Scotland Camping Trip – Out & About

It was time to take our camper van on its maiden voyage …

… all the way up to Scotland! Last week we decided to take a little road trip and visit friends who recently moved up to Edinburgh. It’s finally gotten warm enough to get out there and we’ve been meaning to take a little break anyway. So, we grabbed another friend to squeeze into our van and set out for a little girls’ trip.

On the way up we also stopped by in the beautiful Lake District in northwest England before making it over the Scottish border.

While up in Edinburgh we did the local “Parkrun” there. Parkrun, a timed 5k running race, is really popular here in the UK, with over 1000 events taking place all over the country every weekend. During the run we bumped into … MLT Club member George S. ! What a cool coincidence! And it happened to be his Birthday, too! So, George, if you’re reading this, it was a pleasure to meet you and we hope you enjoyed the rest of your birthday.

As we had hinted at in our last MLT Club Wire, we documented our trip a little bit and cut together a short video to take you along the ride. We managed to cram a lot into our 5-day trip and made some wonderful memories that will stay with us forever.

Thanks for watching β™₯

  1. Nice trip! Thanks for taking me along with your vlog documentary. Beautiful city view. I wonder if the city has a height limit on its buildings. Charleston, South Carolina, here in the USA does, and it’s one of the characteristics of the city that makes it so charming. Edinburgh seems like a charming, beautiful and historic place like Charleston.
I am glad you had a safe trip and got to see your friends. Beautiful white kitty at the Castle. And, absolutely gorgeous horses!! I would have ridden in the inclement weather, too!

  2. Fascinating! A lovely Vlog that I’m sure you will enjoy watching many times, as I will. Never fear that we fans would not be interested in your personal adventures. Keep ’em coming!

  3. I get a big chuckle every time I see the last scene of the three of you in the cab rocking out to “I’m Walking on Sunshine”, trying to stay positive driving through the pouring rain! It looked like you were all doing a good job staying groovy and having fun! πŸ‘πŸ˜

  4. It may not have the groovy charm of your old vee-dub camper van, but you’re gonna have a blast in this modern version!
I’ve been around shires and seen them used as draft horses, but they’re seldom used for pleasure riding around these parts. I imagine someone less limber than you are would suffer hip pain or strained (“ahem”) muscles after straddling such a girth for a while. Yes, I know “groin” is a legitimately clean word for us grown-ups to use in conversation but the social stigma that accompanies it made censoring it seem worth a chuckle for us less mature types.
George got the ultimate birthday present! Any chance you might be in Freeport, Illinois on June 29th? PLEASE!?!?!πŸ˜ΈπŸ˜‰
Another marvelously fun vid, Ladies! Oh, and thanks for the snippet of Katrina and the Waves “Walking on Sunshine” at the end. It’s one of Mom’s absolute fave non-MLT songs and brought a smile to her face!

  5. Enjoyed your little trip video. Such a pity about the weather. You’ll be slightly frustrated to know that it’s been very sunny all this week! Also, so jealous of George who got to meet you considering you were so close to me!! Look forward to the next camper van trip!

  6. We call them a camper or just a van around here, not camper vans. Yours is the koolest. You all sure know how to pack a week’s worth of fun into a few days. And it sounds like it’s very scheduled. No, we are doing that on Monday.
It’s always interesting to see you out in public interacting with people. We are glad you don’t have to run and hide from screaming fans. Good thing George was able to maintain his composure.
We just love Wagner vacation photos. Thanks for documenting your trip. Soundtrack is groovy as always.

    Love,

    Marlo & J

  7. That was a great video! A lot done in just a few days! Did I see the bagpiper busker taking credit cards? It’s a new world.
    Lucky George, nice coincidence.
Must have been fun in the camper van. When I was a teenager (early 80’s) we did a long trip in a camper van from Buenos Aires to Sao Paulo, mostly up the coast. It was a VW bus, so not the fancy MLT van, but quite experience! Still remember it to this day.
I’m glad for the sharing of these every day life videos, it makes us feel part of the family.
    Thank you!

