Day 5 – Walking In the Air (Early Access)

Our Christmas video 2020 is here!

It took us quite some time to finish the editing for this one but we can finally say … “Walking In The Air” is ready!

We had released this song on our CHRISTMAS album last winter and decided to choose it for this year’s MLT holiday video.

As you can see we did lots of layering and blending with this video project and ventured out into the more abstract realms. It was a nice change from cutting the Cavern Club videos and Duo Sessions which are all very much “based in reality” 🙂

The video will see the light of day for the rest of our audience tomorrow when it will “go public” on our YouTube channel but we wanted to give it at least a day of early access to MLT Club members only.

Tomorrow we will change the video settings from “unlisted”  to “public” which will put it in the subscription boxes of our YouTube subscribers and make it viewable to everyone. But that doesn’t mean that you cannot already comment on the YouTube video itself which is today’s challenge!

Please leave a comment on the actual YouTube video on the YouTube platform! Then write us underneath this post what your YouTube/Google username is or, alternatively, copy your comment in here again, so we can count the points! 🙂

  1. For some reason my name didn’t show, but the “wicked awesome” comment is me. This was the 6th or 7th time I’ve watched this video.

  2. So here is my review on Youtube : Needle Needle – “This video is definitely hitting on all cylinders!! Its a gorgeous video to watch, your talents as musicians are on full display, and the great harmony in your voices …. magical. Thanks for sharing this with the world!” This is a true gem!!

  3. Celtic Women meets Johnny Cash with this Ghost Riders in the Sky styled arrangement. I love this song’s arrangement so much. So much energy in it, and yet such a peaceful blend of instrumentation and of course the great vocals that only the MonaLisa Twins can provide. It’s one of my favorites from the Christmas Album.

Username is the same as my name

  4. I commented as Roger Penn, but here’s the text:
“I’m a poet, yet I am having a hard time finding adequate words to express my enraptured awe at this video. The music is unbelievable as it is, but the video just transcends sensual experience. The footage is breathtaking, the imagery sublime, the edits Oscar-worthy, and then of course you put two of the most beautiful people on the planet in the middle of it all, and I just sit here transfixed as I watch it again and again. The fact that 10 people already don’t like it just renders me flabbergasted. Over the last half-century, I’ve been enamored of a lot of music by many different artists, but the day I discovered MLT was truly one of the most serendipitous blessings in my life.”

  5. I ardently agree with Jung’s quote, “As time goes on you continue to break the ceiling yet again and come out with this wonder.” With such a brilliant combination of your beautiful music and and superb video, how can one not feel supremely entertained?

I have known for some time that Mona and Lisa are truly gifts from God for which I am truly thankful for. As always, “Thanks for the Memories.”

  6. Rick Twomey has left a comment on the YouTube prior to even knowing it was an Advent Calendar challenge….but briefly last year when you came out with the Christmas album this song intrigued me because it was so different thus becoming my favorite song on the album…I even did a search on it to find out the history of the song…I wondered what kind of video you guys would come up with for this song and boy was I surprised when I first saw it this morning…the beautiful scenic and winter of nature and how you were floating above it all…I LOVE IT…Thank You for this video !!

    1. You’re ahead of the game, thanks! 😉
It was quite different to what we usually do but we enjoyed the challenge. And the same goes for the video. It gave us the freedom to be quite abstract with it which is something we hadn’t done in a while!

  7. While you’re here, check out some other MLT videos, and what you’ll find is high-end production values, particularly in editing. An elevated bar to clear, but this video sails over it, a beautiful augmentation to vocals emblematic of the Monalisa Twins, again as you will discover in all of their work. Nailed it again, Mona & Lisa. I thought of putting an exclamation point at the end of the last sentence, but the more I experience their work, the more typical excellence becomes so I’ll have to save the “!” for when they don’t come through. Looks like SHIFT 1 is in for a lonely time.

