  1. As of family of 8 I had 5 brothers we did a in home photo and put it on our Christmas cards that we sent out every year.

  2. We do one at every major holiday we get together (at least until March 2020). Hopefully we can do it again soon, maybe Easter?

When my son was born, we named him after my Dad (Benjamin), so we had several years worth of Ben & Ben pictures, up to about age 5. When he graduated from High School, for his senior photos, we had another Ben and Ben picture, but this time, my Dad sat on his lap!

  3. No, we usually only take snapshots.
But my grandma still has a couple of boxes with very old pictures including her engagement portrait and so on. I love to look at these.

  4. There is no established tradition, but family portraits are usually taken at weddings – much easier now that everyone has phone cameras!

  5. That was quite the magic trick with the candle! And Lisa is gets it right again. Tea Gods must like her.
As for family portraits, my family has spread out over 3 continents, last tine we were all together was 10 years ago and no plans for years to come, but we do take pictures when we’re together as it’s a momentous occasion.
Here are some of my family pictures from the 80’s, the 1880’s to be more specific.

    1. Even that old pictures can be colorized and the better resolution – the better picture and here they are – done in under 2 minutes.

  6. Every 10th anniversary my wife and I go to a photo shop that has costumes and dress up as a bar maid and an outlaw. We’ve got 4 of them so far!

  7. From the late 1960’s through early 1970’s, my mother insisted on annual studio family portraits that ended up in our church’s congregation directory. She would also take me and my siblings to a studio for children’s portraits to enclose with Christmas cards. Here is one of me and my two sisters from 1964.

      1. Thanks, Leif! I was pretty impressed with what you did with your first grade photo. I’ve wondered what that coat I was wearing really looked like!

  8. We never had professional photos taken, but have a fair share of homemade pics. A few years ago, I asked if we (my folks, sister, brother-in-law, my nephew and his wife and kids) could take a couple pics in themed clothing, just for kicks and posterity. Ladies in “Cats in Space” t-shirts, men in International Harvester (a farm machinery company) shirts. Here’s the result: Hope you don’t find them too cheesy! ????

  9. Hi Mona Hi Lisa, hello everyone, In my family, photos of all festive events, birthdays, Easter and Christmas were kept in albums and some frames…but after cell phones and electronic cameras appeared. we store everything in the memory of some device. that old tradition ended.

  10. Goodnight, congratulations to the lucky winners
Some of the family photos from when we were children are kept by my mother in a box and from time to time, we would see it when we met at Christmas.

The last family photo we took at Christmas was 12 years ago which was the last time we could meet and it is kept in the same box

  11. We never do family portraits, neither in a photo studio nor at home. When I’m in a studio, then only for getting photos for driver’s license, passport etc.

  12. We never did a professional photo, but we took a lot of individual pictures especially after digital came along. I had a Polaroid Swinger in my youth, but most of those pictures were so tiny you couldn’t really do a group. I have some old 8mm silent films I took in the 70s, but they are so jerky it’s hard to concentrate,

  13. My cousins, siblings, and other relatives took pictures, but no formal studio Christmas family portrait. We never saw most of these pictures, until recently.

  14. My Uncle was a photographer. We’re lucky to have a lot of photos growing up. We try group photos at family gatherings. I’m single and don’t have kids. I usually don’t take a lot of photos.

  15. I took my boys to JC Pennys portrait studio at the mall up until they were about 5 then school pictures took over that was in the 1980’s now we take pictures of the family with our phones and I have to say the pictures are a million times better.

  16. When my kids were home, I took a picture of them in the backyard in a big pile of leaves that I raked up. 10 years later, I took another picture of them in the yard in another pile of leaves in the same positions. The plan was to do that every 10 years. Sadly we lost our oldest son 2 years ago. So we started a new one with the grandsons on Christmas Eve.

  17. When I was a child, we used to o visit Santa at a local Sears & Roebuck store. That was our version of a shopping mall before there was a mall. My parents would spring for a photo package. They were nice B&W prints. I think I posted one last year. After my older siblings started to age out and filled me in on the Santa secret, that tradition ended.

Like I have seen others comment everyone takes so many pictures nowadays with their phones, that there is not as much posing going on. Occasionally my wife can catch everyone at the right time.

