Stuck In The Middle With You – Duo Session

Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right …

We’re probably not alone when we say that that’s how we feel A LOT of the time. Have you tuned into the news recently? 😉 Thankfully, whenever we need to restore our faith in humanity, decency and kindness all we have to do is hop into the MLT Club. Guess we’re all stuck in the middle with you groovy lot ♥

We hope you’ll enjoy our “Duo Session” rendition of this ‘Stealers Wheel’ song from ’72. But here’s a warning – the tune will be stuck in your head for the next 3 days – it’s one of those!

Peace and love to you all, thanks for being here and of course … stay groovy!

    1. Thorsten,

I saw that posted on YouTube but didn’t watch it until your suggestion. That is a very nice version of the song.

      Thanks! — Bud

  1. That is one beautiful Telecaster. I think it really sounds great. Of course a fine tool is only as good as the operator. Nice guitar work by both Lisa and Mona. Great song all around. It makes me smile.

  2. This is a fantastic song, I love it. Mona you look so happy to sing it. Mona& Lisa your cover is better than the original. This song should be on Duo Sessions two, I hope so. Merci

  3. Big snowstorm in Western New York State overnight and my wife and I just opened up our driveway and sidewalks. Snow to the left, snow to the right (darn clown and joker snow) and I was stuck in the middle with her. And it was okay.

Mona and Lisa, thanks for this wonderful rendition of this Stealers Wheel song. Got us through the shoveling and snow throwing!

  4. The Boots are great. Send me a pair of Men’s, the colors are great. This song is a fun song to play and your right I will be walking around singing it for the next 3 days. Good sond choice for Duo’s. Stay Groovy. Happy Birthday!!!!!!!

  5. Another song that suits Mona taking the lead. Another great Duo Session. Loving these stripped down melodies. More please.

  6. Love this stripped down version! Sounds awesome and the bass line on the Tele sounds great. Is this the first outing of the Tele? I don’t remember seeing it played before.
The Martin sounds heavenly, absolute perfect balance.
Seems this song was written 50 years early. It’s a clown ???? world indeed!
I love how much fun you are having while playing!
    Thank you.

    1. Thanks Tomás! Yes, I believe it’s the first time showing it on video. I might have played it on a recording or two, and I practise a lot on it and use it for family jam sessions 🙂

  7. As delightful as ever!! So now we know the secret of the Telecaster!

I play it in G on a 12-string, a-la the Beatles’ “You Can’t Do That’! Mainly because I segue the two together!!

  8. The guitars sound so good (is it a “Drop D” tuning?) and Mona is so beautiful…Great version!

    1. Thanks Lior, we’re glad you like it. 🙂
Yes, I used drop D tuning on my acoustic, it does a lot for this song!

  9. Brilliant!! A great tribute to a song which, if I’m honest, was never one of my absolute favs, but you really brought it to life. Brought the 70s back to life for me, too. And on the video, it was clear that you were both really enjoying yourselves. And you’re right, the track is really ‘stuck in the middle’ of my brain now!!

  10. This was always a fun song to listen too and y’all have made it more fun than ever. It has a nice rough edge too it too, just like a live performance should. Another wonderful effort – I can’t wait until you decide to do a second Duo Sessions CD. Plus, it was lovely seeing a Telecaster is there when you need it!

  11. Excellent choice ! Stealers Wheel was Gerry Rafferty´s “Baker Street) second band after The Humblebums. Your performance makes honor to the song. Happy new week, girls !

  12. Hi Mona, Hi Lisa, you both have skills to play any kind of music, with some rehearsal you will be able to play erudite music, contry music, jazz, blues or Heavy metal .. you’re versatile so much. I loved it (again). wow Mona what a nice rhythmic guitar, lead vocal and boots. Lisa great job on the Fender telecaster ..and vocals too..You look is wonderful.

  13. This is the sort of song that makes you want to put on your boots and go dancing. And speaking of boots, I think Mona’s boots might be the craziest, most “far out” boots I have ever seen.

For me this song was just plain fun, and nicely done as always.

  14. “Maybe I’m Amazed” … The fact that you stay true to whatever song you cover, but still manage to make it yours is truly wonderful! I especially love the pure sound of your “Duo Sessions”. I have been down lots of YouTube “rabbit holes” listening to artists that I hadn’t heard before, but your songs never disappoint. This one is no exception! Looking forward to hearing what’s next. Perhaps “Happy Together” from The Turtles? Thanks for the great music!

    1. Thanks, Brian! We know these rabbit holes only too well and are glad one of them brought you to our music.

We’d love to give “Happy Together” a proper try sometime but it might be better suited for a full studio recording than a Duo Session. So who knows when we’ll get around to that but it’s one of those songs that’s on our minds often.