    1. I have 13 friends and relatives that since the whole “Live” album came about I’ve been delivering to then via messenger a video once a week…so they have the 3 vids that have been released to the general public and last week I sent them the vid All I Want Christmas To Be ..tomorrow they’ll get this Walking Through The Air…I already sent plenty of personal stuff to them today as today my daughter’s Birthday Breakfast was today and sent pics of The that from the Waffle House in Euless, Tx..her bday is actually tomorrow…a Pearl Harbor Birthday Girl for December 7….I did have my MonaLisa Twins hat on in the pic and pointed it out in messenger as a “point of interest “….my friends probably think I’m nuts getting so worked up over a couple musicians at age 70…but Hey Hey Hey what can I say…how about The MonaLisa Twins are The Beatles of the 21st Century…to be specific…Mona and Lisa are the John and George of today’s music ❤️❤️❤️❤️

  8. Youtube comment ( my user name is Tommyr ):

Dreamlike scenery and those fantastic MonaLisa Twins harmonies make for a GREAT holiday video! Mona doing triple duty and Lisa on the strat! Their Christmas album is a must have!

    1. Hi Eric! The video was only accessible through this page before it went public on the channel. Thanks for the comment – we realise now that the song isn’t as commonly known in the US as it is over on this side of the Atlantic. One of the best known versions of the song was sung by a 15-year old boy who shares your last name, Aled Jones! 🙂

  9. name: Kenneth Plasa / e-mail: kplasa@gmail.com
“Wow, the video gives great seasonal vibes with all those scenic views, especially I like the layered parts with nature and your performance – the song as well as your rocking interpretation adds up to a very artsy music video”

  10. My name on YouTube is Ivan Strelets. To what I have already written there I would like also to add, that Sasha says this video is now her favourite among all the MonaLisa Twins works. She immediately recognised some cartoon about a snowman (which myself I have no idea about, haha).

  11. Tomas Calvo

What a COOL and FANTASTIC video! I’m watching it over and over in 4K and it’s STUNNING! I loved the shot of the horses running in the snow, and all the images blending into one another are just AMAZING! I love this song, it dumfounded me from the first bass line, and it’s so much better than the original, I feel a hint of Johnny Cash riding in the heavens. Look no further for the definition of AWESOME ???? ???? ???? ???? ????

  12. This video is completely enchanting. Mona’s lead vocal is pure angelic tone, and I can never decide which of the girls singing lead and the other harmony I like more; both uniquely spot on pitch and clarity. The scenes and fading so wonderfully match the music at each transition- and boy has Papa Rudi gotten even more expert with his drone camera. Impossible for me to stop the video from a continuous loop because everything about it is so magically captivating. And my favorites Mona and Lisa – ladies, you have never looked more beautiful than in this video. God bless you all and all your talent!

  13. OMG! What a gorgeous feast for the eyes and ears! Alps, I presume, but where? Can’t wait for the YouTube release so I can share. Meanwhile, I shared this still.

  14. Hi Mona and Lisa.. I loved the video.. Walking in the air is one of my favourites songs from the fantastic CHRISTMAS album.. now with the fantastic video we can fly with you… thanks for the walk..I left my comment on YouTube.. my username is “Antonio Lima” but… Just look for a badge with a Rickenbacker and a Duo Jet on an orange background… It’s me.. You guys are beautiful .. thanks.

  15. You Tube comment:
Even before one word is sung, the rhythm guitar, bass line and percussion levitate you off the ground and start swooping you forward into the air. Then, ethereal voices softly permeate into your consciousness and before you know it you are soaring into the night high above. What a ride! This is one of the most sublime and compelling musical videos I have experienced. So beautiful it leaves you suspended above the world in wonder and peace. What a precious Christmas gift. Thank you MLT!

  16. Has anyone besides me noticed the girls have beautiful harmonies. I have never heard that song before. Another classic cover. Keep em coming!!!

    1. Oh that’s nice, please tell your daughter we say hi and we wish your whole family a groovy and relaxing holiday season!

  17. Like many of us here, my YouTube name is the same as here (Lynn Newcomb). If I chose to use an alias it would be “eltenukem” (pronounced “L T Newcomb”).

  18. Wow – this one blew me away! Wonderful music and a fabulous video. Was most of the scenic part shot in Austria by Herr Wagner and his drone helicopter? I’m hoping you do a follow-up on the making of this video.

    Here’s my YouTube comment:

  19. Just left my comment on YouTube as “Greg Delaney”. I am so glad that this song is part of the Advent Calendar. I’d never before heard the son and the video is excellent!