    JP

  18. It was never a tradition, though for a few years Mom would take group pictures of my siblings and I. There were lots of pictures taken at family get-togethers.

  19. I have never taken family Christmas portraits. As a matter of fact, if I didn’t see one being taken in the show “Frasier”, I wouldn’t know if it was a thing.

  20. I WANT THE PICTURE!

When I was growing up in a prior century, we had occasional studio portraits, but it’s been a long time now.

  21. Sadly, I haven’t had but one photo taken with my (ex) wife and my twin girls and that was so long ago. As a child I never had one photo taken with my family together, but, my sisters were 20 and 23 years older than me so they were grown and scattered before I came along. So… my tradition is NO tradition!!! LOL It’s a nice thought though.

  22. Sadly we never carried on the tradition of family photos later in life but I still have many pictures of us growing up. We had many aunts and uncles and cousins but they were scattered all over the country so we didn’t get together that often. Most everyone is gone now. Old pictures are fun to look at.

  23. The only time we do family portraits is at big occasions, weddings, Christenings and that kind of thing. Although all of our family live within 20 odd miles of each other, it’s the only time we’re all dressed up smart!

  24. My mom always made sure that my father, older brother and myself had matching outfits. It’s amazing I turned out okay! 😉

  25. We had some family portraits taken at a studio back when my son was young and I was still married… but not a thing these days.

  26. My family had a few formal photographs taken over the years. There is one that I particularly remember because it became known as the “Big Hair” picture! It was taken in 1971 and appeared on our family’s Christmas card. Except for my brothers with their brush cuts, the rest of us had extraordinarily big hair. I guess it was the fashion! Makes me cringe now though!

    1. The thing about older pictures – specially color photos – is that they fade – so here is an example of recoloring a color picture – it freshes up the picture

    2. It’s absolutely lovely Jeanette and I’m pretty sure Mona and Lisa will be tickled to see this. At least the fellows weren’t wearing high sheen lime green or psychedelic polyester leisure suits with super wide ties and oversize lapels that used to cover coat pockets and stick out the sides. LOL…

      Very nice.

  27. Not a tradition, but I try to round up the family on Christmas day for a group photo. Honestly though, it’s like herding cats. People aren’t used to posing for photos anymore. Gone are the days of film cameras. Most photos these days seem to be ad hoc point and click via a smartphone. So I’m finding it a challenge as the years go by, but I’ll keep at it!

  28. We don’t take pictures worthy of the name portrait , but we make a photo calendar each year with the highlights of the past one, with photos of all sorts of occasions , which is definitely fun to look back at .

    1. We do the same thing, but the last couple of years have been more individual or very small group pictures, due to Covid.

      1. Hi Ron yeah it is quite a challenge with covid so badly diminishing the number of events to make enough pictures fun and varied for the calendar. But let’s say we’re up for the challenge ????

  29. We don’t exactly have a tradition. But every few years we try to get a family portrait done. Our last one was three years ago before our youngest grandchild turned one. With our fourth grandchild expected in June, I suppose we will want a new portrait a year or so after that.

  30. We have a family tradition of taking all the aunts/uncles and cousins taking pictures during our Christmas reunion. They have all gone to heaven, but the cousins keep the tradition. My nephew, who is a photographer, takes the pictures now.
Bye the way, Mona I like your how you have your hair. And I thought I saw Sweet Lorraine for minute there. But I blinked and Lisa came back. Stay groovy, and peace be.

  31. We use to dress up as elves as kids for a Xmas photo every year until we could no longer fit into the clothes especially when my trousers split open

  32. My family never did a family portrait picture when we we’re kids, but know that I pretend to be all grown up my twin brother & myself take pictures of each of us opening our gifts to each other. Unfortunately we are the only ones left in our family so living together & always spending the holidays is even more special (never taken for granite). I’m sure that you guys know how special the bond is between twins.

