Wish You Were Here – Duo Session
Pink Floyd – it’s hard not to love them or at least respect them for their ground breaking original style, profound lyrics, themed albums, …
We’ve been into Pink Floyd since our teenage years. We even went to see Roger Water’s “The Wall” tour back in 2013 and left the stadium mesmerised and floating on a natural high.
Yet we have never covered one of their songs. We sure learned the solo parts for “Another Brick In The Wall” and worked hard on the smooth bends and fluent runs, but most of their songs didn’t lend themselves too well to be covered by 2 guitarists or a 4 piece rock ‘n’ roll band.
But then there’s “Wish You Were Here”. A song with a purported backstory so sad that it’s hard not to get emotional when reading up on it. A tragic masterpiece, partially inspired by their lost band member Syd Barrett (or at least open to interpretation).
We thought it would be a great choice for a duo session …
We hope you like this one! ♥
Mona & Lisa
I put this on repeat in the car. I just listen to it for half an hour or more at a stretch. It’s magnificent. I’m so happy that I came across your music. Duo Sessions 1 is one of my favorite CDs, and it lives in my car, along with Live at the Cavern Club; I’ve just got a thing for live music! I appreciate your originals (especially “June”, which sounds like SOMEBODY in the ‘60s must have had a hit with it, back then!), but a part of me thinks you could do nothing for the rest of your lives but put out more Duo Sessions volumes… L O L O L…Best wishes from the North SF Bay! 👍🏼👏🏼
This is just next level. There’s good music and great music and then there’s the stuff on the top shelf. This is up there.
You both did such a great job on this Rendition, probably the best I have ever heard. It is doing very well on You Tube as it should!!!! Congratulations on a Fantastic Song!!!! Stay Groovy!!!!
Your cover of Wish You Were Here never ceases to move me, from those beautiful guitar works to your magnificent vocals and harmonies. Interestingly I came across a few popular female groups on youtube who covered this song too. Some of their guitar work is great like yours, but man when your vocals and harmonies kick in after the long guitar piece, it’s like an emotional supercharger kicked in, you leave everyone in the dust! “We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year…..” Your vocals and harmonies are remarkable and incomparable. Has grit, heart, and feeling and remarkable beauty. It’s what grabbed me when I first heard your San Francisco, and never let go. ????
Every time I watch this Duo Session, it becomes my new favorite.
(at least until I watch a different one). You two captured every nuance of the original. A smile from a veil
JP
Absolutely brilliant! Breath taking guitar work matched my superb vocals. You two make everything look effortless though I’m sure this piece took some working out. I’d love to know how you decide which one is going to sing and play which part
Wow!! Fantastic cover of a Pink Floyd classic. Mona and Lisa you are amazing, is there anything you can’t turn your hands? Because I love everything you have done. You girls are the very best.
As always, another fantastic cover and a great song choice. Sublime playing with vocals and harmonies to match! Loved the guitar work and 12 string which certainly added another dimension. Thanks for sharing to fan club members.
Such beautiful Harmony
Great song also I remember it well.
I from one got to say I loved it. A very nice surprise. And Mona, LOVE THAT HAT!!!❤️❤️
I am continuously astounded by the pure beauty you two can create with just two guitars and your magnificent voices. I never thought justice could be done to this epic song acoustically but you have done it majestically. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Very nicely done – loved it!
It brings me feelings that I don’t know how to express, but it’s good. It’s difficult to add something to a song that is already perfect, but you did it. Great cover! By the way, I liked the “Peace and Love” on Lisa’s wrist. It’s in the hands of the young ones
Oh wow! Lisa you play as well as David Gilmore (one of my fav guitarists) and Mona! Your ability to harmonize both low and high blows me out of the water! Love the ringing of the 12 string! Love, love, love to you both!
Well said Michael. On the guitar, Lisa can stand with the best of them in the company of legends! And seeing Mona play here, and other videos, she’s no slouch on the guitar either, quite impressively awesome too.
Well, I just watched for the third time… this time with headphones. It’s unbelievable how your voices soar on this. Obviously one of the most heartfelt of Pink Floyds songs, you really capture the feelings and emotion that this song demands!!! Again… I LOVE IT!!!
I love Pink Floyd as much as I love Beatles (and you) so this really hit me hard. Really good job ladies. That wordless singing sounds heavenly and I got shivers in that part !
At the risk of getting kicked out of the MLT, I didn’t like this duo session quite as much as I love them usually.
I think it’s because of the capos. The guitars don’t quite sound as lush and full as they would otherwise.
Harmonies are fantastic as always.
Anyway, my 2 cents worth.
Joking about getting kicked out, I hope 🙂
It’s not the capos – a properly applied capo will change the pitch but not the tone. I think it’s Mona’s guitar. It’s a concert sized body which has a little more “mid-rangey” sound than the dreadnought or jumbo guitars that Gilmore and Waters use when they perform it (most of the time anyhow). I love it- it fits their voices well, and has a great balance with their style of playing – a dreadnought probably would have been overpowering in that setting.
