The Wide, Wide Land – Behind The Scenes – Video & Photos
“The Wide, Wide Land” was the second song off our debut album “When We’re Together” that we released a video for. It’s still one of our favourites.
When people think of Austria they usually think of mountains and the alps but where we are from (the eastern part) everything is flat as a pancake. It’s the very scenery our grandma grew up in and the landscape that regularly made her stop on her afternoon strolls to theatrically call it “The Wide, Wide Land” – the phrase that inspired our song about her.
Relatively speaking, we were still pretty new to the world of video making when we started working on this video, and we explored a lot of editing techniques and tricks that were completely new to us at that point.
Dad spent weeks capturing the perfect time lapse skies with a camera hidden under plastic buckets, wrapped in bags to save them from getting wet, in the fields around the neighbouring villages.
To implement the skies in the video we had to learn a lot about keying and overlaying and working with Adobe After Effects. Our first explorations into the video magic world!
For the day of shooting with our friends in the “marching band” we even hired a professional drone camera operator. It’s crazy to see how far the drone technology has come since then. Now Dad owns a few himself that are all a fraction of the size of the big octocopter we used for that shoot. They are now stabilised, shoot in 4K quality, are way easier to fly, the batteries last so much longer and and and. All in a matter of 7 years.

I ‘ve always loved that song, it’ s specialness to you and me and all that can relate to it… The video indeed is complimentary to it, though you froze somewhat weather wise that day making it..
