Day 8 – Let’s Start at the Beginning …

We had to start somewhere

As promised two days ago, we are taking a trip down memory lane and are revisiting some of our earliest YouTube videos. Why not start with THE earliest! 🙂

Filming this made us feel incredibly nostalgic, slightly embarrassed but also terribly proud. Sometimes it is good to reflect on your beginnings and how far you’ve come since. Sometimes it’s also fun to poke fun at your past-self a little bit.

All the videos we watched today you can find on our official YouTube channel, except for our first original song “Alone” which is set to “unlisted” and therefore inaccessible to the general YouTube audience. However, if you want to listen to it in full you can still do that through this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7wJtM9bRLk

We decided to upload today’s video to our official YouTube channel too, to share a little bit of the fun we have been having here at the MT Club with everyone! 🙂 That explains the slightly different introduction and explanations in the beginning of today’s video. We want everyone to know what they are missing out on by not being an MLT Club member 😉

Sorry for not being too active in the comments these last two days. We signed and sent off all of the Christmas cards so you will hopefully get yours in time. We’ll make more time for chatting again today!

Hope you enjoyed this video ♥

  1. Now that was a lot of fun. I’m really looking forward to your live stream on the 23rd. Thanks for doing this every year. It’s such a refreshing, and real treat to see you put yourselves out there every day for us during this time of year.

  2. I hope you leave your older videos up on YouTube. It’s nice for guys like me who just discovered MLT to look back on how you started and all the different steps of your journey. Just think how fun it would be to be able to see videos of John and Paul playing in the Quarrymen or George plucking a cheap guitar in his bedroom. These videos tell a story, please don’t remove them.

  3. I love your videos at every stage of your lives. As a pediatrician I’ve told my teenage patients to be be happy with who they are when and where they are, because that’s the basis of who you’ll be. I can see very clearly the foundations of your songwriting and your incomparable live Cavern performances. I hope the more you look at these older videos you can smile more and enjoy the growth into the amazing young women you’ve grown into.

  4. You definitely need to leave many of the old videos up. I will admit that I don’t listen to the 2007 album very often, but it is an important part of your legacy that new fans will want to experience. I always though “Alone” was a strong first effort. I remember hearing that you were kind of embarrassed about it. I think dusting it off and breathing some new life into it is a brilliant idea. (Utterly brill!) I always have to laugh at idea of Papa Rudi taking the high part in “All My Loving”. 😉 A remake of that similar to your 2014 performance on Sally Nadin’s BBC show would be a good candidate for BAM4, no?

    1. Jerry, exactly what I say!
I love watching Mona and Lisa watching their old stuff and I hope they leave the early videos for everybody.

  5. Watching you react to your own first concert video was absolutely priceless. I’m a bit surprised you hadn’t seen it for such a long time as it is right there with all your other videos. I watch it from time to time. It is the foundation of your musical journey and your willingness to share that journey with all of us is what makes you both so special, lovable, and without equal.

I just watched “Alone”. Honestly, this is a seriously good song and I can’t wait to hear you do it on the upcoming live-stream. Actually I would like to see you dress it up using your production skills and make it a full studio offering at some point. It would be so phenomenal -MLT’s first original song!

  6. Today’s Advent calendar video was just so adorable and endearing. Mona and Lisa, you two are so brave to dive into this in front of everybody. I could tell there was some apprehension, but watching you remembering back to your first songs was just the most heartwarming thing I’ve seen in a long time. Perhaps you caught a glimpse in your younger selves what we see every time you appear before camera here in the MLT Club.

“Alone” is my favorite from the concert CD, and I always assumed it was a hit I’d missed growing up. Thank you for playing it today. I do hope you’ll include it in the Livestream.

  7. I’ll bet I’m not alone in kicking myself right now for not being clever enough to have thought of submitting an early MLT video here with a description along the lines of “Here’s a new group that shows a lot of promise. What do you think?”