  33. Sadly, there was no portrait tradition in my family when I was growing up in the 50’s and 60’s. I don’t even have a copy of what few black and white photos were taken casually either. The absence of such treasures weigh heavily on me as I get older. When my kids were born I invested in a good Olympus 35mm camera and a Sony VHS video recorder and took pictures of everything our family did! I remember how much work it was lugging that Sony around (it was very large and heavy) and spending all my energy trying to record what was going on, at the expense of just enjoying the event, but I’m glad now that I did. I recently converted all those tapes to digital and its a blast watching all the memories that were being made. Thank you for sharing all the wonderful photos and videos that everyone in your beautiful family takes. It truly makes me feel that I am a part of it. 🙂

  34. I didn’t participate in family photos until I married. When we were together for Christmas we would go to a photo shop in the mall to get a family photo with matching colors. To be honest, I felt weird doing it. These days we use Thanksgiving as our family get-together and take a candid selfie as or “Family Photo”.

  35. We don’t have a family portrait tradition now but as a young child we would always take a picture after Easter Sunday Mass

  36. We did family portraits at Sears when the kids were young for many years. With digital cameras now we’ve taken thousands of photos, and we always do a family selfie on vacation and special locations.

  37. In my family we do not have a family portrait tradition, but we do take alot of pictures with our SmartPhones, everytime we are together.

  38. வெற்றி பெற்றவர்களுக்கு வாழ்த்துகள். மோனா மிகவும் நியாயமானவள்.
Veṟṟi peṟṟavarkaḷukku vāḻttukaḷ. Mōṉā mikavum niyāyamāṉavaḷ (hint; I have been to India and have included the anglicised pronounciation)

We rarely have family photographs taken, the last was about 8 years ago. It was at one of my brother’s house and is of my mother surrounded by her 3 sons, daughter in laws and grandchildren. Sadly I don’t have a copy.

From time to time when we are out for a family meal someone takes a camera along but generally it is the conversation, companionship and just family time that we treasure. Andrew, the middle brother, says that he loves to just sit back for a while and observe the fun, friendly and loving interaction between the rest of us, some of it a bit chaotic on occasion. We find it very easy to make each other laugh.

Back in the late 60s my mother took us to a professional photographer for group and individual photographs of her 3 sons. These were all taken in black and white but colour editions were made by painting in the colours. This all looked very good but a mistake was made on one of my brother’s tie and part of the design (rather psychedelic) is the wrong colour.

    1. எழுத்து எனக்குப் பரிச்சயமானது. இவர்களை முன்பு கோவில்களில் பார்த்திருப்பேன் என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.

      1. Well done Jurgen. This is tamil and I was considering using telugu as both of these are widely spoken in Chennai and Madurai the cities that I visited.

I worked in Chennai briefly (2004) and in 2008 went to the wedding of one of the young women that I worked with which was in Madurai her home city. I had stayed in touch with them as they were such lovely people.

  39. A family portrait is something I need to sort again. We take lots of photo’s but not a family portrait. Well at least not for a number of years. My granddaughter is now 14 months old and really want to find somewhere in the new year to get a family portrait done.

  40. My wife and I have a few family pictures while growing up, but we as a family took very few pictures even of our kids. We sort of regret that now. Our daughter takes pictures constantly of her family and every family gathering as well as all her other gatherings. Then she makes albums of them.

  41. Made my day having the xmas card that me and my wife sent to the twins read out in the video. Thank you so much.
Hope you all have a cosmic Christmas! Here’s the family plus two extra special guests…..LOL

      1. You’re welcome, Nigel. I’m having fun myself. This is a blast! LOL.

        Seasons Greetings,
        Mike

  42. Sadly, we have not taken a family portrait for many years. In the past, we went to a portrait studio, but also took many pictures at home informally. Now many family members have passed away and the surviving ones are spread out all over the country, so we don’t get together very often

  43. We never had a tradition of family portraits, but myself and my fiancé won a professional studio photo shoot as a prize at a wedding show.

  44. No not really. I’ve been taking photos in the beginning of my kids growing up together with videos of special occasion – like the marriages of both my girls. Then I’ve tries to take a couple of snaps at every birthday celebrated but it’s fading now, Right now I’m palying with old b/h photos – making color versions via HOTPOT.AI – you should try that – here is an example of me from first grade – first the original and then the color version which is quite good me thinks – nah it’s the other way round

      1. Well it’s not me doing it. You have a picture – open HOTPOT.AI – go to the upper left and press AI tools – go down to COLORIZE PICTURES – upload your pic – choose how detailed you want it done – press colorize – 15-25 second later you have a colorized version – then download – cost nothing.