Could the difference be just a result of the Pink Floyd original is a studio perfected sound where everything is optimized for that lush full sound, versus a live one take raw sound of an acoustic duo session here. Maybe my ears aren’t as discerning, but the guitars sound great on both versions.
My Favorite Pink Floyd song. Great lyrics and great guitars.
This Duo session has touched me quite deeply.
Love the new vocal arrangements, speak to the core of the song. If there was one Pink Floyd song I’d want you to cover, it would be this one. Thank you for reading my mind and my heart.
Can’t stop watching / listening.
Have we seen the Breedlove 12 string before? I don’t remember seeing it in a video.
Well, Angelo seems to always have the answer. In the “Morning Has Broken” video Mona also played this Breedlove 12 String. Which seems to be a “Solo Concert” but without the soundport and does it have electronics?
I thought it was a “Solo Concert” too, but I haven’t seen one with Ivroid purfling. The ones I’ve seen are black. It’s either old or it may be a “Masterclass”. I suspect it has electronics, I thought I saw shadows of a cable and the sound is a little sterile for being miked.
After listening to this many more times today, I just have to add that you are both so polished in your guitar playing, so perfectly balanced and tight throughout. Musicianship at its finest! Your harmonies in particular really add another dimension to the song. I notice when you sing here, both your voices are slightly offset from each other to form a beautiful and irresistible chord effect, that the vocals in the Pink Floyd version is missing. You elevate the song to another level for me! I do indeed like your version more, and this song and the whole album I am very familiar with, as it was one of the few modern, at the time , albums I really got into in my teens and my first foray into Pink Floyd. It was my brothers album, and I often listened to it on my dad’s high end stereo, lights turned down, and as loud as those massive 100 watt speakers could handle the highs and lows of those magic electric guitar howls, and house shaking synthesized elevator and machine sound effects from the album! Wish You Were Here track in particular with the acoustic guitar riffs sounded especially sweet I remember, and Shine On You Crazy Diamond followed by Welcome to The Machine made me feel like I was traveling through space. It felt surreal. So when I hear you do “Wish You Were Here”, and do it with such justice, you know what I mean when I say it sends shivers! Learning about the story behind Shine on You Crazy Diamond and Wish You Were Here and how it relates to the bands founding member Syd Barrett, makes me appreciate that album even more. It’s the closest thing to a modern day symphony!
Wonderful! My favorite Pink Floyd song, one of my top five all time favorites, and one of the first things I learned to play on a 12 string. The harmonies were impeccable.
Yes, another inspired cover with their “magic” touch. ??
In rural upstate New York, we had to do with AM radio; top ten tunes and frantic DJ’s, until the early seventies when FM became a thing. We could only get one station though, WAAL (the Whale) out of Binghamton, and late Saturday nights they would play album sides that you just knew were introduced by a guy with a ponytail in a smoky, dimly lit studio, with a voice like warm molasses. I can’t say with certainty that I heard this song while lying on the floor next to the JBL’s, on a stereo system that had an equalizer(!) but it’s highly probable. A melancholy song with incredible musicianship that this duo session fully respects, and displays that respect with a spot-on interpretation that makes it MLT. If you keep doing this sort of thing, we’ll have to lobby the Oxford English Dictionary to recognize “MLT” as a new adjective. Well done, and thanks Team MLT, which come to think of it, will also need to be added as a noun.
I love all your Beatles videos, but this is one of your best by far for doing another band, and it has always been one of my favorite songs, super fine job!!
Well done ladies! Wish you were here is a great album. I saw them back in the 80’s at Giants stadium. We were WAY UP in the bowl of the stadium (they looked like ants down there!) but the sound was great. COLD night though. Their giant pig was even floating around the place.
Wow wow wow wow what a perfect performance this one has blown me away its without doubt one of the best videos you’ve done well.done girls you’re amazing.
Absolutely wonderful!!!
Love subtle reference of the triangle on your neck Lisa. 🙂
Another spectacular job. Loved it! Fridays are the best days ever when new Duo Sessions come out. You two are amazing. Your voices and guitars are some of the brightest lights in this world.
Pardon my ignorance but I am only familiar with Syd Barrett – era Pink Floyd and kinda drifted away after Ummagumma so I haven’t heard the original version and quite frankly I don’t need to after your stunning performance. We are so lucky to see you two transcend the boundaries of perfection every time.
Hi dear Girls?❤.. this don’t is a comment.. is a suggest..and a humble request??
What do you think about a
” MLT magic touch ” in a cover of Here comes the sun .??. I can’t wait hear this wonderful song played by Mona and Lisa.. please !
.