  8. Day 8….Worth the wait… Yay.. that “Alone” is getting it ‘s due spotlight …have loved it from Get-Go many eons ago … I immensely got a kick and joy out of watching/how you both reacted to your younger selves in #MLTBuzzLuvGroovified Reflecting …

All those earlier videos , had a huge impact, and made a difference in people ‘s music lives & personally, it has proven to be … Thsnkyou for the time warp , it was awesome …🫶🤘

  9. So, first of all, awwwwwww (you can hear the crescendo I’m sure)

I’ve always thought that time travel was not a smooth event; a little jolt seems likely when you get to the other time. Being familiar with your work presently and seeing the beginning has a little bit of that. The quality level you have attained can be attributed to hard work and discipline, of course, but I suspect it has more to do with passion and love for what you do, and it’s evident.

“Alone”, live stream, OK but how about a Duo Session?

    1. Haha, yes it was weird going that far back and revisiting our baby faces. “Alone” for a Duo Session? I think that’s pushing it! 😉 But we have been talking about trying to write a brand new song for the upcoming set of Duo Sessions we want to record! I think that’s time better invested.
Now if only there could be 8 days a week, or better 48 hours in a day …

  10. I will always remember your first videos because that is how I first discovered you two ladies. I love being able to hear “Alone”, as I have never heard that song before. I too, would love to see it in the live stream!

    1. Oh, that’s interesting! So I guess that’s another benefit of leaving the old videos up on YouTube … people discover our music through them 🙂

  11. So much talent and abilities at 13 and 15 !
And now wow wow , your both growing more all the time !!!
What a joy to be a part of your fantastic journey !!

  12. This is simply a fun Day 8 video to watch. The most interesting thing is how clean up on the bargain electric guitar went because I know M&L love their instruments.

Now I’m seeing Alone for the very first time. It’s very special to be allowed to see this and well worth belonging to the MLT Club.

The only other thing I want to say is I now sort of feel like I grew up with Mona and Lisa. This all reminds me of growing up with The Beatles that you watched them grow as musicians and writers and after a while, it stays with you. It’s an added touch that only MLT has.

    Mike
    Advent Calendar Day 8

  13. I know I’ve mentioned many times that “Alone” is one of my very favorite (def top 5) MTL songs. Doing it on the live stream would be the best Christmas gift ever! But oh my, ladies. If you think it’s harder to remember things now, wait until you’re 50 and can’t remember what you ate for dinner the night before! LOL. Of course, we’ll still need you even when you’re 64, but it does get harder and harder. You were so cute back then! Of course now you’re just stunning and beautiful, but the cuteness still shines through. Goodbye My Lover is one of my very favorite of the early covers. I love your adaptation much more than the original. My other favorite is Punkrocker. Wouldn’t mind seeing an updated rendition of that, either.

  14. OMG Such a lovely trip down memory lane Mona and Lisa. I love how you both sang in the early video’s. I loved 8 days a week video and Mrs. Robinson Video. To me you both have that special gift and it shows in these early video’s. I have said this before and I still say today, I won’t in my lifetime witness such lovely and talented ladies hands down. You have the most wonderful zest for life and your so down to earth it is refreshing. If it were not for Revolution and the last time video I would of never knew of your talents. Love this advent series keep it coming ladies and god bless and see you tomorrow
Bill and Maddie Isenberg Huge Fans from Pittsburgh PA USA

    1. Aw, thanks Bill! You never know what video people stumble across that introduces them to our music and we love hearing about it!

“Revolution” is one of the songs we gave a “make-over” when we covered it for the second time during the Cavern Club set. We’re excited to do the same for some of our earliest recordings during the live stream!

    1. Absolutely! 🙂 We most likely wouldn’t be sitting here today, chatting with you if it wasn’t for their amazing support and love ♥

  15. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this video on your YouTube site first thing this morning. Thanks for sharing it, I will share it with some friends.
I first started my MonaLisa journey at the beginning with these videos. And I was amazed at the talent and poise these two young girls possessed. It is not easy at any age to step in front of a live audience. In some of your later videos, you showed that same poise when things didn’t go quite right. Still amazes me.
I love your reactions to the younger version of yourselves. And yes, please perform your first original on the live stream. I’ve not seen/heard it before. Is it still in the clubhouse? And I am sure any other song you choose will be a smash.
“So long until tomorrow” (Lowell Thomas). Stay Groovy. Peace Be

    1. Thank you so much Joe ♥ The “Alone” video is set to “unlisted” on YouTube so you can’t access it though our channel page but we did link it in the post above. Or you can click HERE.
It is also on THIS CD.