    1. Looks great!

Funny, I’ve also been recently working on colorizing images for free lately, but most attempts at it have been public domain images from the old “Outer Limits” television shows. It’s easy using the same colorizer you mention here, and there are a few other available sites that work similarly but not as fast processing time.

  45. I only remember one time when my mom and dad had a formal portrait of our family done. However there was always a camera with plenty of pictures taken. Here is one from Christmas 1968. My mom and dad, brother Ken on left in his Army outfit, brother Mario in the middle and me on the right in my Groovy Nehru jacket. Anyone remember those Nehru jackets?

  46. Haven’t had a family portrait for many years. I have a family portrait of my father when he was a one-year-old baby, his father (my grandfather), and my father’s grandfather, (my Urgrossvater) and all of their relatives.

    William Hauslein

  47. We haven’t taken a full family photo taken since my parents 50th wedding anniv, Thanks for the suggestion we need another! THanks for drawing my name! This will be a Merry Christmas! (Pronounces Bar-Tow)

  48. Every Christmas morning at sunrise we’d have a family portrait, but always one person would be missing in the photographs because they were the one running the camera.

  49. Another great video and well done to the 3 winners (you are so generous giving away an extra prize!) We haven’t done a formal portrait since my father passed away some 7 years ago but we now go for lots of informal shots that show our love of family and the wonderful English coastline. Have a good day all #GrooviusMaximus

  50. Oh, but there are roses…at least in the hip tea you both drink! Early on, family portraits were a once-a-year thing but that went by the wayside with the advent of super res iphones. Nowadays everything is captured…like it or not.

  51. A long time ago there used to be a tradition of being photographed in a certain pose at your wedding. I have an example here of my grandmother (the black/white photo) and you can see the man is always sitting with his wife standing next to him. This was from the 1920s but this tradition has mostly gone away. I am the photographer in my family and have many photo books of pictures from holidays, birthday meals, visiting relatives, Christmas etc. I even print off digital images and put them in the same type of albums. The other two pictures are of my mother and her older sister in another professional picture from the 1930s (their initials match yours as M + L). And finally one of my holiday pictures where I took my parents to Vienna for a holiday which I thought you’d like! Of course we had the ride in the horse drawn carriage round the city as all tourists must.

    1. The first one is actually a hand colored photo – but behind that there is a grayscale version and the colorized version with artificial intelligence look like thia

      1. I’m so used to the green one as I’ve had in the family for years! However I can see the dresses are prettier in this version. So thanks, I’ll save these away and share with the family as they bring the photos to life a bit more.

      1. They are my favorite old ones as well. It’s always fun when you revisit very old pictures especially before they were in color. Of course you can sometimes be left with boxes of unnamed pictures and you can’t remember who the people were!

  52. My father was a photographer. He would take pictures of almost everything. So, after awhile, we tried to avoid the camera (But not dad). So the answer is that we were not into family portraits.

  53. Sometimes we take a photo of the family on Christmas, that’s about it I guess..
I do remember crashing a party with my dad and 2 brothers, and sister in law one year (one brother was invited and he just took us with him)
mostly musicians there.. (they let sister in law sing with the band 😉 )
So we took a photo of me, my dad, and my 2 brothers.
The funny part (I think) is I always wished my sister was there, so I drew a stick figure (badly) with photoshop and labeled it as her 🙂

  54. Watching the video again of opening the letters, I noticed Lisa looked kind of imposing with that knife. Does she have some secret tactical knife skill under her belt we don’t know about? ????

  55. I’m sorry to say that family photos were never really a thing in our house growing up. The only pictures my parents would take was of us 4 kids lined up next to the tree on Christmas after we had opened all our gifts. ????????

    Michael

  57. Like a lot of folks here, my family has never been really big on family portraits.

Our unofficial family portrait was a Polaroid taken in our living room in front of a big handmade “Merry Christmas” sign when my siblings and I ranged in age from one to eight. We all struck silly poses, except for the one-year-old, who kept wandering off before my mom could snap the photo.