  8. So cool that you ran into George! Lucky guy!! 😊 Also, cool that you got to see the Zombies. πŸŽΆπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΏπŸ‘πŸ½ I love the adventurous spirit of you both ❀️ ‼️ The 5K, the city tour and those beautiful horses you rode! Otherwise, I’m good with missing out on Edinburgh.
We’re going to the “Garden of the Gods” in Colorado, USA, soon. I am looking forward to that. It’s a late birthday celebration and to visit some relatives. But, the two of you absolutely impressed me so much with your attitudes and adventures. Please, NEVER change!! πŸ’›β€οΈ

  9. Thanks for taking us along girls! Neat that you met another MLT Club member too! Lucky George! Happy Birthday George! Mine was on the 4th! The big 65.

  10. Glad you enjoyed Scotland and I loved the short blog on the trip. Beautiful country Scotland and a place I have visited many times mostly in the North East. Just home myself from a trip to the very north of Scotland (Inverness and John O Groats) and to Loch Ness (no sign of ‘him’ though). My next trip will be Loch Lomond and the Trossachs and up the west coast as it has been some time since I have been that side. The van looks terrific and I hope it brings you much joy and happiness. You need to take a break every once in a while. Keep the great music coming.

  11. Aye Scotland! Home of the reiving Johnston’s ! I got to visit Scotland about 5 years ago, it was absolutely beautiful. I hope to go back some day, and prowl around Liverpool too hoping to catch a glimpse of my 2 favorite musicians.
The van is really cool. It seems so useful. As my wife and I got older, we moved from tent camping to a camper so we had more room on rainy days to spread out. We sold the camper a few years ago when gasoline got very expensive.
Next time you are in Scotland, check out Annandale area, that is where the Johnston’s originated. I can give you names of some great sites and little towns in that area to check out, and you can experience how awesome Johnston’s areπŸ˜‰!

  12. I see for breakfast it was a very healthy avocados and tomatoes. I love how health conscious you both are, fitting in a 5K run on the trip too! You always inspire and push me up.

The guy with the bag pipe was great. Have you ever considered deploying a bag pipe in one of your songs?0 Just an idea. I always find the sound of bag pipes really alluring in a song. It’s rare in rock/pop songs but in the ones I know, it really added to it, like Paul McCartney’s timeless Mull Of Kintyre, and AC/DC did bag pipes in one of their best songs It’s A Long Way To The Top. The bag pipes made that song.

Those Shire horses were just majestic, must have been a wonderful 90 minutes exploring the countryside on them. I loved the last scene seeing you all rocking out to “I’m Walking On Sunshine” in the van.

Weiter so…

  14. I do so love these “Out and Abouts”! Now, with your Adventure Van, Im sure you’re gonna get out and about even more -and please don’t stop taking us along! (The van is gorgeous but you might want to take it back to the dealer to get it fixed cause the steering wheel is on the wrong side.) The Shire horses were magnificent. The tallest of all breeds. I always laugh when they give the shortest horse to the shortest person. Seems kinda backwards to me. Thanks for the adventure!

  15. It’s always a fun video when we get to see what you are really like away from the music industry. I for one can say that Im as attracted to your personalities as much as your music now after being in the Club for a couple years. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us.

  16. Wow I really enjoyed that and the music you used for each day…as soon as the first music clip started I thought I recognize this …my favorite song off the WHY ? album β€œDestination Sunrise”….I bet you made George’s day with meeting him…especially on his birthday…Best Birthday Present Ever George πŸ‘β€¦I always enjoy your vlogs …Thank You for sharing your private life with us MLT Club members ❀️🧑

  17. I am glad you got a chance to see parts of Scotland. It is very beautiful there even with the rain. You two deserve a holiday (vacation for Americans) break. You should see more of Scotland especially the Highlands. You will definitely find them mystical with the light rain and clouds going by. You two should write and record a song about Scotland.

  18. Thank you Mona and Lisa for this wonderful and fun video! I for one love when you share your journeys with us and I know that I will never get a chance to see that part of the world and it is everything people say it is and it is beautiful! So fun seeing the 5 K Race and meeting a MLT member, wow and riding the horses is fantastic. Also the music that you put with the video is perfect!! So glad you both got away to just relax and enjoy , we all need that from time to time to get our battery’s recharged and see the beauty the earth has to offer. So did this inspire any song writing? So Mother’s day is this weekend and Happy Mothers day to all the mom’s , step mom’s etc….Please send our love to Michaela.
God Bless and hugs and love from Bill and Maddie Isenberg Huge Fans from Pittsburgh PA USA

  19. This well deserved vacation was a good one based on all the smiles the video portrayed.

Scotland is indeed beautiful. I loved the footage of the city; the old buildings have so much character. I also thought that the horses were really cool.