  16. That was just so cute!! I remember watching all those earlier videos when I discovered you and loving them all! it’s a lot of fun for me to watch back as well, as I remember being younger and watching those videos. I remember being obsessed with your cover of All I have to do is dream and Blackbird. and you mentioned before, that little talk before the Blackbird music video, I find it so precious and hilarious but in a good way!

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to join the live stream as I’m going to a concert that evening, maybe I can join for a bit in the car ride!

I’m very curious about your new version of your first original song, I think that’s a great idea, Mona! I don’t think I remember watching that on youtube back then, so I’m looking forward to that!

    Great video once again!

    1. That is such a sweet thought! I love that we grew up “together” ♥
We will definitely re-post the live stream once it is over, so don’t worry about missing it. Just don’t crash your car trying to tune in while driving 😀
      Have fun at the concert!

  17. What a great way to begin our day. That was really fun.
Thanks for sharing all that. We receive lots of enjoyment to watch and listen to everything you do and then to look back at the very early days of your journey makes it all so much more special. And in respect to your talent –
To quote four lads from Liverpool – “It’s Getting Better All the Time”.
    Have a great day,
    Bobby S.
P.S. I think I am getting spoiled by viewing your videos each day this month.
So how will I do without it come January?
Guess I will have to just listen to your CDs and watch your When We’re
Together DVD more often. And of course, constantly look at your videos
on here at the Club and on YouTube.

  18. What a joy watching you both revisiting your musical past. Please do this again another time in the future. I rember back in the late 60’s and early 70’s when I was playing the guitar more frequently I would do some percussive hammering on my old Martin and Washburn guitars. I was a big fan of Richie Havens at the time who had a very percussive way of playing the guitar and unique way of playing chords. I never sucessfully mastered his style but I did play the guitars quite hard for several years. Because your drumming on the guitar reminded me of him I am attaching a link to one of his sons “Handsome Johnny”. He doesn;t finger drum but he plays very percussively (is that a word?). Note how worn the wood is above, under and below the strings.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR2v-pApNAw

OK, so that was a bit of a rabbit hole I just went down but that’s a result of watching this fantastic and delightful video. You where really good back then and you just keep getting better as the years go by!!!!

    1. Richie Havens has such a unique way of playing. We love him! We often reference him when discussing different rhythm guitar styles. Thanks for sharing that video!

  19. All the best superlative adjectives to describe this video have already been invoked here, so I guess all I can add is… neato!

I’ve always been curious about the filming of the 2007 concert. Were professional videographers hired, or was it just some very talented friends of the family?

  20. Love it Love it Love it! The beginnings of awesomeness! I am so glad that you saw your potential back then cuz you sure are a blessing to us all today. And you keep getting better…💛🎶❤️

  21. This should be the first of a series of these videos. Everyone like’s looking back at the early clips of the Beatles and the Stones and other bands and we do too enjoy seeing early Mona and early Lisa (and baby Mona and baby Lisa too). I am so grateful that Papa Rudi thought ahead and made all these videos.
It was a real joy watching each of you react to your earlier renditions, Mona watching Mona , Lisa watching Lisa. Trust me, we have the same smiles when we watch.
It is obvious at even in your early performances that there is something special there. I know it’s been a lot of work, but congratulations on being who and what you wanted to be, and for being so important to a lot of people you never met. You were raised right, you have good heads on your shoulders, you have beautiful souls, and you don’t take any of that for granted. Must be the sentimental side of Christmas getting to me today, but I love you ladies.💛❤️

    1. Yes, we have also thought about keeping up a version of these types of videos even after the Advent Calendar has finished. We’ll do a bit more brainstorming on that 🙂
And thank you that is really kind and means a lot ♥

  22. OMG! This was just so special, hard to type with my eyes tearing up with the joy you just shared. All young people have a feeling that they don’t want to be reminded of some of the shy awkwardness that is part of discovering yourself and growing up. I tell you in all honesty, I saw no imperfections in any of the recordings stemming from either of you, only the promise of a very bright future ahead. Yes Lisa, to be able to hug that young lady and assure her the path was going to be fine would be great. But that’s also part of the growth process. Doubt, indecision, and even a bit of fear all build the strength and character you need to forge ahead. Not only in music, but for life in general.
I get embarrassed myself seeing some of the old home movie clips when I was young, so you are far from alone there. Seeing those (you) two young ladies with the support of loving parents is so very heartwarming, and knowing that is still there today is even more so.
Should you revisit “Alone”? Absolutely…puhleeez! Also, I love the song Hallelujah, I think you would do a bang up job on that as well.
Thank you so much for this,
    Daryl