Fourteen years later we came across the old sign while going through some stuff in the attic, and we decided to recreate the photo in the same location, approximating the same poses as best our bigger bodies could while dressed as similarly as possible. Then we did it one more time another fourteen years after that. We let the most recent anniversary slide, though. We can look goofy without even trying now.

      1. I wish I could share it here, Juergen, but it’s never been digitized. All of us in the family have framed copies of it, but I threw mine in a box and lost track of where I put it. I know I’ve still got it somewhere, though.

      2. I know this all too well David: all the family photos I have are in paper form. Not a single one has been digitized. I myself have always enjoyed taking photos. For many years, however, I only took slides, and even those are not digitized. But I would like to have the most beautiful ones converted at some point, so that I can look at them on a monitor or on a TV.

  58. Nobody I know does studio pictures any more except for weddings, graduation and the like. The cameras and editing software are so good now that I wouldn’t even consider paying for a studio picture.

We did have a few family pictures done in the studio, and I have many family pictures scanned, so I found a couple to post. One is of my kids when they were little, and the other is of my great-grandparents, probably taken sometime in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s.

  59. Hello Ladies,
    Thai answer is 2 phased.
First, our family( brother, sister, me, mom, and Dad) would routinely have our picture taken every year. Usually at the mall, by a traveling photographer. When the 3 of us were older, then just the 3 of us got individual pictures in the same way.
Once I was upset about something when I was about 12, and was Forced to take a family picture. Needless to say I won’t look at the picture.
When Maria was little, we would take Maria to the mall and have our picture taken. Now and Since, I take all of Maria’s pictures myself. Enjoy it so much.
The first one i was about 18 months old, and I’m looking at Santa like, ” who the Hell are you?” Taken at the mall.
The second one is Maria as a Senior in High School. I took it.
The Thirs one is one of my favorites. Maria is about 5, and this was taken at the mall. My Christmas present from Maria that year.

  60. Ughhh!!! There aren’t words to describe how much I dislike having my portrait taken, so NOOOOO family portrait tradition for me.

  61. I was really laughing because they obviously hadn’t read all the comments before making the video because there were literally dozens of Bohemian Rhapsody votes and no wonder. What a great one.

I don’t have any family portrait traditions, but sure wish we had. It’s just something that we never manage to incorporate into the holiday scramble. We’ve done one or two over the years.

  62. When I first got married in 1979, we got shots done on post before my wife was stationed in West Germany. I later followed her. We had our oldest in 1980 and her professional shot was taken in Great Lakes Illinois on the Navy base I grew up in as a child. I was stationed at Fort Sheridan Illinois with the 4th Army Band. I later changed my job to being a M1A1 Tank Commander. My Son was born in 1990 just before I shipped out for what is now known as Desert Shield/Desert Storm. That is his first professional shot just before I shipped out. Sorry about condition, I have kept these photos for an extremely long time in my wallet. Ever since I shipped out for the war. Hope nit too much. Stay Groovy. ❤????

  63. First off, Congrats to the triple winners today … YippeeWooHoo x 3 ????

Now as far as family portraits are concerned, yes when I was around 3/4 there was one taken for the church directory away back when, then on another occasion, not a whole family portrait but of of my older brothers and me taken at a Kmart store back in the day, I was around 6/7, then maybe on Xmas Day with family , there might be a rare time when a family portrait was taken but ususalky it is individually or a few of us, never really were the type nor could afford to have professional family portraits done… A favorite memory story and photo from I recall hearing /seeing from my Grandma Rea ( My Mom’s Mom ) was she was 3 yrs old in 1903 and the family went to have their family portrait taken, she was scared of the photographer and of tge camera as it was when the photographer had to hide under a covering/tarp/blanket to take the photo, the whole event traumatized/terrorized poor wee Grandma and it clearly showed in the photo , and there afterwards was never too keen on having photos taken of her and into her 80s (passed a few wks after turning 89) could still vividly recall that day … by the way, Grandma ‘s Mom was an identical twin ????????????

  64. Our family did a family photo a couple of time when I/we were young children. Since then, seems family photos happen at special events such as weddings, anniversaries etc.

  65. Not as of lately, however, I take family photos at events, Christmas and other holidays. Stay Groovy and Peace to you all!!!!

