Day 12 – Orchestrated fun :-)

We had time to check out two videos today. A British classic and … well, another British classic. One is a comedy duo and the other a masterpiece performed by a Dutch youth orchestra.

As always, here are the YouTube links:

Andre Previn: Playing All the Right Notes! A tribute from the Morecambe and Wise Xmas Show 1971

A Day In The Life with orchestra – The Beatles (arr. Sam Haug)

We see something new and unexpected whenever we click on your submission links and we love the random nature about it.

Since filming this we have realised that we’ve seen several Morecambe and Wise clips before, especially the Beatles performances from the mid 60s, but now we finally know where that joke about playing notes in the right order originated! 😉

Thanks for continuing to hang out with us every morning and we’re already looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Stay groovy,
Mona & Lisa

  1. That was an edited version of that very famous Morecambe and Wise clip, and a year later the joke was about anyone appearing on that show being a career killer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQBOepTtiM8&ab_channel=CannedCarrott many of the actors and actresses who appeared in the clip would have been well known names in the UK at that time.

Have to feel sorry for the drummer in that, because it is very hard to try and replicate what Ringo did on A Day In The Life. Even great drummers would have found it hard to get the drum parts right.

  2. Yes morecambe and wise are magnificent …the Previn clip perhaps the very best …love your link to a day in the life clip thank you…
Tommy cooper always made me laugh out loud …just so natural and believable and such a likeable fella too …here’s a best of 5 minutes I love
    https://youtu.be/oTY6TxXsK-o

  3. I like the A Day in the Life by the Dutch orchestra video,The vocals and harmonies are beautiful. the Morecambe and wise Christmas video takes me back to time when I was growing up in the sixties and seventies watching similar shows . Thank you very much for sharing

  4. I just love sharing these Advent videos with the two of you every day. The worst part is that they have to end so soon. Is it really true about being able to have too much of a good thing? Perhaps… but it certainly can not apply to spending time with you! Thanks for another wonderful day.

BTW, do mp3 files eventually wear out like vinyl recordings? If so I’m going to have to replace your Christmas album before New Years Day.

  5. Some jewelry seems to suit distinctive musical eras.

The formative years of 70s Nixonian dance hall big gold watches then led to the Elvis Presley sequin-studded full-suit musical apparel crazes which then led to the all-too-distinctive 80s Disco appurtenances that make you smile. It all seemed to fade away with Hip Hop multiple neck chain gold distinctive wear.

Did anyone else notice the gonzo-sized gold chain that Lisa is wearing in the video? 😉

  6. OMG This was a very entertaing video and loved the Day in the Life. I am a sucker for choirs and kids singing. I watched Home Alone movie last night and the part of the film which Kevin goes into the church and the kids are singing is so beautiful ro me. But a great video Mona and Lisa and this is so cool waking up and getting my cup of coffee and just loving what is happening with Mona and Lisa and watching cool videos and just chatting! How cool is that? Cant wait for day 13

  7. That was Awesome !! … Was Finally able to access watching it without issues like I had earlier in trying to watch it when it froze/stalled at a certain point ….

Luv UK Comedy shows… Grew Up watching ” On The Buses “…. Benny Hill…. ” Absolutely Fabulous ” ….Monty Python… etc… and that Youth Orchestra.. Just amazing …In Awe ….

As far as Pronounciation goes.. I still gave issues with words/ names too…. and sometimes when I go to Pronounce.. My Irish/Scots Ottawa Valley Twang -Accent-Canadian accent will come out …
Thankyou for Day 12’s edition, your commentary, reactions…. I enjoyed the submission !!!!

  8. The comedy act with Previn was funny, but your introduction was funnier pronouncing the names, reading the backstory. You two should consider doing comedy sketches. I luvd your facial expression and reactions to both vids. I could tell you guys were really into the “Day in the Life” video. Priceless. Peace be

  9. Today’s submission seems to be playing all the right notes, and I figured out that the banned clackers toy from 1971 could be considered a musical instrument. It takes skill and coordination. Plus, they were only 25¢ when they first came out. I bought my first set of clackers for 98¢ in 1971.

Right away after watching this MLT video I remembered when The Beatles Anthology came out it had a hilarious Morecambe and Wise scene….

  10. Crazy music joking with the Beatles – none did it better than The Bonzo Dog Do Dah Band – here with a Sgt Pepper parody
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNXVC1A-ssk
And here is a colorized version of Jollity Farm
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwksszrDYNw
Have a nice day and try more Bonzo tunes 😉
And the last one is for the MonaLisa Twins with your national tunes – here is The Yodel with the American band Dr. Hook (1976) – it is great
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5PBvvvT7C8

    1. The Bonzo Dog Band was always funny, though I don’t think I heard these ones. It would be very politically incorrect today to play Ali Baba and His Camel.