    1. Thank you Daryl, that’s very kind ♥ I think you’re right, we’re not alone with feeling a bit weird looking back at our younger selves but the older we get the better we are able to appreciate it for what it was.:-)
Thanks for being here and hanging out with us!

  23. I love watching all of your videos from your earliest childhood when you were just toddlers through today. However, your first music videos are pretty awesome as early teenagers and when you started singing along with “yourselves” in Im Yours for a couple lines, I thought how great it would be on the live stream if your played your early videos of your first original or Im Yours and the “four of you” do the entire song together!!!

    1. Haha, that’s an interesting idea! I’m not quite sure how we’d do that and for what song but we’ll think it through. 🙂

      1. Well, if it’s even possible Im sure Rudi can find a way. After all, he is the magician with a green screen and other digital magic. If not maybe just make a video day with the same concept.

  24. OH My God that was so good, thank you for showing us this and you are just like all of us if we went back and looked at what we did we be laughing too

  25. That was precious! Your reactions were priceless. Alone and I Will on live-stream? Yes please! Thank you for the smiles! 🙂

  26. Hello everyone. I loved this one! I got to see your first song. I do think you are a little critical of yourselves. The imperfections are the building blocks to today. I told you that I was thinking of having my brother do Ain’t No Sunshine from that concert. Let you know all my favorite parts. Especially, look at Mona’s joy in her drum solo. I actually sponsored a second video from that concert. I had a recommendation of the Santana song. I listened and I thought of that concert. I said, they did a real nice job at 13 and my soul told me to sponsor that one too. I have a story about Santana that has kept with me. In 1980 I was stationed in Frankfurt West Germany with the 3rd Armored Division Band. We played many Politzi shows. In the middle we had a break. I was talking with a England Bobby marching band person and some of my friends went looking for a pub to get a beer. They stumbled upon one that had Santana giving a private show, as they told me. They were told they were closed, Santana saw the uniforms and said let them in for awhile. So they had a beer and listened to Santana. I have so much respect for him. I’ll give everyone the 2 links to my sponsored videos with my brother. Mona and Lisa, this brings me back to when I was deep diving and my soul screaming to support and buy your music. I know. I’m a crazy Oldman. Here are the links if interested.

    Enjoy my memories too.
Peace. Stay safe. God Speed. Stay Groovy!❤️🌹🤘

    1. That’s an interesting story about Santana, Ken. Thinking way back my wife and I saw him and Jeff Beck playing back to back at an outdoor venue in Ohio. I got Santana 4 at the library last week and it’s fantastic. He reunited with Neil Schon on this one. Mucho recommended by this oldster.✌️

      1. Thank you my friend. When I played big band in late 70s and early 80s I played so much Santana. The story made it more real back then. I still think that Lisa at 13 did a very tasteful job. ❤️🌹🤘

  27. It seemed obvious from the video that you two had not revisited the original videos for a while. I watch a few of them on a regular basis, and I get the feeling that some others in the club do to. My favorite song from the first album is “Wonderful Tonight”. Lisa really shines on that song, and Michaela’s saxophone was a perfect choice. Another of my favorites is “Love is all around me”. Mona was saying that she wasn’t singing loud enough back then, but she does great on this one. A third video I really like is the father/daughter piece “All My Lovin'”, which has the most views by far of any of the songs on the first album.

As to which of your older videos I’d like to see you play on the 23’rd, I agree that “I’m Yours” would be a great one. How about “Wonderful Tonight” (does Michaela still play the Sax?), or “Love is all around me”, or “All My Lovin'” (Can you talk Papa Rudi into it?).

I have always been awed by seeing two 13-year-old girls with so much musical talent. You have now matured into two beautiful, worldly women, and your music has grown to new heights, but you have always sung like angels.

  28. I loved his reaction when he saw himself in his beginnings, thanks for sharing.

and maybe it’s too much to ask but please sing Alone on your live stream.

