Filming “California Dreamin'”– 2008 – Photos

We filmed three music videos during our one-month stay in California back in 2008. The one that took us to the most locations by far was The Mamas and The Papas’ “California Dreaming”. That video took us everywhere!

We basically captured our whole exploration of the state on camera and used so much of it in the music video one way or another. Combining holidays with shooting videos – something we still seem to do 😉 So here are some more photos of our adventures across California!

First, the Sequoia National Park, then the Yosemite National Park, then a bit of Los Angeles’ beaches and lastly us by the famous Hollywood sign.

We have to admit, the Hollywood part feels a lot less glamorous these days. However, that didn’t stop us from having the time of our lives back then and thoroughly enjoying the state and all its quirks.

From flashy Hollywood, to incredibly impressive landscapes and tranquil forests, California has so much to offer and we are sure we didn’t even scratch the surface on this trip – and believe us, we tried!

  1. I thought that crooked and bent tree you are sitting on looked familiar. Yosemite Valley, CA. Summer 2014 for me, Katie and grandson Malcolm.

    1. Ha! Small world! 😀 That’s a lovely picture and your grandson must be so much taller now. All the best to all of you!

  2. The pictures sure take me back to when we were there back in the 1980″s and 90’s. My wife just loves the Sequoias. She is still so excited to see just a picture of one. Thanks for sharing, great memories.

  3. Your photos let me remember my trips to California in the ´80s and ´90s. Most of the places you visited I have seen as well. My last trip was in ´93 with my late wife from L.A. to New York with a motorhome. We did it in 4 1/2 weeks. I hope you´ll make such trips in the future too. The world is such a lovely place to see. Love Frankl

  4. Spectacular photos as usual! I visited the L.A. area back in 1981 for 2 weeks. I was hoping to experience an earthquake but alas, it never happened. It was nice but a bit too laid back for this New Yorker!

  5. Love any photos of you both and your family.
From your Two of Us video I know you are both born adorable and these pictures further confirm that. Papa Rudi has a great knack for capturing the mood as well as the scenery. Absolutely loved the cowboy hats, and it’s always nice to see Michaela! Thanks for helping me realize how many places you visited to complete those wonderful videos. Personally I would love to see some more MLT baby photos…

  6. It’s fun to see pictures (and videos) of you in the land where I grew up. It makes me want to visit Austria to see the places where you grew up. Hopefully, my wife and I will have that opportunity to take a river cruise on the Danube in a few years.

  7. Thank you for sharing! The beauty is , it looks like you had a good time and took pictures that no one would take when they go to California. So this shows how much beauty there is. Pa and Michelle looked like they had a good time too! So would you want to go back agan?

  8. Ahh, that smoky bear looked so cute with the cub following behind. What awesome photos, looks like you all had such fun times in California creating your three absolutely beautiful videos! Great to see many scenes that look familiar from the California Dreaming video. You both look so natural on those horses with your ten gallon hats. The shots from Yosemite remind me of my fond time through there in 2004. If you get a chance, check out a documentary movie on netflix called “The Dawn Wall” where a couple of mountain climbers climb the big “El Capitan” rock in Yosemite. Some nail biting adrenaline pumping moments bring back some nice memories of Yosemite, especially if you’ve experienced the place. Southern California always lures me back there, has a natural magic. Love the photo of the both of you walking along Hollywood Blvd over the stars playing your guitars. Thanks for posting these photos, thoroughly enjoyed them! 🙂

      1. Hello Jung, no these are local climbers; Jim-Bridwell-John-Long-and-Westbay-1975. They have just climbed “the Nose” in one day. There are three great mythical rock wall in the Yosemites; El Capitan, Half Dome and the Nose. This is an image from a 1983 book “Yosemite Cimber” by George Meyers. This was my version of California dreamin ‘. These guys were my heros. I was 14 years old at that time, when I start climbing. I have always dreamed of going to the Yosemites to follow in their footsteps but I never had (or took) the opportunity. This is why the photos of the Twins and your commentary made me so happy.

  9. When my friends offer to show me their vacation photos, it’s often a regretful OKay, sure, let me see. When Team MLT offer to show their vacation photos, it is an enthusiastic YES PLEASE. These are incredible. There was a little more twin resemblance when you were younger. I am challenging my wife,”Hey honey, is this Lisa or Mona?” She got it right except for one. I think I spotted a Lisa-Mona pose, very rare.????

I like that you were also watching for Pigs On The Wing.

  10. Beautiful. This is some of the best that California has to offer. Hopefully everyone has a chance to see these places.

  11. Absolutely stunning photos of that 2008 California trip, in the month’s time you spent there, indeed you captured so much, whoa, love all of tge pix, I will say though, next to those Red Cedars, I’d be an ant, ewok, etc…lol … those are massive trees….
“California Dreamin” cover, ah, the cover song in which I pleasantly stumble upon by you on YouTube, all those groovy moons ago, become instantly and life long # MLTBuzzLuvGroovified. Something magical in a sunrise, sunset, regardless where it is viewed but in California, it seems to intensify in it’s splendor, Thankyou for sharing these photos, definitely a groovy time had by all ????

  12. My favorite photo is the one with the girls holding Papa Rudi’s hands. Also the ones with stepmom Michaela. The family love and dynamic continues to this day. So groovy!