I guess if one lives in the UK, you’d better like doing stuff in the rain! It certainly didn’t seem to bother you guys. I remember visiting my kids in Portland, Oregon on year. My son and I had a great hike planned, but it was raining hard that day. I thought we might cancel but he told me that if people in Portland let the rain bother them, they’d never get to do anything. It was one of my favorite hikes ever along what was then one of the world’s top scenic trails.

What a lucky break for George!

You need to take time to give us a walk-through of the van next time – it looks like a really cool one.

  20. Great!!! I will probably never make it to Scotland, but I do have on my bucket list to make it to London and Liverpool to do the Beatles tour thing. I also plan to visit a musician friend in England when I am there. But, Scotland looks beautiful. Mike.

  21. Scotland was very nice and wet. I was very impressed with the city of Edinburgh. The architecture was splendid. I loved the swans, they were so pretty. It looked like your trip was a rousing success. I enjoyed it immensely. The girl that was your friend that traveled with you seemed like a very nice person. Say hello to her from me. Thanks for sharing and stay groovy (and I know you will) :-).

  22. What a great way to travel, ladies. And about time you took some time off too!
You have been working hard all year long to spoil your fans with an album , photo’s and nice video’s. Thank you very much for this video. It is so nice to see some parts of your life. That mlt. Club member really was lucky to meet you and that on his birthday!! Enjoy next summer and hopely you can use your camper often without too much summerrain.

  23. That trip looked like a lot of fun. That van is just the right thing for cruising around that island you’re on.

I’ve never seen 18 swans together either. When I used to live on a lake, there was always only one pair of swans, and they liked having it to themselves. They insisted on it, actually.

I’ve never been to Scotland, but I’d love to go. I can’t just jump in the car and drive across the pond to get there though. When I think about going there, I always imagine a visit to a distillery or two mixed in. They do that pretty well..

I really enjoyed this. I love your music, and I love your travelogues too. You’ve been including some travelogue stuff bit by bit mixed in, but all by itself is great too.

It makes Britain more real, since I’ve only been there for a grand total of 2 weeks ever, and that was mostly London. Having your music in the background made it very authentic too, since that’s what my car always seems to play when I’m driving around.

    Thanks! Have a great weekend.

  24. Mona and Lisa…in addition to this video I have to say thank you again for “Orange”. It is high school baseball season during this time of year and I always play songs from the album on the way to the ballpark on game days. “No More Worries Company” always is playing when I leave my driveway followed by “Close to You”. “That’s Life” is my go-to song as arrive in the dugout. It always is a great way to start a fun afternoon!

  25. I will probably never get to see the UK. So really appreciate the video. That van really looks slick. Maybe later you will do a feature on it. On all your travel videos, you guys have the best sound tracks. I bet meeting you guys on the run really made George’s day. It would mine. Again thanks for the feature. Peace be.

  26. Thanks for taking us along in your trips mobile. Very pleased to see you on bikes, the best way to get around without generating greenhouse gas emissions.

George must have been beside himself, standing beside you in the Scottish fog, and wondering, “how in the cosmos did that happen?” Any other day…..

Tell your friend I want to be her friend, too. And by the way, wasn’t that her in the church hall assisting with the Questionable video?

And despite the variable climatic phenomena, which you might expect in Scotland, a note of positivity in the final seconds, with Katrina and the Waves, Walking In Sunshine faintly on the radio.

  27. We are all so fortunate to be a part of the MLT Club & go along with you on your adventures! Thank you for sharing this video with us!!! I’ll bet George will always remember this birthday. How cool is that?

  28. My GranDads family originated from Scotland.
What a Beautiful video, gorgeous countryside.

Edinburgh is a city filled with many cool trees and flowers.
Love the, Denistation Sunrise, road trip music.
Wow, George what a Groovy birthday present.
When I watch one of your videos, I think how lucky to be in the MLT Club.
    Thanks. Mona & Lisa !