    1. We’ve decided we’ll do it and already had a little practice play-through today! The things you make us do! … 😉

  29. Thank you so much for sharing this! So cool! I did not even start learning guitar until I was 15, and I never got the singing gene, was totally terrible at it. I did not realize until 2012, at the age of 61, that I can sing, with my guitar. You both were very good right from the start and look at you now! Perfection!

  30. Absolutely adorable! I’ll have to check out “Alone” in its entirety when I get home tonight.
When I was 13, I was still playing army in the woods with my friends, while you were carving out a career! 😜
As always, I am looking forward to seeing what you record next!
    Have a fantastic day!

  31. Very enjoyable! I loved watching your reactions to your early videos and I’m glad that you were kind and grateful to your younger selves (your younger selves were amazing.) Besides your talent, the things that attract me most to the two of you are your kind, caring, humble and grateful manner. You are a delight! And I am so glad that you have the support of your Dad and Step Mom; family is everything! Thank you for doing this Advent Calendar; it’s my new favorite way to start the day!

  32. Ok, I cried all the way through this video. Seeing the incredible gifts you possessed at such a young age, and the intensity with which you offered them was very moving. Even more so was seeing the nurture and support of your family, and your own gentle and kind reaction to your younger selves, Lisa’s comment about wanting to wrap her arms around her younger self and assure her that everything would be okay melted my heart. I so appreciate the fact that you girls were nurtured into your creative, musical selves rather than pushed by parents wishing to vicariously experience fame and fortune. Huge thanks to your dad and Michaela!
Also, please please please perform Alone on your livestream! So very beautiful for a first original song!

    1. Awww, you’re so sweet and I appreciate the words about our family too ♥ We’re equally grateful for what Dad and Michaela have done for us for so many years now, and it’s a blessing to be able to still be working together after all this time. Now we have all of you along for the ride too, and it couldn’t be more fun! 🙂

    2. Jeannette, your reaction to the video was the exact same as mine, but you put it into words so much better than I could. Well-done, and thank you!

  33. Simply put, the BEST VIDEO EVER! Woke up early this morning to watch the Advent video before going to work and what a way to begin the day! It is evident that you enjoyed watching these videos.

Thank you for showing “Alone” for the first time and for posting “I’m Yours”, one of my favorite early MLT songs. The first concert always will be the beginning of your journey, and it went so well!

  34. My cat, Kooper woke me up early today, sitting on my chest, rubbing on my face, and I owe him one, big time! When I checked my phone for the time, I immediately noticed a new video alert from YouTube! As fate would have it, Mom woke early, too, so we got to watch before I went to work for a change!
We both adore watching your earliest vids(still really jonesin’ for the “Stand by Me” vid, by the way!)! I loved your take on “I’m Yours” since the first time I saw it! And “Alone”…WOW!!! Also can’t get enough of PapaRudi and Michaela anytime they join you!
I was surprised to hear Mona say she lacked confidence performing early on. Her exuberant energy in “Twist and Shout” hid that well. I get the impression she wanted to quote the old “if you can’t be good, be loud” line, but I’d never agree it applies!
I predict a throng of new members after this YouTube release!

    1. Oh, and I loved the tiny bit of Mona’s guitar percussion and especially your reactions to it! The beat is definitely in both of you and you can’t keep it from bursting forth from your inner beings at any time! Duo sessions wouldn’t be the same without the shots of Mona’s variously-shod foot tapping out time on the sound board!

  35. I enjoy going back in time to see you as young girls just starting out on your venture and traveling forward through the years developing into two beautiful and talented young women. You must always keep memories to look back on in later years.

  36. Watching your early videos and enjoying them, I have a question. These days you perform as MonaLisa and Mona is on the left and Lisa is on the right. In the early videos you seemed to be the other way round with Lisa on the left. When did you make the decision to appear as you do now?

    1. I think we were standing that way round at the earlier shows simply by chance or because the layout of the stage made more sense that way.

