Day 25 – Merry Christmas!

MERRY CHRISTMAS from the bottom of our hearts!

Whether you are celebrating or not, we hope there’s a little bit of magic in your day.

We are going to take a short break from the internet for a few days to spend time with our family and friends. Thank you for being such a wonderful part of our lives this year and for the incredible support and encouragement we feel each and every day. Even on days that are a little tough ♥

We feel so lucky to be sharing our journey with so many amazing people, and we can’t wait for another year full of new adventures (and hopefully a little less madness).

To you, the grooviest folks on earth,

Mona & Lisa

  1. Hello Ladies,
Merry Christmas to each of you!
Thank you for giving us so many special Treats throughout the year! You all are truly the best!!
So many events this year and peaks that will never be matched! In a trying year, where crazy things occurred, Team MLT was a shining example of peace and tranquility
. You give all of us a reason to keep coming back. Your Incredible Music just keeps getting better. What a way to end the year!
I Bought Myself A Politician and Songbird. Both should be Number 1 hits and have Double Platinum Records.
Here’s to even bigger and Brighter 2022.
    Rick

  2. I know I’m a couple days late, but wanted to say Merry Christmas to everyone!

I’m a fairly new MLT Club member, but I wanted to thank all of you for all being so kind to one another. I’ve seen some pretty ugly discussions/arguments/etc… on the internet, but I don’t recall one instance of that on this site. Thank you all for a much needed respite from the “real world”!

Here’s hoping for a safe, sane, and hopefully more “normal” 2022! Happy New Year everyone!

    1. Happy New Year Ron. Anyone making unpleasant remarks or the like in this forum would probably be removed immediately by M & L and family. Even if they didn’t the rest of us would just shun the perpetrator so everything they wrote would be worthless and pointless. As Allan says, it is only love and joy here and marvellous because of it.

  3. Merry, Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas.

Four Colly Birds, just for you!

As most folks know, Day 4, according to the Christmas carol, The Twelve Days of Christmas, is Four Colly Birds. In order to globally synchronize everyone in the MLT Club, Day 4 begins at midnight GMT (about 12 hours from now), and everyone could follow that observation — or something like that — and be synced. Until then, some MLT Club folks are starting Day 4 at this very moment in the far eastern time zones.

What about Day 5 of the carol?

That’s a challenge. There’s a clever MLT solution to the Day 5 question, but that will have to wait until Day 5.

Here is the challenge: According to the lyrics within Christmas carol, The Twelve Days of Christmas, Day 5 is five gold rings. This is a lyrical, song note, and tempo departure from the preceding stanza pattern because there is no particular songbird described for Day 5 — by most accounts. There are respected subject matter specialists who dispute jewelry as the proper characterization for Day 5’s gift. Furthermore, there are a number of fitting interpretations of what the five gold rings actually are within that carol that wouldn’t take much convincing. Due to the number of songbirds mentioned, doubts arose about the gold rings in particular. The author of the carol is unknown, further complicating Day 5 resolution.

However, several factors do in fact favor making a formal determination. The earliest known publication containing this much-loved carol included hand-drawn illustrations. As the most authoritative source for determining the original meaning of the gifts described in the carol, slight variations that honor the tradition the best tend to stick around longest, such as the 1909 revision most currently used in North America. The 1909 revision aligns syllables to notes in a way most prevalent to modern English, such as beginning the carol with “On” as a prefix to each Day’s stanza.

Source: Anonymous (1780). Mirth without Mischief; containing The Twelve Days of Christmas. London, United Kingdom. pp. 5–16.

Given the earliest publication of The Twelve Days of Christmas carol appearing within (and its illustrations), what is the most interesting is until Day 5, the carol describes songbirds for each day, assigns a jewelry item to Day 5, then goes back to songbirds on Days 6 and Day 7.