      1. Hi Mona! Thanks for the reply! You and Lisa have such wonderful harmonies and I enjoy watching how much fun you have with your videos. They truly are a joy to watch and brought a smile to my face on many a dark day over this past year of Covid. I could watch “Bus Stop” all day and still laugh when you appear as the bus. Or the look on Lisa’s face when she realizes that she actually hit you with the hammer near the end in “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”. You both keep it real and fun! I’m really looking forward to your next Duo Session video.

  15. I can’t think of anyone that I’d rather be stuck in the middle with than MLT!
Great performance. I’m gonna listen to it again, now!

  16. I’ve seen several versions of this song recently and I have to say this is my favorite! Mona has the perfect voice for this song and Lisa! Incredible picking on the guitar, both bass and lead! So impressive! I agree with Rick that my favs right now are this song and Vincent! You ladies just keep getting better and better!

  17. Well so far as the new Duo Sessions are concerned my two faves at the moment are Vincent and Stuck in the Middle…you girls truly put life back into songs that have long since been dead…you are incredible ❤️????

  18. You surprise me again and again with your selection and interpretation of songs of the 60´s and 70´s. “Stealers Wheel” was one of my favorite bands of that time. I´m looking forward what comes next! Keep on going, girls!

  19. M-O-N-A, Mona

Your voice is perfect for this. Lisa’s Tele sounds awesome. Finger picking like that always amazes me.
I think we have all had moments at school, at work, on the highway, where we stopped and looked around and this song pops into our head.

Thanks for the ear worm ????
    Here’s to a great weekend

    JP

  20. It’s been ssssoooo long since I’ve heard that song I had forgotten all about it…but now I’ve got clowns on the left and jokers on the right…I’ll never forgot it….actually in everyday real life I swear I’m surrounded by idiots …but now you have given me something “new” to swear by….LOL???? Mona those boots look pretty wild and ooh my you brought life back to that song with your vocal….Lisa that was some pretty darn good finger picking and I’m greatly impressed…why I don’t know…because you two girls keep blowing the lid off everything…your talent is beyond belief….here’s to Duo Sessions Too…..Too=Also❤️????

  21. Oh my!!! I just don’t know what will come down next!!! Country never sounded so good, smashing good. Sounds so right! Absolutely loved how you did this one. Those country vocals, you both did it magic, and loved that twangy guitar work. There is nothing you can’t do, pure music magic, I’m so impressed, uncontrollable ear to ear smiles and joy. Love those funky boots Mona! 🙂

    1. Your comment “country never sounded so good” I think is absolutely right….if I was still DJing country music I’d have MLT with the clowns and jokers on at the top of every hour….Lisa’s guitar work on this is fabulous doing both bass line and lead simultaneously and Mona is having a blast singing….another song MLT does with a country flavor is off their Christmas album Walking in the Air…I really like the country scenery on the video and again Lisa has that special feel for just the right sound on the guitar and as always I love Mona’s drum work…….my last day on the air as a country music DJ was June 15, 1994 and MLT was born the next day…that may be my ONE CLAIM TO FAME……LOL????love those girls❤️????

      1. Couldn’t agree with you more Rick! What a coincidence June 15 1994. The birth of a new musical era on the following day! 🙂

  22. Well, you’ve shoved me back to my youth again, one of my all-time favs and you’ve done it proud! I know you love the songs you love, but sometimes it’s more apparent than others, and it’s plain this is one you’ve been holding for just the right moment. Well done, fantastic, and if a Duo Session tour has crossed my mind, I’m sure it’s crossed yours.

One quick aside, for another great cover of this check out The Jeff Healy Band. Jeff’s sadly no longer with us but he released a cover album of tunes he loved and it’s worth a look.

  23. Ha! Ha! Ha.. y’all are stuck in my head most of the time! ????❤???????? I love that song and don’t mind having your cover of it stuck in my head for days. Loved your work on this one and how you made it, at least to me, sound like more than just two people. ????
Great sound! I will be glad when you make it public so I can share it. Love, love, loved the cover ❤!
I hope you all have a fantastic weekend. Thank you for making me feel happy. ????????‼️

  24. Well, it is an overcast, windy and rather gloomy day here today but this duo session has brightened the day up like it was the 4th of July! You have done it again with your super ultra groovy, rocking and smiling, foot-taping, smooth-as-silk, session. An unsuspected but totally awesome choice of tune… again! I don’t know how you did it but you made it sound like you had a whole band behind you. Incredible performance, sooooo groovy! THANKS!!!

