healthy body”. I hope Rudolf and Michaela also find the time for regular exercise. They certainly look like they do.

  19. Wow you ladies are dedicated impressive fitness troopers for sure to continue your 5K weekly run through the winter. Way to go! After hearing this, this weekend I think I will do a 5K walk around the lake near where I live and look at all the Christmas lights they have up. ? I can certainly attest to the importance of taking good care of one’s health in order to fulfill one of my dreams to travel the world. Cant do that if I lose my health and strength. Thanks for the fitness inspiration!

  20. Great to hear you are enjoying the benefits of regular exercise Mona and Lisa. I was one of those type of people obsessed with marathon training and also triathlons. Unfortunately age and arthritis have caught up with me though and I can’t run anymore.

Your Friday Kinks Electro Duo Session video was a doozy! Can’t wait for your Xmas day video. You’ve set the bar pretty high though.

I’m currently in Sydney pet minding. Today I’ve ventured to Sydney Harbour to avoid the 43 degree Celsius heat of the suburbs. Might even take a ferry ride. The sky is very smoky from all the bush fires still raging in the Blue Mountains.

I know you’ve had a heap of Kinks requests already. Well I’m throwing in another one. “Don’t Ever Change”. Pretty well what I think of the MLT!

I notice this post also has the title Photo fehlt noch that yesterday’s post initially had. ?❤️