  29. Looked like fun! Reminds me of my camper van adventure in NZ. 30 days, and it wasn’t enough to see everything. Seems that you saw everything you wanted. Hi, George!

  30. Thanks for sharing your trip with us. I actually missed you guys when you were gone. I kept checking to see if you were back and home safe. My great grand parents are from Inverness but I know little about the place other than binge watching Outlander. It’s a beautiful rugged land. Reminds me of up state New York. Thank you, Love you, Bonnie Lasses!

  31. It was a great trip, very beautiful landscapes and places in the cities they visited, I loved that they used summer rain as background music (I’ve thought about how the video would be and I already have an idea).
Thank you very much for sharing your wonderful trip and, as always, your smile.
I imagine George will be happy to have met them.

  32. OMG, it’s like you are re-living my life- everything is so familiar to me. And it’s great that you are now doing parkrun, but from your blog it appeared that Mona finished before Lisa! Am I correct? I do parkrun every week, either at Stretford or Dolgellau so it would be great to see you at one of these one day.
Are we going to hear bagpipes on a future song?? πŸ₯°

  33. Good to see you guys found time to get away and enjoy yourselves. Good for you!
Can’t believe you went to Scotland and didn’t play golf………..ha
    Glad you’re home safe!
Please give Michaela a big Mother’s Day hug from all of us.

  34. Glad you took some time off to recharge. You earned it! Thank you for “taking us along” and most of all THANK YOU for the Friday smiles! All the best. πŸ™‚

  35. Thank you for sharing your trip. Sorry it was wet on the day of your horse adventure. All in all it look like you had a wonderful time!!

  36. Thank you so very much for sharing this. Here in Wisconsin, USA, “going up north” means a trek to the Upper Peninsula of the State of Michigan, so it was fun to think of that phrase meaning places to which I’ve only dreamed of going! It is a gift to be able to share a little bit in the adventures of the MLT beyond the excellent music and videos. πŸ™‚

  37. Sorry the weather wasn’t helping! A great video and your cheerful personalities are a delight. Backing tracks very precise and good to listen to. I was especially pleased to see two Norwegian Elkhounds crossing the street with their owner. I used to have one just like the one on the left. Sam was a wonderful character.

  38. I just want to thank you both so very much for sharing your trip and your unbounded optimism. I think you have many additional gifts along with your music; you have a way of showing us that – even though the World is going somewhat bananas – you can always carve out your own moment, create your own positivity and enjoy the present moment superbly. I am truly grateful for those gifts. You are both such gentle souls with such love and acceptance. You actually give me rise to look at my own behaviors to try to adopt a similar outlook. Much love to you both. Brian

  39. Looks like you two had a great time…. and yes, The music that you chose with the video certainly fit the situation! I’m in Colorado now and we have had rain for the last two days and The skies are overcast as were in the video… that’s pretty rare for this area of Colorado… they say the sun shines 360 days a year… even if for just a few minutes! Congratulations on the camper van! I also have one that I can haul three motorcycles in the back…. I have seen videos of you two riding dirt bikes…?? Thank you so much for taking us along on your trip!

  40. You ladies pick such good songs for your vlogs. Although destination sunrise should have been destination fogrise! I enjoy these vlogs and photo shows. You are such rays of sunshine and positivity! Love you so much!

  41. Hello Ladies,
What a fun trip! Love the beautiful scenery!
Really liked your new house! It will take forever to clean though. πŸ˜† 🀣
What did you all like the most?
Taking a friend along made the trip even more memorable.
I know you didn’t let Mona drive Lisa, she just goes in circles and throws gravel everywhere. 🀣 πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜†
So glad you enjoyed your adventure. Thanks for taking us along and what a cool experience getting to meet a Club Member.
Always enjoy your Friday mail. Whether it’s a trip, music video, giveaway, or whatever it may be.
    Best always
    Rick Ross

  42. Great trip! Love Scotland too. Just one little question. On the sign in Edinburgh on the railings, it says, ‘do not feed the birds, it encourages the rats’. Funny how we never see these rats feeding the birds -maybe they need more encouragement! LOL….

