Our Skydiving Experience on Video – Out & About

On a trip, up in the sky …

For our 18th birthday back in 2012 we got one of the most memorable presents we have ever received … a skydiving trip!

In Austria, turning 18 is a big deal as it means you officially become of legal age. So, what better way to celebrate turning into an adult than using your first official signature to sign a waiver before jumping out of a flying airplane at 4000m (2.4 miles).

The whole adventure got filmed … this time not by our dad but a twin skydiver. Now imagine Papa Rudi staying behind on the grounds, watching his girls do such a thing and then not even being able to film it!

Well, we just cut and re-edited the footage for the purpose of scaring … errr sharing it here in the MLT Club. None of you have a problem with heights, we trust 😉 ?

Needless to say, the whole experience was unforgettable. We’re feeling the adrenaline kicking back in just from re-watching these clips!

Have any of you tried this or similar things like that yourself before? What was your experience like?

We love doing crazy things like that every now and then and have to say a huge thanks to Papa Rudi and Michaela for this “once in a lifetime” birthday gift … or maybe we’ll do it again one day? 😉

Take care … and take (calculable) risks,

Mona & Lisa

  1. I had long felt that jumping out of a perfectly good airplane was something that I didn’t need to do. It wasn’t that I felt that I was afraid to do it, just that I didn’t need to because I don’t feel like I am an adrenaline junkie. But then I found out that my 30-something daughter wanted to skydive. That changed my opinion. I thought that if she was going, I wanted to be part of the event. So we both jumped over the stunning California coastline. Our experience feels like it was pretty similar to yours. What a rush! Brilliant! Watching your video was like a flashback.

  2. I was able to see this from Papa Rudi and Michaela’s POV. I was the photographer on the ground for both of my youngest son’s jumps at his 21st birthday and on the day of his bachelor party. I’m happy to report both times were a success, but I still had a bit of stress on the ground watching for the chute to open!

Your video was bold and brilliant as ever. You couldn’t have used a better song than Club 27 for the ascent section!

  3. I would have been terrified, when I was a teenager I had no fear of heights when climbing but I couldn’t have sat in an aeroplane waiting to jump out. I have a recurring nightmare where I am standing on the wing of an aeroplane flying high. I have to drop on my knees and try to cling on. Its horrible.

  4. When I was in junior high school I read up on sky diving and how to pack the chute and everything else about it because I wanted to do it. I never went through with it and now I can’t believe I ever wanted to. Don’t like flying. Also have a fear of the water. Couldn’t even watch my kids learn to swim, had to leave the pool.

  5. That’s crazy to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. What a memory for your birthday. 18 was a milestone in the states too. (Legal drinking age). I don’t remember what I did but I’m sure alcohol was involved.

  6. Dear Mona and Lisa,
Absolutely loved the skydiving video! It reminds me of when I was in my 20’s
when I skydived on a dare. I loved it so much I kept on going for several years.
What a feeling of space around you as your falling. Nothing around but a bird below me.
    Congratulations! Dav S.

  7. Hi Mona & Lisa. I also did a parachute jump (many years ago) solo and under one of those round chutes that wartime paratroopers used. I remember having to run round the hanger in a set time or you didn’t get to jump and I only just made it! I was first into the plane so last out so my parents had a longer (worrying) wait to see me jump. My chute lines came out a bit tangled so I’d to do a few spins to straighten them out but after that it was all oohs and aahs on the way down. It didn’t help Mum & Dad’s nerves that one of the earlier jumpers had a hard landing (those chutes were like jumping off a 12ft wall) and the ambulance came clanging across – thankfully she was OK! After that they kept shouting at me to keep my ankles together – it evens out the impact! It was still jarring – I bit my tongue and knocked the trim off my helmet – but that didn’t dampen my exhilaration.
After watching your joyous journeys, I think I’ll repeat the experience with a tandem jump at age 70 (ahem, fairly soon!) … hope I get such a hunky helper. I’ll be sure to add a MonaLisa Twins soundtrack to pay tribute to your inspiration. Thank you both and Papa Rudi and Michaela for being such a talented, funny and uplifting presence in my life since I discovered you buying a politician. Stay groovy … so long as that doesn’t describe my next landing.???? With love and hugs.

  8. First, I love the little tune at the beginning of the video. The only other time that I heard it was in your gardening video. Is it an original?

On my 18th birthday, I had to take an Accounting midterm examination at University. Every year I had a midterm on my birthday, but earned an A each time.

Glad that you thrived during skydiving experience! Well-done ladies, and thank you for sharing your life experiences with your MLT Club members!

  9. Hi Mona & Lisa, I’m a bit of an aviation ‘geek’, so I definitely enjoyed your video – the aircraft was a Dornier Skyservant, haven’t seen one of those for a few years! Congratulations on your skydive, you looked as though you both enjoyed it, although I’d be a bit worried about someone who thought it would be a good 18th birthday present to push you both out of a perfectly serviceable aircraft @ 4,000m! I love flying, any aircraft, any time, but I’ve always had this strange, quaint idea that I’d still like to be inside the plane when it lands, know what I mean?!! Anyway, all the best, Stay Safe & as always, Stay Groovy. Andy

  10. How cool ! I always talk about my bucket list? Well guess what? Now I want to do this!! It looked like so much fun and it is breathtaking to watch from above. Thank you for sharing ! Love it!