  11. I am glad you like the shirts , they look so cute on you.
The comedy thing was very British for sure.
The youth orchestra and chorus was very good.
What was the largest ensemble you ever participated in and what did you do? How old were you?

    1. They are so cosy, perfect for winter. Thank you 🙂 We helped out on percussion for the local band and youth orchestra a few times during our early teens. I had a look in the archives and found this clip! Had to upload it to YouTube to show you. I forgot about the uniforms haha!!

  12. We are really getting quite a variety of videos! And they are all good! I think I saw a clip of the Beatles on that comedy show at one time, but I could be wrong.

  13. Hello Ladies,
Fun stuff today. The slapstick video was really good. It’s not easy to get the timing right, no matter how much you practice it. Once you go live it sometimes changes. That’s the beauty of slapstick humor.
The kids did so well with Day In The Life.
Not an easy task. And the different instruments and vocals all came together beautifully 😍
Thanks for the uniqueness of the videos today. Michaela is picking out really good order and videos. Loving the reactions.
    Looking forward to more fun.

    1. I remember Lehrer from That Was The Week That Was, introduced for the 1964 presidential campaign. David Frost and Buck Henry also appeared on the show.

  14. Good Morning.
Those youngsters playing “A Day in the Life” did a great job. And they were reading music while playing.
I thought it was interesting? when a while back, I found out that none of the Beatles could read nor write music. I guess they wrote down lyrics and maybe some chords. I believe that George Martin was the genius behind their songs and their success. Without Martin I wonder what may or may not have evolved and transpired in their careers???
Actually, there are many other successful musicians who can not read nor write music.

    Enjoy the day,
    Bobby S.

    1. It’s interesting that the ability to write good songs and being able to read music seems to have nothing to do with one another. I don’t think any of my favourite song-writers were proficient in music theory 🙂

We did learn some basics back in music school but it really doesn’t come into play much when we’re working on songs. We (Dad included) too cannot read or write music fluently.

George Martin’s theory knowledge must have helped tremendously for all the more classical arrangements and to bridge that gap between the Beatles’ ideas and the classical musicians they hired. He also just had an amazing ear and feel for arrangement and composition. None of which can be learnt through music theory.

      It really is fascinating.

      1. Wow love it, thanks for your insight Lisa! ❤ I remember when I started my career I utilized less than 10% of the theory I learned in school, it was all interpersonal, due diligence, intuition, creativity, courage, and hard work.

  15. Here it is day 12 – we are already half way done with the Twins’ Advent sessions. It’s been great so far – keep ’em coming Michaela!

  16. First of all, I am so glad that Mona & Lisa loved the mugs. Thank you for showing Sadie’s picture. She is a very sweet dog. I really liked the Dutch orchestra’s version of A day in the life; they did a great job! The other video was good also, good humor there. Looking forward to tomorrow!

    1. We LOVE them. Thank you so much for all the nice things ♥♥♥ And please tell Sadie she’s the bestest girl from us!

      1. I am so happy that you & Lisa love the mugs. You are very welcome! I can’t even begin to tell you how much your music has affected my life, & the lives of people around the world. All of the time that you spend interacting with people is unheard of in today’s world. I told Sadie what you said. She gave me a kiss to give back to you & Lisa. Thank you Mona!

  17. Arrrghhh, can’t get the YT video to play to watch today’s episode, it stalls, but I’m going to keep trying, wanna see Day 12, it’s up my alley, UK Comedy …. after I get to watch, hoping I can, I’ll comment more…Now back to trying to get it to play…

  18. Very cool and fun, very good choices. I must say that you both look even lovelier than usual, some intangible glint of…something, but it’s beautiful!
Loved the humor, reminds me of the days of Benny Hill, John Cleese and other famous British comedy acts.
The youngsters in the Dutch Orchestra and Choir were great! A bit of the lack of polished professionalism is refreshing to me, I agree in the hope that some of them made their way into the professional ranks. That is not an easy work to put forward by any means, amateur or professional.
Don’t feel bad that pronunciation sometimes evades either of you, English is my primary (practically only as I’m not fluent in French by any means) language being Canadian, and living out west. I still mess it up with names and other more difficult words and phrases. C’est la vie.
    That’s all I’m gonna say about that….;>)
    See yis tomorrow!
    D