Probably when we shot some very early “promo” photos for our website or news articles was when we realised that we should probably stick to the order that makes most sense with our band name, so we have kept it up ever since, 🙂

  37. Oh wow, this is so amazing to see! Your 2007 concert, although it may be your earliest performance and you were learning and developing your talents, it all sounds so great, it’s one of my favourite albums to listen to on road trips. It’s been all up and down the west coast with me via cruise and car, all the way from Alaska down to Mexico! You gave it your own character on each song, and the singing and musicianship has so much heart and soul, love every song you did.

You are the coolest on the drums there Mona in Twist and Shout, and wow your singing Lisa done with so much feeling on Good By My Lover. So much incredible talent right from the very beginning just explodes on the screen. I’ve waited to see the video for Alone so long, and finally at last. Right from the very first guitar notes, absolutely beautiful and both your singing, so moving. I think a refreshed performance of this song at the Livestream would be incredible, and even a Duo Session version would be magic! Then your I’m Yours, is priceless, loved your reaction. One of my favourite videos of yours. I really love your early raw and passionate playing on this one.

Thanks so much Mona and Lisa, this was so incredible to see, loved it! 🎶👍😊💛❤

    1. Hi Jung. Remember when a few of us chatted about “Alone” a few months back in the Forum? Absolutely great to at last see the video and how the twins shared the lead. And to think they were not only singing in a second language, but writing as well. I’m so glad Mona advocated for another performance for us all.

      1. Hi David, yeah I remember we talked about Alone. It is so beautiful and the song writing and performance of it amazing the way they express all that tenderness and sweet emotion.

  38. Really cool to see you watching early MLT, such fun with your reactions. Its easy to cringe at your earlier selves but compare those songs with the tracks on Why? and you can be so proud of how you have grown and improved over all these years. Its an amazing journey. I admit I don’t watch the really early ones too much as I prefer later videos around the Bus Stop era and later which are super confident and contain MLT zany humour which I love. Good idea to include Alone in the live stream as I’d don’t know it at all and I’m sure you can pull off a great version of it now!

As I watch this the snow is starting to fall for the first time this winter so it must be a sign that the MLT live stream is coming soon!

    1. Welcome winter! Even here in the UK we’ve had the first bit of frost for the last couple of nights but unfortunately there is no snow in the forecast. Send some our way if you’ve got any spare, please! 😉

It really has been an amazing journey and we appreciate the comment. Looking back helps to put things in perspective – we’re very happy with where we’re at and all of you guys are a big reason for that!

  39. I really like these videos of your first concert, hearing your teenage voices, we can see your joy for being on stage, the important support and the great participation of Rudi and Michaela, by the way she plays the saxophone very well, she could appear again in your new musical creations. and the audience was very loud.. Thank you dear girls I’m loving the videos.. Stay Groovy.

    1. Thanks, Antonio! Yes, we promise we’ll play “Alone”. We just played it again for the first time in more than a decade!

  40. Thanks!! I enjoyed watching young Mona and Lisa. I still get a kick out of the intro to Blackbird.

Any exciting news for 2023? Even if it is just a small bit.

  41. What precious videos! I do go back to them every now and then. Anybody watching with any discernment can see that you were special even back them. Though you’re still very young from my point of view!
Just got my Christmas cards out today too…
My cheeks always hurt at the end of the videos for smiling so much! 😊
    Thank you!

  42. Wow blown away with early video. Considering both your ages that is amazing. You can see from the support of your family how they gave you confidence right from the start. Totally in awe the more I find out about you both and your amazing family

  43. Congratulations! It’s certainly a great feeling to be able to look back on your own musical career after all these years and to say: all the effort and belief in yourself was worth it. To be honest: when I found the first video of you on youtube, I thought: “Oh my, again two teenagers with guitars”. But something was different with your music than with many other young talents. It was the passion with which you played the music. You don’t just play music, you live the music you play. When I saw the music video “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” it clicked: Yes, this cover version was something special (also because of the regional train in the video, which I have often used to travel to Cologne 🙂 )

    1. Hi Jurgen! Yeah totally agree, well said. When they sing and play the music, there is something really special going on there. So much passion and feeling. Their Cavern Club performance of “Mr Postman/Wipeout”, they sing it with so much feeling, that’s why I can’t get enough of it, and WHY?, every time they vocalize WHY?, so much emotion and longing there! Love Mona’s flute in Any Other Day, and Lisa’s cello in WHY?. Such brilliant musicianship.