  25. As usual, another great performance of a classic!!
Have loved this song since its original release, and Mona & Lisa, you are both alot easier on the eyes than the guys in Stealers Wheel.
Thanks for Brightening up Another Day.
Love to all at Team MLT

Hey Mona!! Love the Boots…they’re Groovy!!

  26. ? loved this – Question for the Twins ?? would you allow me to post my version ??? or a harmonica remix of yours ???

  27. WOOOOOW – fantastic – a tune I never thought you would ever cover but your version is ACE – as you said one of those tunes that will haunt you – and it does !!! – can still remember all the words from when I used to play in a very amateur school band at that time – now play a better Harmonica cover than my vocals ever did – Brilliant – BUT PLEASE – PLEASE DO NOT PLAY “MULL OF KYNTIRE” it may be a Beatles tune(Paul’s) but from one who grew up with it – I really have heard it enough – lol – Nah only joking – a suggestion ?? – it’s a great simple song that I’m sure you would do brilliantly !?

  28. Omg! Just when I think I can’t be in even more awe of your talents! What a great song, and this version has it all – MLT voices, Mona’s perfect rhythm strumming, Lisa with the amazing fingerpicking on the neck pickup; both ladies looking absolutely stunning, love the longer hair on both of you as well. Beautiful outfits, and of course Mona found boots to match her blouse. Thanks for a wonderful Friday treat – just for MLT Club? It is fantastic how awesome you are – I’d enjoy watching you ladies rehearsing.

  29. Mona – I can tell you are really into this song… love the vocals and the soulfulness! Such a great cover. If I had to be stuck anywhere… I would want to be stuck with you two… with a couple guitars! I believe this song was the inspiration to Sheryl Crow’s “All I Want to Do”, which fits the mood… and is a suggestion for a future cover.

    1. Interestingly Sheryl Crow crossed my mind too. If It Makes You Happy, All I Wanna Do…There is nothing Mona and Lisa can’t do great indeed!

  30. WOW! I am off today and sat here watching and playing my air drums and cow bell along with you!!! Great Song indeed and Jerry Raferday is smiling for sure. Love the boots Mona and Maddie will love them too when i show her this video when she gets home from school today. Lisa great job with the guitar riffs, you must have a great set of thin strings on your guitar to make it sound so awesome. Again you both deliver the goods to us in this wonderful club that I am so proud to be a part of. Agree with Jacki, this song was a favorite of mine from 72 and man you both are spot on with your vocals!! Thank you so much and please keep it coming. So do I get the feeling…..Duo volume 2 on the horizan?

  31. This begs the question, which one of you is the Clown and Which is the Joker?
If you go by the way you are seated, Mona is the Joker and Lisa is the Clown. Some how I think this is reversed.
ENCORE! ENCORE!! What an Amazing choice of Songs to cover, and vocals!? Holy Cow!!! Perfect choice to have Mona sing lead. Speaking of which LOVE THE BOOTS MONA!! Are those the ones that walked all over you?????
Thanks ladies for a Splendid Duo Session!!
    The very best indeed
    Rick Ross

  32. ))) hi, beauties

Tks for the song and your spesial performance

It’s like honey to the heart

Colorful robes, boots etc – to fit girls – look good)))

Let the time be kind to you, to all of us,

    Stay groovy

  33. Whoa…one of my all time fave childhood 70s song memories that I always loved from the get go and would sing along whenever I heard on the radio… Kudos on your take of this, I love it and you’re accurate, it will now happily stick in my head, I may even try to find it on an online Karaoke site I’ve been singing on , if I can find the right other singer to duet with on, Thankyou for doing a fave 70s childhood song of mine, brought back fond childhood memories of radio listening, now I’m inspired … Happy Groovy Wknd????☮????

  34. It’s just amazing how often you two take a weak/mediocre pop song from the 70’s and make it fresh and listenable with two guitars. IMHO.

Rafferty was a very troubled soul.

Try something from City to City or Moonlight & Gold when you feel up you it.
I’m sure Mattie would enjoy it.
    Nice job.

  35. This song has been stuck in my head since 1972…in a good way!. Always gets me singing along every time I hear it. Your version is wonderful…this made my day!

  36. That made my day! Possibly weekend! Truly feel “stuck in the middle” with the MLT club in general and you two in particular, but VERY happy to be there! Clowns and jokers seem to surround just about anywhere else. Can’t wait for your next “Duo Sessions” album! Oh, and diggin’ the GROOVY boots!

  37. Oddly, this song has been stuck in my head for the last month. Really enjoyed your take on the song. Keep ’em coming!

  38. I was in the middle of the song and had to turn it off because I got stuck giving shift report to a clown coworker nurse. Excellent song choice! And always love how you put your magical signature on every cover that you sing!!!