  20. Wow! I just received this cd about a month ago, and Walking In The Air is one of my favorite tracks (if I could even pick just one fav). This video is amazing. The scenery is absolutely beautiful, and the way Mona and Lisa are transposed over this scenery works wonderfully. Great song. Great video. The MonaLisa Twins keep knocking it out of the ballpark!!

  21. And here’s my YouTube comment

How do they keep on doing this? Everything they touch becomes fresh and reborn even old classics that some people now disparage. Their up tempo treatment of Walking in the Air loses none of its beauty or gentleness but gives it some punch. Watching the video for the second time I realised at the end that for the preceding three and a half minutes I had been so enraptured by the whole concept that I had been totally unaware of anything going on around me. The beauty of the landscapes, the girls, the music (vocals and instrumentation) and the graphics blend together into indescribable bliss.

  22. What a beautiful Video of such a lovely song! This has been worth the wait and thank you so much for doing this song. This shows how beautiful this world is in such a dark time of our lives with the Covid. You certianly picked a great time to post this and for all of us to see how beautiful each production the MLT team can put out. As in my posts this song stuck out to me last year when I bought your Christmas Album and thru the year I played this song because you covered this song so beautiful and made this your own. Once this comes out public, I am sharing this with my choir director at my church to show him how beautiful this song is versus the original. Not taking anything away from the original, it is a beautiful piece , but your version is just as beautiful and enjoyable to listen to. Once again you take us along this journey with you and love every minute of it. Thank you and the MLT for this video and god bless

  23. Such a wonderful video! Perfect production values by Papa Rudi! And a lovely song too! This is why I joined the MLT club! Everyone should!

  24. I left this comment on youtube-
This turned out to be one of my favorites on the Christmas album.
I had never heard it before.
This year I looked it up and see it was written for a cartoon short “the snowman” (which I also hadn’t heard of)
I’m going to watch that too.
As usual, this version and video are amazing
    My favorite!!

  25. Whoops, in my awe of #MLTBuzzLuvGroovified on seeing the video … I forgot to add this was my YouTube comment, below here…I’m Jacki Hopper on YouTube.

  26. Completely magical and enchanting, whimsical , etc. as I was hoping this to be, as the song screams out just that. It reminds me of Canada in British Columbia and Alberta and other Prairie provinces , Ontario, Quebec, The Maritimes, of their mountains, etc. Quite majestic… your creative concept compliments this so perfectly. Prior to hearing this song on your album , I was not aware of this song but I loved it from the get-go when I first heard it on your Xmas album last year. Kudos to a most lovely, exilerating video that intertwines emotions, nature, harmony, music, beauty etc . ????❤

  27. Commented as Richard Holmes

“Nicely done. The song strikes me a bit oddly, though. I guess it’s popular in the UK? Wikipedia says the film it’s from “has become a seasonal favourite on British and Finnish television”. You’ve recorded it, and tomorrow Lisa Rea of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is including it in a holiday play-along video. I never heard it in the US, though, until I heard your recording… and given its lack of any explicit lyrical ties to Christmas, just some references to snow, it seems odd as a Christmas song for those who haven’t grown up with it. Nice song, but it doesn’t say “Christmas” to me!”

    1. In 1982 the Children’s animation movie “The Snowman” was released based on famous British author Raymond Briggs children’s book with the same name. It’s really a heartwarming story about a little boy and the friendship with a snowman he made and how things and people we love aren’t with us forever. The animation was nominated for an Oscar. For the scene in the movie where the snowman takes the little boy in his hands and flies to the North Pole to visit Santa, they used “Walking In The Air” written by classical composer Howard Blake. This beautiful song appeared in a number of classical albums I own over the years. Because the movie is synonomous to Christmas, the song is as well, but it can stand as both a Christmas song and song for all seasons, which is awesome because you should enjoy MLTs brilliant masterpiece rock interpretation all year round.

Anyway, a year after the debut 1982 release of the movie, they did an alternate version with David Bowie introducing the movie, and starting in 1983, the networks played this version. The original had Raymond Briggs do the introduction scene, but they wanted someone with a little more charisma, and man David Bowie can make you believe the Snowman is real. I think David may have a true childhood reference to a snowman friend, and perhaps is why he did it.