Wow…….you just keep raising the bar!!! Fantastic cover. Not sure what is more difficult(to cover a Beatles song or a Pink Floyd song??? Anyway, thanks again for the moon shot & landing of this song
Every song has its unique challenges so it’s impossible to answer that universally. Some songs are easier to translate to a “Duo Session” setting than others but when it comes to Pink Floyd there are definitely fewer that work as well with just 2 people. We like those limitations though – they make us think outside the box! 🙂
Also thank you ♥
Again, a great arrangement with vocals that make it your own. Sweet!!
Pure Magic! Beautiful. Great guitar licks by both of you. Great vocals. Loved it. I wish I was there!! Amazing.
Beautiful rendition of a classic song. Perfect harmonies as Always. Thank you ladies for sharing.
WOW!
I love Pink Floyd, I love this song, just follow the original arrangement to be a beautiful cover., but you do more, you amplify the beautiful… you don’t do better or same..you do something slightly different..but equally beautiful.. it’s ” the MLT magic touch ” As always I loved..??? ?❤
Such goosebumps… beautifully done ladies.
Holy ?…Good Morning…. I’m fully awake now!! Did that ever send Groovy Goosebumps going for me…. Whoa and then some… Wow…. Beautifully sung and Guitaring…. Stellar, am stoked and my Friday just became Fab, Thankyou for choosing to do this, you’ve captured the essence humdinger spot on. Luv the hat Mona ?☮️
Very good made. All you two touch becomes magic.
Outstanding job, Girls, and beautiful guitar work all around.
All I can say is wow. Sorry.
Outstanding!!! This is my favorite song from my second favorite Pink Floyd album (my fave is Animals), and you did an amazing job on this one! I love that you (Mona) played this on a 12 string. I adore the sound of a 12 string guitar, and while a little more difficult to play, the sound is worth it to me. Lisa, your soloing is spot on… and both of your vocals soar! I’ve been playing this song for more than 30 years, both in bands and as a solo (one of the few rare times I sing)… and I usually play it on my 12 string too.
Well Done – I LOVE IT!!!
Everyone is Familiar with Another Brick In The Wall, but Wish You Were Here is a often forgotten masterpiece that now has another place in Music History with the Eerily Beautiful Cover by The MonaLisa Twins.
Ladies you gave this song another demention into darkness and sadness. A profoundly sad song that embodies a deep sadness at the loss of someone. Whether a friend, parent, family member, spouse, or just an acquaintance. The hurt will ease, but the memories will last a lifetime.
Thanks Ladies for bringing back this oft forgotten song. ?❤
Beautiful
Another great classic cover done in your inimitable style. The playing, soloing and harmonies were impeccable. Your choice of music knows no bounds. Obviously I’m a MLT aficionado, and Australian!
I’m amazed at the variety of songs you are picking to cover. Each one shows how well you to play and sing showing how wide your talent is. Really enjoyed it. Mona, I see you are playing a Breedlove. I have one that is a different style. Are you enjoying the Breedlove? I really like mine but use it on certain types of songs. Also, it looks like while yours is a 12-string you only doubled the low E. I’ve never seen that before……..or it could just be my faulty eye-sight not seeing the other strings. Again….good as always!! Mike.
Hi Michael.
Freeze the video at 3:48, you can see the 12 strings next to the capo. But otherwise, yes hard to see.
Thanks!!!!! At a certain age the eye-sight is the second thing to go.
Hi Michael
Yes, I love the Breedlove! Darryl said, it’s fully stringed but it’s hard to see the thin strings when they’re all vibrating! It plays beautifully and much easier than my Maton 12-string, although I think I prefer the Maton a slight bit when it’s plugged in. I’m lucky to have both of them 🙂
This reminds me of the “Nashville Tuning” which is a 6 string with the high octave strings of a 12 string guitar for the G – D – A – E strings. Then the same part is recorded on the Nashville tuning and a regular guitar panned left and right. It gives a distinctive sound, like opening up a 12 string. Apparently Pink Floyd did this in “Hey You”.
Beautiful Mona and Lisa. You have such great taste in music. How come you keep picking my favourites? I know, You are really, deep down, teenagers of the sixties, just like I was, or in this case, young punks of the seventies! Another wonderful beginning to the weekend. Everything is now all good. Just wish I was there, while you were recording this. ?❤️
Brilliant cover of a great guitarsong. I saw Roger Waters perform The Wall in 2015. One of the best concert experiences i`ve had
Brilliant! You both sing and play the guitar with so much feeling, I’m just captivated and boiled over! You capture and express the emotion of this song so perfectly. Top notch performance, wow! Love that intricate guitar playing you both do so well, and singing beautifully. Guitar work is truly remarkable. You are magnificent, and never cease to impress with every new song you bring us. Absolutely love your music, thank you! Now I can’t go to sleep. 🙂