  43. Wow, lucky George! Very cool that you got to take in the Zombies too.
The weather in the UK can never be guaranteed to be sunny, but you can pretty much guarantee there will be rain haha. I’ve never been to Scotland or Wales but I sure hope to. My last visit to Ireland it only rained twice in a week, once for three days and then once for four days;>} Em, did the fellow in the kayak ever get away from the shoreline? Those huge horses were awesome! Although they appeared to not be thrilled with the rain either.
But one thing remains constant in everything you bring to us: your ever present gorgeous smiles! And unless I missed it, you never introduced your friend…?
Thank-you for taking us along on your little camper trip, it was in the correct word “groovy”

  44. Thx for sharing your trip to Edinburgh with us MLT members and making Friday smiles once more. Really enjoyed the Vlog with your dialog and background music (done by an amazing band!) My wife took the hike up to the top of Arthurs Seat (I was not quite up to that on that day) and we both hiked up and all around Calton Hill. Wonderful city!! Many memories revived by your video. The Royal Mile and the Castle (which we also didn’t go into). There’s a street at the intersection where the Cathedral is right before you get to the Castle named “Johnston Terrace”. Whoopie!! The day we went there some animal conservatory group was exhibiting some small owls right on the sidewalk. Very cool creatures! Glad you got some sunshine and that looks like a really cool camper van!

  45. What a great trip! Such a cool camper van – and you got to meet and MLT Club member too. I love horses also, too bad it rained. I had forgotten that they drive on the left side of the road over there. I think that would confuse me, but I would love to have a car with right hand steering. I’m glad you had a great trip and thank you for sharing.

  46. What a wonderful birthday surprise for George! I remember visiting Scotland nearly 4 decades ago. Its rugged beauty was exhilarating to me. I, too, visited Loch Lomond and Edinburgh, and also took a boat across to the Isle of Mull and from there to the Isle of Iona, the site of a Celtic Christian abbey founded in 563. I also remember the misty, foggy weather. Thank you for sharing your trip with us!

  47. Wow, fabulous horses! Thanks for taking the time from your break to make this video. Beautiful and interesting scenery, great shooting and editing.

  48. Thanks for taking us along on your trip to Scotland. I like the Shire horses. The Amish community around my area still use them to work the fields. The weather looks about the same here, raining. Your vlogs always brighten the day. Thanks again.

  49. Ahhh that was so much fun, thank you for the vlog and taking us along!!! And what a special trip to see the Zombies, the 5K run, cycling, horseback riding, hanging out with some friends….and seeing one of us fans! That is amazing, and I got a feeling in the future that will become a more frequent thing as your music proliferate the world and more and more people discover you. George, wow that must have been amazing! I would have feinted! HAHAHA.

I remember a while back in one of the Ask the MLT posts you talked about getting a camper van and I think you mention Papa Rudi had a work in progress. I absolutely love road trips, the most fun way to travel, and wow what a way to do it in style and fun, in a camper van, and a gorgeous looking one. It was so cool to see you cooking and living out in the camper van on the trip.

That Scottish countryside looks beautiful, and love the rich history and culture, those castles and the elegant old Victorian style buildings. I really, really enjoyed this, Thank You! πŸ‘ πŸ˜€ So glad you both got to get away to a beautiful place for a while. 🌞 Your friends little dog looked so cute too, and looked like participated in the run. Loved the sound track to the vlog too, Destination Sunrise, Summer Rain….

  50. A well-deserved holiday! Glad that all of you had a good time. Guess that rainy weather is just a part of Scotland’s lore. Remember your friend from the “Questionable” Behind the Scenes video. It is awesome that you were able to see some live music. 5K is very impressive for not being in serious training, well-done!

    Thank you for the video!

  51. Aye but a wee bonny ol road trip to ye Scotland , ye ken ….loved watching this, wow, you crammed much in for 5 days, despite crappy weather, you made the most of it, and your new camper van looks fab… Now , seeing the city public transit buses, lol…I felt at home , as that’s how I get around as I don’t drive nor have a driver’s license in the city. Scotland , indeed has breathtaking landscapes, etc… I hope you’re planning to return there to explore further, do some video location scouting , meetup with more MLT Club members by chance…. Glad you got to meet MLT Club member George… Thankyou for bringing us along on this wee Vlog …” MLt Away in Bonny-Scotland, Aye, Ye Ken …. πŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ ΏπŸ’œπŸ€˜πŸ˜Š