      From NME article:

We’ve not stopped rediscovering all the wonderful things David Bowie did since he left us in January: all year, tributes have continued to attest to his wit, innovation and multifarious accomplishments. One that seems to have slipped past us until now, though, is the time he was involved in the most festive animation of all time. This, of course, is Channel 4’s 1982 adaptation of Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman, memorably soundtracked by Howard Blake, and on which the 13-year-old chorister Peter Auty – now an operatic tenor – sang Blake’s famous composition ‘Walking In The Air’.

Bowie’s part – cut from the US version – was simple but crucial: introducing viewers to the surreal story in which a snowman comes to life. “This attic’s full of memories for me,” he begins. “We spent all our summers by the seaside and in winter at home, by the fire,” he goes on, wandering about the attic and retrieving a scarf.

“Frost on the window,” he recalls, “and snow. Snowballs and making snowmen. One winter I made a really big snowman and he got this scarf for me. You see, he was a real snowman. That winter brought the heaviest snow I’d ever seen. The snow fell steadily all through the night. And when I woke up, the room was full of light and silence, and I knew then it was to be a magical day.” Always a storyteller – who else could have done such a magical job?

  28. Incredible production quality! The awesome scenery perfectly compliments the twins’ spot-on harmonies! You never cease to impress!

  29. I’m continually astonished by how gifted you are, Mona and Lisa, not just musically, but artistically. Thank you for blessing us with your gifts. This is one I’ll watch over and over and over. I had to comment via my daughter’s Youtube account. (She loved it too by the way!) I’m attaching a screenshot. Her account name is Meriel Reed but the comments are mine!

  30. I have this your Christmas album and I loved this arrangement of this song from the beginning. You have beaten my earlier favorite version by Nightwish even they are my countrymen ! What becomes to this video it´s very beautiful. The images of snowy landscapes bring real Christmas atmosphere though we here in Southern Finland probably will have another “black” Christmas in a row.

    1. We most probably won’t have white Christmas here either but we’ll keep our fingers crossed for Finnish snow for you. When we played there the first time in Tampere there was a little bit of snow … but that was in March.

  31. I added my YouTube comment as johnnypee
I just love this arrangement. When I first heard the opening of this song, I immediately put it on my ski tunes list. I can not wait to go skiing with this song in my earbuds. The acoustic guitar and light drumming are perfect adrenalin triggers. The video looks fantastic. The sharp landscape images look great on my big screen. It’s so appropriate to see your angelic voices surrounded by clouds. Your seamless editing puts others to shame. I love that “Lisa” guitar sound. The guitar solos are perfect. Endless applause starts now. Bravo!

    1. JP, I can just imagine you doing a few somersault maneuvers while gracefully skiing down the slopes while listening to Walking In The Air. 🙂

  32. Phenomenal! In all aspects! The MonaLisa Twins have brought a new relm of possibilities for future videos. Their vision and insight will set the industry on its ear. Starman and Once Upon A Time led to this Awsome Outer World Experience, but Walking In The Air has taken it to another level, and thrown down the Gautlet. Well Done Ladies and Team MLT! ???? ???? ???? ⛄

  33. Youtube comment as NIGEL MORTIMER : ‘Absolutely wonderful! I love the almost ethereal feel to the video and music. You really get a sense of ‘flying’ over those snow capped mountains too. Very creative and a hit for this Christmas time and many more in the future.

  34. Youtube comment: My God, your Walking In the Air is absolute genius!  You make music so unimaginably beautiful! You take an old beautiful classical piece, and transform it into an upbeat rock version blending in beautiful guitar riffs, and layering in your vocals and harmonies that sound just sublime! As time goes on you continue to break the ceiling yet again and come out with this wonder. Your Walking In The Air truly makes me feel like I can walk in the air it is so beautiful and uplifting, and this video just blows my mind. Love those ice fields and mountain tops!  Absolute genius arrangement, brilliant video, makes my soul float away into the clouds. I am left breathless, I feel tears of joy. Thank you so much for this!

    1. Jung, your comments are spot on. It really does blow your mind. Team MLT has outdone themselves, and future videos are going to be very hard to top. Knowing Team MLT as we do, no doubt they will.