  66. Hello girls, On Christmas Day the whole family cousins and uncles, aunts, parents
and of cource friends Just get together at someone’s home and we have a very cheerful day eating drinking and being merry and of course exchanging gifts with one another And Take many pictures of each other and share them and those who cannot drive home for one reason or another just sleep ove That’s pretty much what our Christmas day consists of. FUN!

  67. Not into family photos. It is always a reminder of how horrible certain members of own my family are. there was a suggestion that one should be taken years ago, but thankfully never happened.

  68. Never had any official family portraits done.
I think the only one done professionally was when I got married and the image was carved onto a cave wall. That’s how long ago that happened.
No informal ones that I know of because usually either my mum or I were the other side of the camera taking them.

  69. Congrats to the winners, and so nice of you to do a bonus draw! You spoil us immensely. ???? ????
The portrait of the both of you for the giveaway today looks awesome. Looking forward to seeing it again in the calendar.

I’m impressed with the magic candle lighting today. I’m holding my breath to see how you light it by the end of the Advent.

We never did any really formal family portraits, it was usually spontaneous snap shots of everyone during family vacation trips, or special occasions. I started taking a lot of pictures after the digital camera was invented in the early 2000s. But I do get into a lot of trouble these days with the ladies in our family as they don’t like getting their pictures snapped spontaneously. They made me delete some on occasion. ????

The first photo is of my older brother to my left, 8 years older than me, my other brother 3 years older than me to my right, my baby sister 7 years younger than me, and my mom. I think I was 14 then. This was taken in one of our big family road trips to California in 1977 in the Red Wood forests. My older sister is missing in this photo.

The second is a family photo taken in 2003. I’m at the very left and my little sister next to me. There is my dad and mom, and my older sister in between them.

These old photos sure become priceless treasures over time.

    1. These are very beautiful moments in time. My mother packed our family photos in a big shoebox. I have taken that over now and will make a family album out of it. Or I’ll just leave the pictures in the box. There, the ravages of time have not been able to harm them so far.

      1. Hi Jurgen. That’s great your mom packed all those old family photos. We have all our old photos stored away in various albums. A few years back I completed a project of scanning them all into digital formats, hopefully forever preserving them from further degradation due to time.

      2. A beautiful dog and a happy dog owner. I wonder if Max had any idea at this point that becoming part of the Roe family was the best decision of his life?

      3. Jurgen, your father I can tell from his expression was very fond of Max. Sheepdogs (Shepards) in general instinctively have a protective herding and guarding character of it’s pack or family. I remember when my young nephew visited and the 4 of us walked in a park, Max tended to run around checking in on us all trying to keep us together in a sense. Miss him a lot. Thanks for sharing the photo of your father and his Max.

  70. We never did family portraits. But my mom always loved taking pictures even though she was really bad at it! She would always get her fingers in one corner of every photo! And her spacial senses weren’t that great. She’d see a turkey up in the tree far away and take a picture of it and you could barely make out what the heck it was in the photo! I use to bust her chops about it all the time! She always looked forward to getting our school photos each year however. She (like me) never liked getting her picture taken.

    1. Thomas, your mom should have teamed up with my grandmother, who often wrote helpful information on the backs of photos such as “taken last year”.

  73. Every year since I was little until about high school, my mom would take my brother and me into a portrait studio around Christmas. When we were older someone would take a photo in front of the tree at home. This one is the most recent one I have of myself during Christmas time.

  74. We had a hard time taking a family photo. we were all so large we couldn’t fit in the frame and whenever they tried to take a photo the lens shattered! (I don’t know why)

  75. Many years ago when I was a kid our mother would buy us all new Easter outfits for Sunday church and afterwards we’d go to a scenic spot and get a family pic in which Mom would then frame and hang on the wall…after I left home that tradition didn’t happen much…now it just happens when the kids graduate from high school….oh I do remember one incident one year my brother and I got into a wrestling match at one of the locations and Mom was furious that we were being stupid wrestling in our brand new suits…Hey we were having fun !!! Luvya Mom…Mom passed away this past August age 91 and my brother passed in April age 68….well this little exercise has got my eyes watering!!!????

    1. Rick, thanks for sharing, been 20 plus years since my parents have passed and this time of the year gets me all teary eyed as well