  11. I can tell you even though I am a licensed pilot I am afraid of heights, as long as the windows are closed on the plane I am fine, open them to stick a camera lens out and I can feel every inch up. I have been told this is not unusual, many pilots have same problem. As for Papa Rudi, well I watched my eldest son make his first tandem jump on his 40th birthday so I can identify a bit with him. Proud and nervous hey Rudi?

    1. I think there is a different perception of height in an aircraft. Put me @ 40,000 feet in an A321 and I’m happy as the day is long – ask me to go 20′ up a ladder, I’m a nervous wreck! Hay, Ho. Andy

  12. Wow that was breathtaking…I personally am afraid of heights..I don’t know that I’d be brave enough to skydive….you mentioned “calculable risk”…I calculated keeping my feet on the ground…..loved your soundtrack with No More Worries Company (beware of crash landing) and I think my all-time MLT song Club 27…however you were safe as you were only 18 well short of 27….thank you girls for another Friday “high” ?

  13. I think you girls were born fearless. Or got there soon after the LA open mic. And that has made it possible for you to do all you do and for me to enjoy the exhilarating ride with you. Thank you!

  14. I don’t have any problems with heights…oh my you’re really up there! (Uurrrp) Ooh! I’m just going to close my eyes for a little bit. So did you get down ok?

  15. I’m afraid of heights and water. After some embarrassed moments, I’ve learnt how to swim, but I think won’t have the stomach to do what you did. Women rule!

  16. I used to jump from airplanes and helicopters as an annual requirement for my job and still do every once in a while for recreation. The sport is expensive and I don’t own any jump gear anymore. I tell people I used to be 6 feet tall until I started jumping (I’m 5’4″).

  17. That was great. Especially from my comfy chair. I’m not sure I would jump out of plane on fire, much less one that’s fine. Kidding aside, at 18 I may have done that, now not so much.
Don’t worry about your health, we’ll take take care of your wealth 😉
    Thank you for sharing!

  18. Jumping out of an air plane is kinda like jumping into the music business, correct? 🙂
It sure looked like you were having a lot of fun. I’ve never jumped but always thought I would like it.
Do you have the desire to do it again or was once sufficient? It was a great video and I enjoyed it immensely. Thanks for sharing!

  19. Beautiful! I love the video. So much fun and excitement. It was like being there. Now I don’t have to go jump out of an airplane to see what’s it like. 🙂 Thank you for sharing!! Lots of love!!

  20. Holy smokes! You are both so brave! That looked absolutely exhilarating, and something everyone should do at least once in their life! I can’t say I’ve done anything as cool as that, but you keep inspiring me. Really loved all the music in the video, and Club 27 was just perfect. Thanks for sharing that.

  21. Just brilliant Lisa and Mona, but please don’t do it again. We need both your feet on the ground!

  22. OMG, no way would I ever do that myself. Was a great video really fun to watch. About as close to that was mountain climbing in my much younger days or perhaps going about 60 miles an hour on my racing bike in my younger days.

  23. I never had opportunity…Congratulations you really did well..my daughter jumped from a ” “Body-Junp” I almost died of worry !!.

  24. Never tried it. I have no real desire to do that. I tend to like both feet on the ground…..except for airplane trips. But, I’m glad you two enjoyed it. I enjoyed watching it.

  25. OMG what fun! I never have but I would even today if I had an opportunity. I love your closing comment above, after all; “nothing ventured, nothing gained”.

  26. NOT ME! If I was papa Rudi I would have died. Jumping out of a perfectly good airplane??? NOPE! But I’m glad you 2 girls survived! PLEASE be safe!

  27. OMG… Insanely but yet awesome at same time…. Glad you got your guts in order and just went….. I was getting anxious and kinda dizzy watching you… And I don’t think that will ever be on my bucket list safe to say…. I’d rather be the audience watching from ground level…. But more power to ya… Maybe on your 30th or 40th you could do it again…?!…… Mona decided to channel Lisa’s vibe wearing red while Lisa, though it wasn’t yellow, channeled Mona…. Lol…. Would you do it again but going solo for each of you?!… I applaud your gumption of courage and stomach strength to Persevere….

  28. I’ll keep my feet on the ground but who knows what I would have done at 18 if the opportunity existed to skydive around here. It’s great that they had so much camera footage to give to the survivors. I liked the spectator seating also. Those were great seats to sit and watch your love ones plunge to their uh….. brilliant, exciting time. What an experience I’m sure. Was breathing difficult when you’re rushing through the air so fast?

    1. The breathing itself wasn’t difficult as far as we remember, but the hearing was! Both of us immediately got blocked ears (like when you’re in an airplane that’s taking off but 10 times worse) and the wind was so loud!
We thought the fall itself would be somewhat tranquil but boy, was it not. Fun, though 😉

  29. OMG! No I won’t jump out of a perfectly good air plane!
I go up and it next to window. When it comes to heights I am a Big Chicken. CLUCK, CLUCK, CLUCK!!!!.
Thank you for the amazing experience through your eyes. So happy you made it back safe. What an insane and very memorable gift.
Very much enjoyed hearing you speak German. Thank you for the English subtitles.
Have an awesome weekend ladies. ?❤