  19. Another happy start to the day! I’m not sure which was more entertaining – the video clips or Mona and Lisa’s reactions! British humour is in a league of its own. The Morecambe and Wise clip reminds me of another British duo, Flanders and Swann, In my younger days as a french horn player, I loved their humorous rendition of Mozart’s Horn Concerto #4. (2) Flanders & Swann sing Mozart’s Horn Concerto – YouTube
The performance of A Day in the Life was very beautiful! It brought back memories of my days as a music student and the thrill it gave me to perform great pieces of music as part of an orchestra. It always felt as though I was being caught up in something bigger and more beautiful than anything I could conceive of as the harmonies washed over me, sweeping me away on a wave of vibrational ecstasy!

    1. That Horn Concerto … cover (would you call it that?) was delightful haha.
We played with an orchestra a few times back in school and you’re right, it feels amazing to contribute to something much “bigger” than your own playing. It’s such a good reminder of how people working together in harmony can create something much greater than the sum of its parts.

    2. I know exactly what you mean Jeannette. I played tuba in our high school orchestra and loved it. I was really honored to be chosen as the student conductor in my senior year and it was always a great thrill to conduct the entire orchestra.

  20. Good morning everyone! The comedy reminds me of Victor Borge. Did comedy with piano. I used to see him on the Michael Douglas show as a young kid throughout my teens. Here’s a clip I found.

    https://youtu.be/RtDX1Vl-Jxk

Here’s a clip I came across and forgot about while searching for Victor. Here’s Chuck Berry with John Lennon on the Michael Douglas show.

    Enjoy if you are interested.
    ❤️🌹🤘

  21. This was a fun morning, its great to see you girls laugh and smile. I can understand why you have trouble pronouncing the names. I always struggle with those names . For us dutch its sometimes hard to leave our accent behind. Certainly when your from the south of the netherlands, we are more used to the german language up here. I hope the next calendar days you will look as gorgeous as in the first 12 days. Love the sweaters, red suits you both well , just as orange does. Thanx for another great day , keep smiling and being groovy

  22. Most enjoyable! Both videos were well-selected and that that link to Lancashire. Especially enjoyed the Day in the Life video. The students did a fine job. Kudos to their conductor/teacher.

  23. Morecambe and Wise were a Brilliant double act here in the UK. Eric Morecambe died in 1984 so it isn’t surprising you haven’t seen them. My favourite double act of the present time are you Mona and Lisa, I can listen to you all day talking to each other . Listening to you trying to pronounce “Morecambe” was hilarious !

    1. Haha thanks Michael ♥ Afterwards we realised that we’ve seen some clips of them together with the Beatles before but didn’t recognise them in the Christmas clip. It’s also not a show that was broadcasted in Austria, I think. We love learning about these culturally important figures here in the UK. We sure still have a lot of catching up to do 🙂

  24. Eric Morecambe named himself after the seaside town (on the coast west of Lancaster, just up the M6 from you – there is a statue of him there I think) and was a comedy genius along with straight man Ernie Wise. That’s a great clip but you are right, all the bits about Mr Preview have been cut out!

Love the Beatles video as well, so emotionally sung, it was great. The 1967 video does have all the orchestra dressed up with funny noses along with lots of special guests from musical royalty at the time such as Mick Jagger etc.

Morecambe is in Lancashire so maybe that is the link between the two videos!

  25. “Bring me sunshine in your smile, bring me laughter all the while, in this world where we live there should be more happiness, so much joy you can give to each brand new bright tomorrow”. I just love Mor-com-bee and Wise.
Girls- you had me in tears with laughter this morning- Thank you x

  26. Warm greetings Mona and Lisa.
Your reading the notes and trying to get the names right at the beginning was just as hilarious and fun as the video. “I had all the right notes but not in the right order” cracks me up. It reminds me of the movie Amadeus, where the Prince tries to tell Mozart his music has too many notes, just drop a few and it will be perfect.

The Beatles music just has a magic about it, even when a group of students perform it in their own way, it can be so moving. Seeing you both react to the music and get moved by it, and your insight commentary is so inspiring always, and makes me appreciate the music even more.

Thanks for another wonderful Advent Calendar day. All the best with your work on your new video!
    Jung

  27. I love to see you laugh! And mugs have to be big. We have big mugs here in the US.
I’m glad Lisa got her glasses back with all the right parts in the right order!
Thank you for another cheerful video!

  28. I got goosebumps and teared up too. So beautiful. I’m not sure which was more moving, watching the video or watching Lisa.