Here’s a listing of the songbirds in the order they appear in The Twelve Days of Christmas carol:

    Partridge
    Turtle Dove
    French Hen
    Colly Bird
    Goose
    Swan

    1. Hello Michael. Here in the UK I’ve always sung (or rather made a noise akin to singing) 4 Calling Birds and I have just done an online search for the lyrics and this was confirmed. It was introduced in 1909 to replace the previous variants which included Colly Birds.

In my final year at school a large group of my classmates sang carols on the last day of school before Christmas. A lot of the words were amended to make everything more coarse and I suspect that you can guess what Calling Birds was changed to! A fair number of teachers, including de la Salle brothers, passed nearby on their way to the staffroom. None of them did anything, although a few smiled and probably wanted to join us. Not one of my most proud memories though.

I also find it fascinating that you say 5 gold rings, as per the version we sing in the UK, whereas the US version is often 5 golden rings (so I am informed).

      1. A M e-e-e-e-r y Christmas to you Mr. Philip !!

I’m glad you like Christmas carols. Same here.

This carol in particular is a great piece musical history to know. I was curious where it originated, the author, the subject matter, etc., and that’s what got me interested. Plus, the MonaLisa Twins challenge question about the name of their new original tune brought that question to the surface. ‘Tis the Season. It’s a beautiful carol.

As you know, The Twelve Days of Christmas is loaded with songbirds.

Like yourself, I grew up learning the 1909 revision, and have to say the 1909 is faithful to the original. Someone might dispute that because Colly Birds became Calling Birds. Even then I still consider 1909 a faithful rendering and it resolves some questions I had about the carol, like why so many songbirds and then the 5 Gold(Golden) Rings phrase gives the stanzas a cascading effect, but the big question is why did the lyrics change gears on Day 8?

The answer to that question and many more is found in the 1780AD Mirth without Mischief publication.

        M e r r y Christmas!

It was wonderful to see two genuine, lovely, and generous souls sharing their Christmas cheer. (What a lovely picture)! Thank you so much for being so giving of your time and treasures. I feel truly blessed. Merry Christmas.

  10. The only thing I regret about the MLT Club was not finding it sooner. Thank you to the Wagner Family for dedicating a whole month to their fans.

  11. And, as has been already stated below, we feel fortunate to share your journey. Here’s hoping you have a great holiday. Frohe Weihnachten!

  13. Merry Christmas everyone. So it is officially a white Christmas in the UK, but only in Scotland and high up in the Pennies, so you sort of got your wish but not in Liddlypool.

Vitally important that you take time off to enjoy festivities with friends and family. You give so much that we are spoilt and so have no right to demand anything from you. Make sure that you give yourselves enough rest and don’t rush back too quickly.

    The livestream was amazing.

  14. We are the lucky ones in being privileged to share your journey.
Thank you for sharing your journey, music, humour, smiles and (most of all) love with us.
    You make us groovy!
Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday season. Looking forward to the new adventures! 🙂

  15. Thank you for all the love, time, and effort that you put into the Advent Calendar! It brought me so much joy. Looking forward to a better 2022

  16. Mona and Lisa, hope you had the most wonderful Christmas Eve last night, and continuing joyful Christmas Day and season ahead! With much gratitude, thank you for all you do to light up our world with your beauty, hope, and good cheer through your music and all you do. Wishing you all the very best and more happiness and great music in 2022.

I had a little bit of a magic this morning waking up to a white Christmas morn! This is a rarity here, and felt even more special bundled up in my warm cool Day 7 Advent MLT Hoodie!!!!

Love the fountain pen script on the Christmas card envelope, and love the groovy card, thank you.

    Merry Christmas to all! ⛄ ⛄ ⛄ ???? ???? ????

      1. Merry Christmas Philip. Indeed it is cold here, going down into the -20C windchills tonight, but I feel warm and toasty inside!

      2. Merry Christmas to you as well Jung. A dreary 7C here during the daytime and dropping slowly, rain (more) due any minute.

I’m about to sign off as we’re having a late Christmas meal as there was a sudden change of circumstances. 7.00pm is not too bad though…now for that bottle of beer with the turkey!

  17. Merry Christmas my friends!
